🎥 “Just Play Dead” Trailer: Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Green Plot Against Each Other in Director Martin Campbell’s Twisty Neo-Noir Crime Thriller — In Select Theaters August 28th, and on VOD/Digital September 1st
There was a story Samuel L. Jackson once revealed years ago that in almost every movie he agrees to do, he first puts together the look of his character, starting with the wig and hairstyle, then perhaps the clothing next. Well, in his latest film, those choices definitely stand out because he’s made some pretty bold ones with this character.
In the new darkly comic, twisty crime thriller Just Play Dead, the Pulp Fiction star re-teams with director Martin Campbell, having previously worked with him on the assassin thriller The Protégé, and plays Jack Wolfe, a wealthy criminal mastermind plotting to fake his own death for a $30 million insurance payout.
The plan, if successful, will require the help of Jack’s estranged wife, Nora (played by Eva Green), who will get a cut of the money for her trouble. She’ll also have to draw an unsuspecting mark into their scheme and seduce him to help sell her husband’s fake death.
The problem is, Nora has a better idea: kill Jack for real, frame her lover (Jason Fernández) for the murder, and keep the fortune all for herself. Bingo, bango!
Also co-starring María Pedraza and Eoin Macken and written by Dan Gordon, the film feels like a throwback to the kind of shamelessly sleazy neo-noir thrillers where double-crosses, a little pulp, and a few outrageous wigs go a long way.
Just Play Dead is due to open in select theaters August 28th before arriving on VOD and digital September 1st.
🎥 “Animals” Teaser Trailer: A Kidnapping Plot Threatens Ben Affleck’s Political Campaign and Family in Netflix’s Thriller with Kerry Washington — In Select Theaters and on Netflix October 9th
Anyone who follows a political campaign closely knows politics is personal. And does it get any more personal than having your child kidnapped and held for ransom?
Ben Affleck directs and stars in this new Netflix political thriller, Animals, playing Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate in a hotly contested race whose carefully managed campaign is thrown into crisis when his son suddenly goes missing and is later revealed to have been kidnapped for ransom. With Kerry Washington playing his wife, Abigail, the couple are forced into a desperate race to assemble the ransom while trying to figure out who is behind the kidnapping.
Meanwhile, Mark’s trusted political adviser (Steven Yeun) is scrambling behind the scenes to keep the campaign from unraveling as the kidnapping plot threatens to turn a private crisis into a very public media disaster. They say there’s no such thing as bad press, but this is one story the campaign wouldn’t be able to spin its way out of once word gets out.
Taking place over one harrowing night, Gillian Anderson joins the fray as a very discreet consultant whose expertise in dealing with such crises makes her exactly the kind of person Mark and Abigail need, especially when some decisions require acting quickly, quietly, and with extreme discretion.
Co-starring Adriana Paz, Luis Gerardo Méndez, and Ray Fisher, the film marks Affleck’s latest project for Netflix and his production company, Artists Equity, following their previous collaboration, The Rip, the gritty cop thriller that became a huge hit for the streamer back in January.
Animals is scheduled to open in select theaters and also stream on Netflix October 9th.
🎥 “Rolling Loud: The Movie” Trailer: Owen Wilson Loses His Son in the Middle of the Massive Hip-Hop Festival in Jeremy Garelick’s New Comedy — In Theaters October 2nd
We’re living in a strange world when movies are being made as commercials for productions and brands. But we never would have imagined that live concert events themselves would be turned into feature films too.
Rolling Loud is mostly known as a massive hip-hop music festival where some of the biggest rap artists and thousands of fans come together for one very loud weekend. Now, apparently, it’s also the setting for a new comedy starring Owen Wilson. Go figure!
Written and directed by Jeremy Garelick (The Wedding Ringer, Murder Mystery 2), Wilson stars as a cautious father who sneaks his 13-year-old son into Rolling Loud in hopes of reconnecting with him. As his attempts to be the “cool dad” quickly backfire, things go from bad to worse when he loses his son somewhere in the massive festival crowd.
He’s soon forced to navigate mosh pits, restricted backstage areas, and a parade of eccentric strangers (played by Matt Rife, Christine Ko, Henry Winkler, Sexyy Red, and Ty Dolla $ign) as he desperately tries to track the kid down before the night is over. Sometimes your job as a parent is simply making sure your kid gets home in one piece... even if it means diving headfirst into the world’s loudest concert to find him.
Rolling Loud is coming to theaters October 2nd.

