August is here! And while summer has made it over that proverbial hump, don’t go thinking the slate is any less crowded. This week is packed with a surprisingly wide variety of new releases. While many of the big-ticket items, like the new Spider-Man movie and Nolan’s much-buzzed-about Homer epic, have taken up most of the attention, there’s still an interesting batch of titles arriving on both the big and small screen. There’s plenty to choose from, and if you thought this week might offer a little breathing room, think again.
Like we do every week, we’ve compiled a list of the most notable new releases arriving over the next several days. So, whether you’re looking to catch a movie in theaters this weekend or planning to watch something on streaming or television, you may be surprised by just how many options are on the table.

🎥 Super Troopers 3
(Fri, Aug 7th — wide release)
Broken Lizard is back for another round of questionable police work, with those lovable, boneheaded state troopers returning for more roadside mischief and spectacular incompetence. Jay Chandrasekhar once again directs and stars alongside Paul Soter, Steve Lemme, Erik Stolhanske, and Kevin Heffernan. This time, Farva’s extravagant engagement to Thorny’s sister threatens to tear the group apart, while a dangerous new drug ring gives the Troopers an even bigger mess to completely mishandle.

Sometimes it only takes one night to find a real connection. It just so happens to be the one night built for anything but commitment. Monica Barbaro stars as Allie, a hopeful romantic navigating a government-sanctioned hookup holiday in New York City, while Callum Turner plays Owen, a recently dumped pizza shop owner. Written and directed by Will Gluck (Anyone but You, Easy A), this high-concept rom-com sends Allie and Owen through missteps, detours, and late-night mayhem as the city keeps pulling them apart; proving that even on a night designed for fleeting pleasure, something real can still find a way through.

You scream, we all scream for ice cream... and horror maestro Eli Roth is here to make sure those screams are anything but sweet. Returning to his slasher roots, Roth delivers an off-the-wall chiller set in the seemingly peaceful town of Bayleen Bay, where a mysterious ice cream vendor (Ari Millen) serves frozen treats with horrifying consequences. When local children descend into violent madness, the adults must confront a grotesque outbreak that transforms summer nostalgia into suburban terror, making this one ice cream man worth running from... not toward.
🎥 Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

With a title like that, you know you’re in for something unusual. I Saw the TV Glow writer-director Jane Schoenbrun is back with another neon-soaked meta-horror head-scratcher destined for cult status. Hacks’ Hannah Einbinder stars as a rising young horror filmmaker hired to revive the cult Camp Miasma slasher franchise by bringing its original final girl, played by Gillian Anderson, back for one last encore. But this is no routine reboot, as things mutate into something far stranger... and far more psychosexual as the two women become entangled in obsession, attraction, and shared trauma.

Before Anthony Bourdain became a culinary icon, he was merely a 19-year-old aspiring writer searching for direction. Dominic Sessa stars in Matt Johnson’s 1976-set origin story, which sends the young Tony to Provincetown for a summer job at a Cape Cod restaurant. Hired by a commanding chef (Antonio Banderas), he is pulled into the frantic, profane, and seductive world of professional kitchens, where pressure, precision, and hard work begin reshaping his own ambitions. What starts as seasonal work quickly becomes the spark that changes the course of his life.

Fame has a strange way of arriving late, as Willem Dafoe stars as a forgotten New York poet whose quiet life changes when a group of young artists rediscovers his work and treats him like a newly discovered literary genius. Greta Lee and Edmund Donovan also star in filmmaker Kent Jones’s bittersweet drama about just how fleeting fame and notoriety can be—and whether recognition offers lasting fulfillment or simply reopens emotional wounds you weren’t quite ready to confront.

Growing up gets painfully complicated when freedom collides with family duty. Newcomer Aivan Uttapa stars as Olmo, a 14-year-old Mexican American in 1979 New Mexico who sneaks away from caring for his bedridden father (Gustavo Sánchez Parra) to attend a party with his next-door crush (Melanie Frometa). Directed by Mexican filmmaker Fernando Eimbcke (of Duck Season), this bittersweet coming-of-age comedy-drama follows one reckless night of mischief and painful consequences as Olmo discovers the home he longs to escape may be the only place where he finally begins to understand himself.

Callan Mulvey stars as an aging smuggler attempting one final job in a post-pandemic world devastated by a global fertility crisis. When a runaway teenager and her baby become targets of ruthless criminals, the delivery turns into a brutal test of loyalty, morality, and sacrifice in this dystopian action thriller, where the most valuable cargo may also be humanity’s only hope.

Blu Hunt stars as a woman whose jaw has been wired shut since a drunk-driving accident weeks earlier. Determined to prove she can return to normal, she finds that her inability to speak clearly turns every strained friendship, awkward encounter, and bad decision into something much bigger. As resentment increasingly builds, one ordinary evening with friends spirals into a parade of falsehoods she can’t quite talk her way out of. Written and directed by Sabrina Greco, this dark comedy wonders whether silence is still golden when the truth becomes harder to swallow.

Four young women compete to become top Girl Scout Cookie sellers in this coming-of-age documentary from director Alysa Nahmias. Looking beyond sales totals and familiar cookie-season traditions, the film explores the ambition, pressure, joy and tension the girls experience while learning that success involves far more than moving boxes.

Love becomes a vow, then a mission. Inspired by Fleur Pierets’ book, Cato Kusters’ tender queer drama follows Fleur and Julian as their romance grows into a plan to marry in every country where two women are legally allowed to do so. Nina Meurisse and Laurence Roothooft star in a love story that transforms private devotion into a public act of visibility, defiance, and hope. Sometimes saying “I do” once is not enough.

A road trip across the American West searches for the remaining small-town movie theaters and the communities working to keep them alive. Empty marquees and vacant seats become symbols of a disappearing moviegoing culture in this documentary about a time when cinema was not merely something people watched, but somewhere they went together.
🎥 Center Stage: 35th Anniversary (4K Restoration)

Stanley Kwan’s 1991 Hong Kong classic returns in a new 4K restoration for its 35th anniversary. This unconventional portrait of Chinese silent-screen icon Ruan Lingyu features an award-winning performance from Maggie Cheung as the celebrated actress whose private life, public image, and tabloid persecution begin to echo the melodramas that made her famous. Blending period recreation, archival footage, interviews, and Cheung’s personal reflections, the film transforms biography into a conversation between two actresses separated by half a century.
🎥 Tales from Earthsea: 20th Anniversary

The balance of the world is cracking, and the dragons know it first. Goro Miyazaki’s anime fantasy follows Archmage Sparrowhawk and troubled prince Arren across Earthsea, where failing crops, returning dragons, and dark magic point to a realm coming apart. Based on Ursula K. Le Guin’s books and featuring the English-language voices of Timothy Dalton, Willem Dafoe, Mariska Hargitay, and Cheech Marin, this 20th anniversary screening brings the Studio Ghibli epic back to theaters.
🎥 Only Yesterday: 35th Anniversary

Growing up does not mean the past stops talking. Isao Takahata’s anime drama follows Taeko, a 27-year-old Tokyo office worker whose countryside trip brings back memories of childhood, first crushes, family tensions, and the girl she used to be. With Hayao Miyazaki as general producer and Daisy Ridley, Dev Patel, and Alison Fernandez in the English-language cast, this 35th anniversary screening brings one of Studio Ghibli’s most reflective films back to the big screen.
