Here’s a hot take: Sebastian Stan just might have the best post-MCU career of anyone from the Avengers team. He’s proven himself more than willing to take on difficult, sometimes deeply unflattering roles: see his Oscar-nominated performance as Donald Trump in The Apprentice or his Emmy-nominated turn as Tommy Lee in Pam & Tommy. Stan seems perfectly happy pushing himself far outside the superhero world, and with all the buzz surrounding his latest film, that fearlessness might just put him back in the Oscar conversation later this year.
In the upcoming thought-provoking drama Fjord, the Romanian-born American actor gets the opportunity to play a Romanian family man forced to face a terrible accusation involving the safety of his children.
Stan plays Mihai, who is happily married to his Norwegian wife, Lisbet (Oscar nominee Renate Reinsve, of Sentimental Value). But when one of their children arrives at school with bruises, the family suddenly finds itself under suspicion of abuse. And due to Norway’s strict child-protection rules, the children are taken away from their parents while authorities investigate the allegations.
Mihai must now defend himself, his religious beliefs, and his right to keep his family together against a system that has already begun questioning everything he stands for.
Written and directed by acclaimed Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, who previously won the Palme d’Or for his 2007 abortion drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, the film marked the director’s return to Cannes, where he once again took home the festival’s top prize.
Fjord will likely spark plenty of conversations when it arrives in U.S. theaters on October 9th.
🎥 “UNABOMBER” Trailer: Jacob Tremblay Plays a Young Ted Kaczynski in Netflix’s True-Crime Drama with Russell Crowe and Shailene Woodley — Debuting September 25th on Netflix
Picture the infamous Unabomber in your mind, and you’ll likely conjure an image of him in a hood, with a thick beard and dark glasses. But have you ever thought about what he was like as a young man, just trying to fit into a world that seemed increasingly difficult for him to understand?
This new Netflix drama-thriller casts Jacob Tremblay (The Life of Chuck, Room) as the young Ted Kaczynski, tracing his journey from disaffected Harvard prodigy to one of America’s most notorious domestic terrorists. And if you want to understand how someone can become so disconnected from society, you first have to take into account how they got there in the first place.
Danish filmmaker Janus Metz, known for the tennis biopic Borg vs McEnroe, as well as directing episodes of Andor and True Detective, takes on the notorious true-crime story, splitting the film between Kaczynski’s troubled youth and the FBI investigation decades later.
Oscar winner Russell Crowe co-stars as Professor Henry Murray, the Harvard psychologist who subjects Kaczynski to a series of controversial psychological experiments while he’s a student; perhaps at a time when he’s already forming his deep distrust of authority figures.
Meanwhile, Shailene Woodley plays FBI agent Joanne Miller, who leads the investigation decades later as agents begin closing in on Kaczynski, now living off-grid in a remote Montana cabin.
Also co-starring Annabelle Wallis, Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg, and Marc Menchaca, UNABOMBER seems less interested in simply turning Kaczynski into a monster than in examining how a brilliant, deeply alienated young man became one. The film debuts on Netflix September 25th.
🎥 “A Talent for Murder” Trailer: Helen Mirren Gets Deliciously Mean as Author Patricia Highsmith in Anton Corbijn’s Twisty Murder-Within-a-Murder Thriller with Alden Ehrenreich and Olivia Cooke — Coming to Theaters October 23rd
At a spry 81, you’d think there’s not much Helen Mirren could do at this point that would surprise us. But darn it, she keeps on surprising us with her bold, unexpected choices. Here, Mirren cranks up the crotchety and leans into her deliciously mean side as Patricia Highsmith, the famed author behind such twisted murder thrillers as The Talented Mr. Ripley and Strangers on a Train.
Based on the play Switzerland by Joanna Murray-Smith, A Talent for Murder tells the fictional story of an encounter between Highsmith and a young literary agent sent to convince her to write one final Tom Ripley novel. Over the course of one contentious night, they formulate a dastardly little murder tale that starts to feel almost too real, as Highsmith demands that her young visitor not only write about murder, but get inside the mind of a murderer.
Alden Ehrenreich, of Weapons and Solo: A Star Wars Story, stars opposite Mirren as the young agent manipulated into concocting a twisty murder yarn that begins to stretch the imagination. House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke plays the woman at the center of their fictional plot, a potential victim in their twisted Ripley tale. As the story takes shape, she becomes not only a figment of his imagination, but also a presence that begins to feel disturbingly real.
Famed Dutch photographer, music-video director, and filmmaker Anton Corbijn directs this twisty murder-within-a-murder thriller. It marks his first feature film since directing the 2015 James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock bio-drama Life. Corbijn is also known for directing the Joy Division biopic Control, as well as the acclaimed espionage thrillers A Most Wanted Man and The American.
A Talent for Murder is slated to open in theaters on October 23rd.