Sometimes you have to play hardball. And when you’re dealing with people who don’t play by the rules, sometimes you have to play by theirs. In this new historical crime drama based on true events, Mark Wahlberg, with some noticeable prosthetic makeup, plays notorious mafia hitman Greg Scarpa, who is recruited to work alongside a young Black FBI agent (played by Emmy-nominated Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) investigating the murders of civil-rights leaders in 1960s Mississippi. It’s a pairing no one saw coming, as the FBI turns to a man whose methods are anything but by the book. Directed by The Inspection filmmaker Elegance Bratton, the film dramatizes a particularly dark chapter in America’s history, when civil-rights leaders were being targeted and killed for their activism. And the only way to seek justice meant operating outside the law. You know what they say: you can’t fight fire with fire... but you can sure as hell fight dirty.
🎥 “Beware Boiúna” Trailer: A Colossal Snake Hunts Kiana Madeira, Jessica Rothe, and Logan Marshall-Green Through the Amazon in Mike P. Nelson’s Jungle Horror — In Theaters October 2nd
Show of hands: who here loves giant snake thrillers? To be fair, there aren’t exactly a ton of them, with maybe the classic ’90s cheesefest Anaconda ranking as one of the genre’s most memorable standouts. But we say it’s about time the giant-snake thriller slithered back into the conversation. Well, here’s one that just might have enough bite to satisfy our craving. Starring Kiana Madeira, Jessica Rothe, and Logan Marshall-Green, this new jungle horror follows a group of medical workers on a mission deep into the Amazon. Things take a deadly turn when they awaken Boiúna, a colossal ancient predator that quickly reminds them who really rules the jungle. Directed by genre helmer Mike P. Nelson (The Domestics, V/H/S/85), the film reminds us that giant snakes aren’t only terrifying; they also make one hell of a movie monster. Throw in a few questionable Cajun accents, and you’ve got yourself one gloriously pulpy creature feature.

Revenge is a dish best served cold... and served with help from some middle-school kids. When he learns that his ex-girlfriend Abigail (Gillian Jacobs) is seeing the school’s obnoxiously sunny principal, Brady (Rob Lowe)—who also happens to be his number-one rival—Doug sets out to use the school musical as the ultimate act of revenge. Using his class of rug rats as his little evil helpers, Doug secretly stages the most inappropriate school play imaginable in hopes of bringing Brady down. Written by Alexander Heller and directed by actress Giselle Bonilla, this darkly comic teacher-revenge caper turns petty jealousy into a full-blown midlife meltdown in which the children become unwitting accomplices to one man’s increasingly unhinged payback scheme.

Before he was the man behind The Mandalorian, The Jungle Book, and Iron Man, Jon Favreau made his feature directing debut on a much smaller scale. He also brought his best pal Vince Vaughn along for the ride, five years after the pair broke through with Swingers, the ’90s indie hangout comedy Favreau wrote that helped launch both of their careers. Favreau followed Swingers with his 2001 directorial debut, reuniting with Vaughn for another story about two friends whose personalities have a way of getting them into trouble. Twenty-five years later, that debut is getting the 4K UHD SteelBook treatment, bringing the boys back for another go-round. In this offbeat crime caper, Favreau and Vaughn play Bobby and Ricky, a pair of longtime friends and low-level criminals whose trip to New York for a seemingly simple money-laundering job quickly becomes anything but. Working for local crime boss Max (Peter Falk), Bobby knows the assignment calls for discretion, while Ricky seems determined to act like he’s starring in his own gangster movie, turning a simple job into a comedy of bruised egos and bad decisions. Perhaps it’s time to get Made all over again.

If we’ve learned anything from horror movies, mysterious idols are usually best left exactly where you found them.
