You know, there was a time when Hollywood had to come up with a clever twist on a well-known property, especially when the thing they were trying to adapt didn’t necessarily have enough material or story to sustain a feature film. Well, those days are over. Now anything can become a movie, no matter how thin the premise, how limited the source material, or how little anyone ever asked to see it stretched across two hours. Oh, you don’t believe us? Well, feast your eyes on Matchbox (wait for it...) The Movie.
Yes, those old-ass Matchbox cars (the classic die-cast toy line now owned by Mattel) have somehow become the source material for a new John Cena action movie. At this point, we’re still not entirely sure why. It’s not like people were dying for a Matchbox movie, and if there is some massive fanbase built around those tiny die-cast cars, they’ve managed to keep remarkably quiet about it.
Anyhoo, John Cena stars in this action-packed spy thriller as an undercover CIA agent who reunites with his childhood friends for what should be a nostalgic night out, only for the entire group to be taken hostage by a team of heavily armed mercenaries.
You see, Cena plays Sean, a former toy-loving nerd who spent his childhood playing with Matchbox cars alongside his neighborhood friends. Little did they know Sean would eventually grow up to become an international spy known for crashing cars and pulling off death-defying stunts as if he were still playing with toys in the backyard. Hence the Matchbox tie-in. See? It all makes sense now.
Despite its kooky IP connection, the cast is surprisingly top-notch, with Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, and Arturo Castro playing Cena’s childhood friends, who are shocked not only to learn what he does for a living but also to find themselves caught up in one of his dangerous missions.
Danai Gurira is also in the mix as a CIA director, while Corey Stoll takes on the role of the main villain, with Bill Camp and Golshifteh Farahani rounding out the cast.
Sam Hargrave, a former stunt coordinator who worked on films like Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde, and Captain America: Civil War, continues his successful transition into a full-fledged action director with this new John Cena movie, following the hit Netflix films Extraction and Extraction 2.
So even with the understandable skepticism that comes with turning a silly toy brand into an action movie, Hargrave’s involvement suggests we can at the very least count on some roaring engines, bone-rattling stunts, massive explosions, and tightly choreographed action sequences.
Matchbox: The Movie debuts October 9th on Apple TV.
🎥 “Resident Evil” Full Trailer: Austin Abrams Takes One Last Delivery Into an Infected Dead Zone in Zach Cregger’s Survival-Horror Reboot — In Theaters September 18th
After delivering two of the most acclaimed horror hits in recent memory with Barbarian and Weapons, writer-director Zach Cregger likely had his pick of what to tackle next. So, naturally, he chose something that seems completely out of character, yet at the same time somehow feels perfectly Cregger.
The Resident Evil franchise is apparently something Cregger has held close for years, having been a devoted fan of the video games since his younger days. And while the movie franchise based on the games has been far less consistent, Cregger seems determined to bring it closer to the survival-horror roots that made the original Resident Evil game such an enduring favorite.
For this complete franchise reboot, Cregger has once again teamed up with Weapons actor Austin Abrams as the main protagonist and, essentially, the audience’s guide into the filmmaker’s version of this infected, decaying world.
Abrams plays Bryan, a medical courier whose job is to transport and deliver emergency donated organs to hospitals across the city. When asked to make another run before ending his night shift, Bryan agrees to drive one last emergency organ across town.
The problem? His destination sits just outside the quarantine zone. But hey, the job pays double.
It turns out to be the worst decision Bryan has ever made, as he soon finds himself attacked and stranded in a deserted town crawling with infected dead who want nothing more than to tear him apart from bloody limb to bloody limb. What begins as one routine delivery becomes a relentless race through collapsing streets, hostile spaces, and an outbreak offering no obvious route home. No one said earning double pay would come cheap.
Written by Cregger and Shay Hatten, the film tells a standalone story rather than continuing the previous screen continuity. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser join Abrams in the cast.
Cregger, a comedian by trade, has already shown a real gift for dropping ordinary people into extremely hostile situations where macabre humor and sudden violence are never far apart. With this franchise installment, he seems to be tapping into the core of what made Resident Evil so potent in the first place: claustrophobic terror, limited resources, and the creeping realization that whatever is waiting behind the next locked door might be even worse than what’s chasing you.
Resident Evil is set to open in theaters September 18th. Come for the scares, but stay because every exit door happens to be blocked by something hungry. Yikes!
🎥 “Ebenezer” Comic-Con Trailer: Johnny Depp Transforms Into Scrooge in Ti West’s Darkly Supernatural Christmas Carol Retelling — Arriving in Theaters November 13th
So, it’s the height of summer, and it’s Comic-Con weekend. Naturally, that means Christmas movies and Johnny Depp, right?
Okay, maybe those aren’t the first things that come to mind, but Depp made a surprise appearance in full costume at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, wandering the Gaslamp Quarter and greeting bewildered fans as Ebenezer Scrooge before introducing the film’s first official trailer in Hall H. Apparently, not even July is safe from a well-timed “Bah, humbug.”
Directed by horror maestro Ti West, best known for X, Pearl, and MaXXXine, this new rendition of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol appears to lean into a darker, more overtly supernatural interpretation of the miser’s Christmas Eve haunting.
Here, Depp takes on the titular role of Ebenezer Scrooge in his first major studio film since his controversial and highly publicized defamation trial. Judging by the footage, Depp seems to relish disappearing beneath the elaborate makeup and fully embracing Scrooge’s theatrical mannerisms as the ultimate cranky old curmudgeon.
In the film, Scrooge’s life of isolation, cruelty, and emotional retreat is interrupted by the arrival of his long-dead former business partner, Jacob Marley. Legendary actor Ian McKellen takes up the chains as Marley, while Andrea Riseborough and Tramell Tillman appear as the Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present, guiding Scrooge through the memories, regrets, and consequences he has spent a lifetime avoiding.
Rupert Grint plays the long-suffering Bob Cratchit, with Daisy Ridley as Emily Cratchit and Sam Claflin as Scrooge’s nephew Fred.
Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Charlie Murphy, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes round out the cast.
West, who is again best known for low-budget yet critically acclaimed horror films, feels like an intriguing choice, especially since this may be the biggest production of his career. Still, anyone who saw his standout flashback episode of this year’s sleeper-hit series Widow’s Bay can attest that the filmmaker knows how to weave elements of Gothic horror with dark humor in the most unexpected ways. Color us intrigued.
Sure, Christmas may still be several months away, but Scrooge has already arrived to spoil the summer. Ebenezer is slated to open in theaters November 13th.
