đ„ âKrakenâ Trailer: A Sea Monster Strikes Back After Ecological Tampering in Norwayâs New Deep-Water Horror From âThe Tunnelâ Director PĂ„l Ăie â Coming to Theaters in 2026
Approximately 70 percent of Earthâs surface is covered by water, with much of the ocean still yet to be explored. Because of this, one could assume there are sea creatures that are yet to be discovered, thus centuries of man-made folk tales and myths of sea giants. Now, it might seem a little far-fetched to believe in such legends, but it doesnât stop us from wondering whatâs living underneath those dark, unexplored waters.
Well, Norway is no stranger to tales of ancient sea monsters stirring in its fjords. But what if folk fantasy wasnât so far from the truth, and the arrogance of man-driven ecological intrusion awakened something long thought to be myth? In other words, if you f*ck around with the ocean, youâll soon find out that the ocean f*cks around right back.
From PĂ„l Ăie, the filmmaker behind the hit Scandinavian disaster drama The Tunnel (aka Tunnelen), Kraken is the next deep-sea nightmare thriller from Norway, set in a small coastal community where something monstrous has begun to rise from deep beneath the surface. Something big... really big.
Starring Sara Khorami, Mikkel Bratt Silset, Jenny Evensen, and Silje Breivik, the film follows a marine biologist (Khorami) working at a remote fish farm when a series of inexplicable disturbances begins to unfold. Equipment malfunctions without cause. The currents shift in unnatural patterns. And when two teenagers are discovered brutally dead near the waterâs edge, every sign points toward the cold, forbidding center of the fjord â a place locals refuse to go, shrouded in old stories they donât dare repeat aloud.
Soon she comes to learn that a misguided âsuperior salmonâ sonic-treatment program, meant to acclimate new fish to foreign waters, has instead destabilized the fjordâs delicate ecosystem. As a result, it has awakened something ancient, enormous, and furious. Now the marine biologist and her team must face a creature long dismissed as folklore, a beast the community has feared for generations. Because in these waters, the ocean doesnât just hold secrets... it takes revenge â one tentacle lash at a time.
Kraken is expected to surface in U.S. theaters sometime in 2026. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, someoneâs gone and released the Kraken!
đ„ âThe Strangers: Chapter 3â Teaser: Madelaine Petsch Faces the Final Showdown in Renny Harlinâs Brutal Conclusion to the Reimagined Horror Trilogy with Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath & Richard Brake â In Theaters February 6th
It started out as a deadly home invasion by masked intruders. Then it became a town-wide conspiracy where some of the locals couldnât be trusted. Now, thereâs nowhere left to run and nowhere left to hide. Prepare for the final blood-soaked showdown in this third and final chapter of the newly reimagined horror trilogy of The Strangers.
After two films of escalating terror, this last chapter promises the inevitable clash weâve been bracing for as Madelaine Petsch once again returns as Maya, the lone survivor of a brutally violent home invasion who now finds herself trapped in a desolate small town where everyone seems to be in on the nightmare.
Directed by Renny Harlin, the filmmaker behind some of the genreâs most kinetic action thrillers such as Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, and Deep Blue Sea, the horror trilogy was shot consecutively back in 2022 with Harlin at the helm and Petsch as the main lead. Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent) also returns as Gregory, the now-unmasked slasher; Ema Horvath (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) returns as Shelly, the sadistic waitress; and veteran genre character actor Richard Brake (Barbarian) reprises his role as Sheriff Rotter, the corrupted lawman whose easy grin masks a darkness that runs deep.
Written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, and based on the characters created by Bryan Bertino, the film aims to close the trilogy with a brutal final blow â complete with all the blood and axe-swinging mayhem fans are expecting.
The masks come off (metaphorically, at least) when The Strangers: Chapter 3 hits theaters on February 6th.
đ„ âSafeâ 30th Anniversary Trailer: Todd Haynesâ Chilling Environmental Paranoia Drama Celebrates 30 Years With a Stunning 4K Restoration, Featuring Julianne Mooreâs Quietly Devastating Breakthrough Performance â Opening December 5th at IFC Center
Sure, Boogie Nights might have been the movie that officially put Julianne Moore on the map, earning her a first Oscar nomination for her astonishing career-defining performance as troubled porn star-turned-filmmaker Amber Waves. But arguably, the film that first made everyone sit up and take notice of what Julianne Moore could really do was Todd Haynesâ groundbreaking 1995 provocative drama Safe. In it, Moore played a L.A. housewife who has convinced herself that the environment is so toxic itâs slowly killing her, despite there being no proof to support her escalating fears.
The film also marked the arrival of Todd Haynes as a serious voice in â90s cinema, a filmmaker who would end up becoming one of the most distinctive and influential auteurs of his generation. And while indie films like Pulp Fiction, Slacker, Clerks, El Mariachi, and Sex, Lies, and Videotape were rightly getting all the attention in film magazines at the time, Haynesâs Safe has slowly emerged as one of the great films of that decade⊠perhaps even one of the most overlooked films of the â90s.
With its striking poster image of Moore wrapped from head to toe in a woven full-body suit against a desert landscape, the film has only grown more relevant in this new era of pandemics, misinformation, health-conscious obsessions, and mounting cultural paranoia. Now, thirty years after it first slipped under the skin of audiences, Safe celebrates its 30th anniversary with a newly restored 4K remastered version.
Beginning December 5th, IFC Center brings Safe back to the big screen, giving a whole new generation the chance to be quietly devastated by one of the most haunting films of the â90s. Watch as Moore delivers one of her defining performances as Carol White, a seemingly content Los Angeles housewife whose immaculate, pastel world begins to betray her. What starts as mild allergic reactions to fragrances, cleaners, and fumes soon spirals into something far more insidious, as her body rejects the very environment designed to keep her comfortable. She soon flees to a New Mexico retreat in search of answers... or at least relief. But the further she goes, the more the journey becomes internal, unearthing questions of identity, control, and the strange ways modern life deteriorates our sense of self.
Written and directed by Haynes, and co-starring Peter Friedman and Xander Berkeley, Safe remains a quietly radical landmark: unsettling, ambiguous, and unforgettable. Catch Safe in 4K at IFC Center next week. For more information click here at https://www.ifccenter.com/films/safe/

Fantastic roundup of upcoming releases. The Kraken trailer caught my attention for how it frames ecological disaster through genre horror, turning aquaculture's sonic treatment programs into a catalyst for mythological vengeance. It's a smart narrative device that reflects real debates about how fish farming technology affects marine ecosystems, from sonar impacts on cetaceans to broader habitat disruption. Scandinavian filmmakers seem particuarly adept at weaving environmental anxiety into creature features, likely because their maritime traditions carry genuine weight.
