July might be drawing to a close, but the summer movie season still has a few surprises left before it winds down. After weeks of major hits and unexpected duds, the box office is clearing the way for another big franchise comeback. Marvel and Sony are hoping to turn Spider-Man into their next major summer hit, and while this week’s movie slate has been thinned out for the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, the TV landscape is once again crowded with plenty of promising options.

🎥 WHAM! 10 Days In China

WHAM!’s landmark 1985 trip to China becomes a pop spectacle and cultural time capsule in Mike Christie’s retrospective documentary. Newly restored, digitized, and never-before-seen footage revisits the Beijing and Guangzhou concerts that made George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley the first Western pop act to perform in the country. Firsthand interviews add perspective to the cultural collision and political weight surrounding two young stars who suddenly found themselves performing on a much larger world stage.

There is a shark below, armed criminals above, and very little oxygen in between. Laura Marano and Antonio Banderas star in this ocean thriller about a dream diving vacation hijacked by criminals who force a group of friends beneath the surface. Staying underwater means suffocation, but coming up places them directly in the path of their captors. With a circling predator making either choice potentially fatal, survival depends on deciding which danger to face.

Peter Parker saved the world, but no one remembers he exists. Tom Holland returns as a more isolated, street-level Spider-Man, living anonymously in New York without MJ (Zendaya), Ned (Jacob Batalon), the Avengers, or high-tech backup. Destin Daniel Cretton directs as Michael Mando’s Scorpion reenters the picture, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher makes his big-screen debut, and Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner. The neighborhood may be smaller this time, but a possible mutation—and an apparent clash with the Hulk and a new mysterious foe (Sadie Sink)—suggest Peter’s problems are not.

12 years after its original release, Richard Linklater’s classic coming-of-age drama returns to theaters this weekend for a special anniversary screening. Ellar Coltrane stars as Mason, a Texas boy navigating divorce, new homes, family dinners, first loves, and the ordinary moments that shape a life. Filmed with the same cast from 2002 to 2013, the film follows Mason from childhood to college alongside Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, and Lorelei Linklater, capturing how children grow up, and how entire families change with them.

A new 4K restoration brings Ngozi Onwurah’s 1995 dystopian satire back to theaters through Janus Films. Set in a near-future Britain where Black residents have been confined to a segregated slum, the film turns the death of a young boy into the flashpoint for years of grief, anger, and systemic violence. Its collision of science fiction, political fury, and Afrofuturist imagery returns more than three decades later as both a landmark and a warning.
🎥 Hell’s Highway: The True Story of Highway Safety Films

Driver’s education once came with mangled wreckage and fresh corpses. For generations, learning road safety meant watching death in full color. Filmmaker and restorationist Bret Wood revisits notorious 1950s classroom shock films like Signal 30, tracing their rise as educational tools. Featuring restored footage and interviews with creators, this documentary examines a safety campaign that scared teenagers straight... and haunted them long after the projector stopped.

Hugh Jackman stars as an older, battered Robin of Loxley, a man weighed down by rebellion, regret, and the lives left behind in his wake. Directed by A Quiet Place: Day One’s Michael Sarnoski and co-starring Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, and Noah Jupe, this moody period thriller trades polished swashbuckling for blood, mud, chilly reflection, and one last shot at redemption. Scoot McNairy, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, and Jake Lacy round out this pursuit thriller, where knowing the killer’s identity does little good if she is always one move ahead.
