TV Trailers of the Week: Beavis and Butt-Head: S3, Hostage, Dope Girls, Rivers of Fate and More
Take a peek at some of the latest trailers for upcoming TV shows.
✪ “Beavis and Butt-Head: Season 3” Trailer: Mike Judge’s Infamous Dopey Duo Embrace Multiverse Madness, Metallica Cameos, and Flaming Helicopters — Premiering September 3rd on Comedy Central
When Mike Judge's groundbreaking MTV cartoon series Beavis and Butt-Head first hit the scene, it felt like these lovable doofuses were perfectly tapping into the slacker culture of the '90s—shamelessly obtuse and proudly indifferent. Fast forward to today, and Beavis and Butt-Head are more relevant than ever—now enmeshed in the trolling culture of the social media age, where their brand of idiocy feels oddly prophetic.
With Judge's other beloved toon series King of the Hill making its glorious return in August on Hulu, fans of Beavis and Butt-Head can mark their calendars for early September for the arrival of Season 3 of its revival series.
The series lives just above a certain level of reality, as Beavis and Butt-Head are able to bend the laws of time and space—becoming bald alien beings one moment and old men the next. Jokes abound as legendary metal band Metallica shows up in an episode, professing their love for Beavis and Butt-Head before being knocked out cold by a thrown gold brick. It’s payment for “selling out” to Beavis, as the duo are now rich and traveling in a flames-painted helicopter.
But being dumb means one could have multiple personalities and realities, as we see these two numbskulls old, tattooed, and severely overweight—while also snapping back to their normal selves, just as clueless and giggly as ever.
Fans can catch Beavis and Butt-Head: Season 3 premiering Wednesday, September 3rd on Comedy Central—a network that’s been making headlines lately thanks to its other irreverent animated comedy series, South Park. Whoa, it’s like the ’90s all over again, with both shows back in the public discourse, making hilarious waves and enemies at same time.
✪ “Hostage” Trailer: Suranne Jones and Julie Delpy Navigate Crisis and Conspiracy in Matt Charman’s High-Stakes Political Thriller Series — Premieres August 21st on Netflix
From Bridge of Spies screenwriter Matt Charman comes Hostage, a gripping new British political thriller that asks: when the world is watching, how far would you go to save the ones you love?
In this new Netflix original series, Gentleman Jack actress Suranne Jones stars as Prime Minister Rachel Anthony, whose world unravels when her husband is kidnapped during a critical state visit. Torn between leading a nation and saving her family, she’s forced into a high-risk game of power, secrets, and sacrifice.
As tensions mount, French President Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy, of Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy) is pulled into the same deadly political game, where one wrong move could spark international catastrophe. The stakes are global, but the cost is all personal.
Also starring Corey Mylchreest, Lucian Msamati, Ashley Thomas, James Cosmo, Martin McCann, and Jehnny Beth, Hostage premieres Thursday, August 21st on Netflix.
✪ “Dope Girls” Trailer: Julianne Nicholson Rises as a Nightclub Queenpin in Post-WWI London Crime Saga with Eliza Scanlen — Streaming July 29th on Hulu
Julianne Nicholson delivered a raw, heartbreaking performance as a mother weighed down by grief in the HBO miniseries Mare of Easttown, earning her first Emmy win. She was also recently nominated for her role as the cold and calculating ringleader in the twisty government conspiracy thriller Paradise. So, it’s safe to say that when Julianne Nicholson shows up on screen, you should pay attention—because at this point, she’s earned the viewers’ trust and that whatever she’s about to do will be quietly powerful, emotionally complex, and absolutely worth watching.
In the upcoming miniseries Dope Girls, Nicholson takes the lead, playing an unsuspecting businesswoman trying to survive in post-WWI London, where the most dangerous power players in the underworld aren’t always the ones holding the guns—they’re the ones pouring the drinks and keeping people entertained.
Set in Soho’s emerging underground club scene—where the drinks flow freely and the ladies run the show—Nicholson takes on the role of Kate Galloway, a former working-class wife who has now risen to power as a nightclub queenpin of London’s criminal underground, circa 1918.
The six-episode series revolves around the birth of the British organized drug empire through the lens of female ambition, forbidden vice, and survival in a city reeling from war.
As Kate Galloway’s nightclub flourishes—built on drugs, sex, and secrets—an undercover female police officer (played by Australian actress Eliza Scanlen, from Old and Sharp Objects) plots her downfall, setting the stage for a cat-and-mouse game with stakes as high as the club’s hemlines.
With a stellar cast including Umi Myers, Eilidh Fisher, Sebastian Croft, Rory Fleck Byrne, Nabhaan Rizwan, Dustin Demri-Burns, and Geraldine James, Dope Girls is executive produced by Polly Stenham, Alex Warren, and the Bad Wolf team behind His Dark Materials.
Think Peaky Blinders with flappers, femme fatales, and a whole lot of opium. All episodes are set to stream this Tuesday, July 29th on Hulu.