Queen at Sea is a new gut-wrenching family drama that explores some of the hard truths of growing older and what to do when a loved one can no longer care for themselves. Yup. Break out those tissues because this looks like one hell of an emotional gut-punch, especially for anyone who is currently dealing with an elderly loved one.
Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche delivers what certainly appears to be a heartbreaking performance as a daughter struggling to decide what is best for her mother as dementia begins taking away her ability to make critical decisions for herself. Those decisions become exponentially more complicated when she begins to clash with her stepfather over what is truly best for her mother.
Veteran British actor Tom Courtenay (45 Years) seemingly delivers an equally heart-wrenching performance as an elderly husband struggling to protect his seriously ailing wife (Anna Calder-Marshall), while facing the very real possibility that she may need a level of care he can no longer provide.
Written and directed by Lance Hammer, who made the 2008 Sundance-winning drama Ballast, this drama gets to the heart of what families fear about aging: the very thought of losing control of your faculties to the point where loved ones must step in and make the hardest decisions on your behalf.
Queen at Sea earned rave reviews on the festival circuit earlier this year and will soon be making its way to U.S. theaters on October 30th.

Comedian Rob Riggle has made us laugh for years, whether in countless sketches on The Daily Show or through laugh-out-loud appearances in comedies like Step Brothers, 22 Jump Street, and The Hangover. But Riggle changes his tune a bit here, taking on a more dramatic role in the emotionally driven supernatural family drama Nickels.
The funny man plays a devoted family man who has spent most of his life grieving the tragic death of his older brother, who was killed in a terrible motorcycle accident 30 years ago. As someone who tends to detect certain signs and symbolic indicators— like random nickels, for instance, Riggle’s character can’t help but see that his next-door neighbor’s son seems to share a strange spiritual connection with his late brother following a similar motorcycle accident that leaves the teen badly injured. Now, he must grapple with the possibility that his late brother may somehow have returned through this boy, causing an emotional and spiritual crisis within his own family.
Also starring Superman & Lois actress Bitsie Tulloch as Riggle’s wife and Marty Supreme breakout Odessa A’zion as their teenage daughter, along with Cocaine Bear’s Aaron Holliday as the injured teen next door, the film is directed by Spencer King (The Wilderness) and written by Tim Tuchrello.
Vinessa Shaw, Tom Arnold, and Rebecca Gayheart, who plays a spiritual medium, round out the cast of this heartfelt drama about unresolved grief and how some signs can’t be ignored.

Lured by fame and celebrity, Dr. Kapoor narrates his stranger-than-fiction life story of a doctor swept into a tabloid circus that would ultimately put his career, reputation, and freedom on the line as he faces a high-profile drug-conspiracy trial.
Also starring Abbie Cornish as Anna Nicole Smith and David Julian Hirsh as her personal lawyer, Howard K. Stern, along with Linda Hamilton as defense attorney Ellyn Garofalo, the film travels back to a time when celebrity trials were becoming wall-to-wall tabloid coverage, and the court of public opinion could carry just as much weight as the one inside the courtroom.

When people think of ’70s and ’80s Chinese martial-arts films, they often forget there was another popular subgenre running alongside them: supernatural martial-arts horror. These films helped inspire countless genre mashups, blending martial-arts action with ghosts, romance, comedy, and supernatural horror. One of the most prominent to come out of the ’80s was this supernatural fantasy classic from legendary Hong Kong filmmaker and action choreographer Ching Siu-Tung, known for The Swordsman trilogy and Duel to the Death. In this genre-bending 1987 epic, Hong Kong icon Leslie Cheung plays a timid tax collector who falls for a beautiful ghost and is drawn into a supernatural battle of demons, swordplay, and a romance that crosses the line between life and death. Newly restored in 4K, Arrow Video is set to release the film as part of its upcoming 4K Blu-ray trilogy collection.

Indian cinema is known for its grand spectacle and elaborate action sequences, and this looks to be no exception. This hyperkinetic spy thriller seems to be packed with enough high-octane energy to keep audiences glued to the screen. Starring Alia Bhatt (RRR) and Sharvari (Munjya) as two highly trained operatives, the film throws them into a world of covert missions where loyalty is constantly tested and it’s never entirely clear who can be trusted. Directed by Shiv Rawail and co-starring Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol, the film marks a female-led entry in the YRF Spy Universe. So expect plenty of slow-motion action scenes, only to be ramped up with camera movements so fast they practically whip you through the action.

With Gibson currently working on the long-awaited two-part sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ, this new re-release will include a first look at Part One, which is set to open in 2027.
