š„ āNever After Darkā Trailer: A Routine Exorcism Takes a Dark Turn in Dave Boyleās Japanese Horror Thriller Starring Shogunās Moeka Hoshi ā Arriving In U.S. Theaters September 25th
What makes J-horror so effective is the way it often treats the spirit world as something woven into everyday life. Perhaps itās because Japanese culture approaches death differently, whereas much of the Western world tends to treat death as finite. In Japan... or at least in its horror films, death is often something that still feels very much present. A spiritual world is only a thin veil away, existing alongside the living rather than somewhere beyond them.
Thatās the core idea behind Never After Dark, a new Japanese supernatural horror that assumes the line between the living and the dead is thinner than we think. Itās also a reason why the film feels like it might immediately be under our skin.
Written and directed by American filmmaker Dave Boyle, who previously served as showrunner and lead director of Netflixās House of Ninjas, the film stars Japanese actress Moeka Hoshi (especially memorable in the Emmy-winning miniseries Shogun) as Airi, a wandering medium who helps restless spirits cross out of the living world. Her latest job takes her to an isolated country house, where what seems like a routine exorcism becomes far more dangerous after she encounters an apparition unlike anything sheās faced before.
Co-starring Kurumi Inagaki as Airiās dead sister Miku, who remains by her side in spirit, along with Kento Kaku, Tae Kimura, and Mutsuo Yoshioka, the film earned strong reviews when it screened earlier this year at SXSW, where it took home the Audience Award in the Midnighter section.
Never After Dark is coming to U.S. theaters September 25th. Come for the ghosts, but donāt underestimate how intense things can get when the dead refuse to leave after dark.
š„ āCrawlersā Trailer: Matilda Lutz Has Nowhere to Run From a Swarm of Venomous Spiders in This Horror Flick ā Hitting Theaters October 16th
They say the average person accidentally swallows eight spiders a year in their sleep. Itās an urban legend, of course, but one designed to prey on peopleās very real fear of spiders. And if history is any indication, spiders have long ranked among our most common phobias.
And we get it. Just look at those long legs, stretching out slowly as they creep across the floor and ceiling. Yikes! That image alone is enough to have us pulling a stocking over our heads before going night-night. But even though the vast majority of spiders are harmless to humans, that doesnāt make them any less scary... as this new horror thriller is likely to prove.
Directed by Spanish horror filmmaker Ćngel Gómez HernĆ”ndez, Crawlers stars Italian actress Matilda Lutz (Red Sonja, Revenge) as Serena, an apartment building manager who soon finds herself forced to keep her residents alive when a venomous spider infestation sends the complex into lockdown.
From the very first creepy imagery in the trailer, the director seems to know exactly how to make viewers uncomfortable with the thought that sleep offers little protection from whatever might be crawling nearby. And anyone with a serious case of arachnophobia might just want to sit this one out, as from the looks of things, the film will likely make even the most hardened spider supporter squirm in their seat.
Crawlers is set to open in U.S. theaters October 16th. And just remember: if the spiders donāt get you, the fear of them just might.

š„ āVampireās Kiss: 4K Restorationā Trailer: Nicolas Cage Goes Full Cage in This Bizarre ā80s New York Vampire Cult Classic ā Out Now on UHD and Blu-ray in the U.K. via Radiance
It features one of Nicolas Cageās most memorable performances, as a fast-talking Manhattan literary agent convinced heās slowly turning into a vampire.
