📺 “Man on Fire” Trailer: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Ignites as a Haunted Bodyguard in Netflix’s Gritty Crime Thriller Series — Premieres Thurs, April 30th on Netflix
Fresh from starring in the well-received MCU miniseries Wonder Man, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II heads back to the small screen later this month in another explosive series, trading superpowers for a gritty story about how some heroes are forged in fire.
Based on A. J. Quinnell’s best-selling 1980 crime novel (previously adapted into a 1987 film starring Scott Glenn and, more famously, Tony Scott’s hyper-kinetic 2004 thriller with Denzel Washington), Man on Fire reimagines the story of former Special Forces operative turned bodyguard mercenary John Creasy, with Abdul-Mateen stepping into the role for a new pulse-pounding take.
In this Netflix version, Creasy is a man shaped by violence and weighed down by severe PTSD, searching for some form of redemption. As he tries to step away from that life, he’s hired to protect a wealthy family in Rio de Janeiro. But when the rebellious teenage girl (Billie Boullet, from the Anne Frank miniseries A Small Light) under his watch becomes entangled in a dangerous situation, he’s pulled right back into the chaos he’s been trying to outrun. Now, with a horde of mercenaries closing in, Creasy steps up to become her last line of defense. And he’s a man not only of his word, but of action.
Joining Abdul-Mateen is Alice Braga as Valeria Melo, a street-smart driver with underworld connections, while Scoot McNairy appears as CIA agent Henry Tappan, a calculated presence operating behind the scenes. Bobby Cannavale rounds out the cast as Paul Rayburn, Creasy’s loyal ally who is a former Special Forces soldier whose charm masks a deeper familiarity with violence.
The series is developed by Kyle Killen (creator of NBC’s Awake and co-showrunner of Paramount’s Halo), with filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) directing the first two episodes, setting the tone for a grounded, character-driven thriller that leans into the tension and emotional fallout of a man trying to outrun his past, only to find the fire follows wherever he goes.
Man on Fire is slated to premiere Thursday, April 30th on Netflix.
📺 “The Boroughs” Teaser Trailer: Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare & Bill Pullman Face a Monstrous Threat in Duffer Brothers-Produced Supernatural Horror Series — Premieres Thurs, May 21st on Netflix
In Ron Howard’s classic 1985 sci-fi film Cocoon, a group of elderly residents crosses paths with visiting aliens—a strange encounter that reminds us it’s never too late for a little adventure, and you’re never too old to experience something extraordinary.
Well, the Duffer Brothers, the minds behind the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, have developed a new show that takes that Cocoon concept and twists it into something far less life-affirming and far more life-threatening. Welcome to The Boroughs, a seemingly average retirement community where residents begin to experience something out of the ordinary... like alien-like monsters lurking at night.
Featuring an all-star cast led by Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare, and Bill Pullman, The Boroughs flips that sense of wonder into pure dread. Set in a sun-soaked New Mexico retirement community, the story follows Sam Cooper (Molina), a grieving, grumpy newcomer forced to move into a new home alone after the death of his beloved wife.
Still grappling with that loss, Sam begins to suspect something is deeply wrong with his new surroundings. Sure, the neighbors are friendly, but the people running the place don’t feel quite right. Worse yet, at night, something begins to stir. What others dismiss as elderly confusion soon reveals a darker truth: something otherworldly is preying on the residents… and leaving might not be an option.
Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, and Seth Numrich round out the cast, with Dee Wallace and Ed Begley Jr. appearing in guest roles.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), with acclaimed TV helmer Ben Taylor (Sex Education, Catastrophe) directing the first two episodes, the series aims to blend supernatural horror with late-in-life frustration and creeping paranoia. And knowing it’s produced by the creators of Stranger Things, it’s likely to lean into that same mix of eerie mystery and character-driven tension they’re known for.
The Boroughs premieres Thursday, May 21st on Netflix.
📺 “The Terror: Devil in Silver” Trailer: Dan Stevens Is Trapped in a Nightmarish Psychiatric Hospital in Ridley Scott-Produced Supernatural Horror Series — Premieres Thurs, May 7th on AMC+ and Shudder
There’s something especially unsettling about stories set inside institutions; the kind where the walls are meant to protect, but instead start to feel like a trap. That’s the space this latest chapter of The Terror leans into, trading historical trauma for something far more claustrophobic and psychological.
The Terror: Devil in Silver marks the third installment of the Ridley Scott–produced horror anthology series, following 2018’s The Terror, set on a doomed 1820s Arctic expedition, and 2019’s The Terror: Infamy, which unfolded inside a WWII-era Japanese internment camp. Each season shares a defining thread: an unseen evil lurking within the confines of its setting. In this case, it’s a mental hospital, where curing the patients may be the least of anyone’s concerns.
Dan Stevens stars as Pepper, a working-class guy who, thanks to a streak of bad luck and a short fuse, finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital. What should be a temporary nightmare quickly turns into something far worse, as Pepper realizes that surviving the patients is only part of the problem.
Things soon spiral beyond his control. The staff aren’t exactly trustworthy, the system feels stacked against him, and whispers of something darker begin to take shape in the shadows. Whether it’s paranoia or something real, Pepper starts to believe there’s an entity feeding off the suffering inside the hospital... and getting out may mean confronting it head-on.
Joining Stevens is a stacked ensemble that includes Judith Light, CCH Pounder, Aasif Mandvi, John Benjamin Hickey, Stephen Root, and Marin Ireland, each adding to a world where every face feels like it’s hiding something... and more often than not, they are.
Originally developed by David Kajganich, this new season, however, is spearheaded by TV writer-producer Chris Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire) alongside author Victor LaValle, adapting his novel into what looks like a slow-burn descent into madness.
Acclaimed filmmaker Karyn Kusama, of The Invitation and Jennifer’s Body fame, directs the first two episodes, setting the tone for a season that turns a hospital into a reflection of just how fragile reality can be. With Ridley Scott continuing on board as an executive producer, the series carries that familiar sense of uneasy dread that has defined The Terror from the start. It’s the kind of horror that aims to get under your skin and refuses to let go.
The Terror: Devil in Silver premieres Thursday, May 7th on AMC+ and Shudder.
