“Peacemaker: Season 2” Teaser: John Cena Returns for More Violent, Goofy Mayhem with New Superhero Cameos – Premiering August 21st on MAX
While the jury is still out on whether James Gunn will deliver an awesome Superman movie this summer that will connect with audiences everywhere, here’s what we do know: Gunn might have already delivered one of the most violently goofy superhero series that’s ever graced our screens. One so ridiculously bombastic and farcical that it might just be the best thing John Cena has ever starred in. In fact, he might be perfect as the helmet-wearing mercenary Peacemaker, whose list of kills is as long as his list of questionable decisions.
Peacemaker, a spin-off series from Gunn’s 2021 DC film The Suicide Squad, is a rare combination of pure superhero camp and heavy metal anarchy. It’s a wild ride that balances absurd humor, intense blood-gushing action, and a surprising amount of heart, all while giving Cena the perfect platform to showcase his unique brand of comedic violence.
Now, we don’t know if Gunn’s new Superman movie will be any good, nor if it will live up to the hype, but Peacemaker might be Gunn at his most Gunn-iest as it’s a blend of chaotic humor, offbeat characters, and over-the-top action. Which is everything we’ve come to love about Gunn’s unique style of storytelling.
With Peacemaker Season 2 coming this summer on August 21st on MAX, following the release of Gunn’s Superman in July, the series will see John Cena return to the title role. He’ll reunite with A.R.G.U.S. special black ops team, including agent Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), agent Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), agent John Economos (Steve Agee), the homicidal crimefighting doofus Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), and of course, Eagly, Peacemaker’s loyal pet eagle. But this time, Peacemaker will have to contend with Rick Flag Sr. (played by Frank Grillo), who brings some heavy emotional baggage, particularly the whole "Peacemaker killing his son" thing. Looks like the stakes are higher than ever!
Plus, fans can expect some cool cameos in this new season, including Green Lantern’s Guy Gardner (played by Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (played by The Last of Us: Season 2’s Isabela Merced), both of whom are coming straight from Gunn’s Superman movie. Watch the Season 2 teaser trailer above!
“Foundation: Season 3” Teaser: A Galactic Empire on the Brink in This Epic Sci-Fi Saga Based on Isaac Asimov’s Legendary Novels – Premiering July 11th on Apple TV+
To be honest, it’s hard to keep up with all the new TV shows right now. And how many times have we asked ourselves which streaming services have which show to stream? It can be confusing at times. Take Apple TV+, for example. It’s mostly known for being the home of Ted Lasso and Severance, as these two are arguably their most popular shows. But how many people know what other shows they offer?
Now take, for instance, Foundation. It’s a highly ambitious science fiction series that seemingly has the same budget size as a summer blockbuster. The special effects and costumes are simply top-shelf quality, making it one of the standout titles in Apple TV+’s growing library. Yet, we imagine not a lot of people even knew of its existence, nor that the show will soon be launching its third season.
And with the teaser released this past week, the new season not only looks epic but perhaps the type of series made specifically for sci-fi junkies who claim to love franchises like Star Wars and Dune. And perhaps there’s a reason for that, as Foundation is the small-screen adaptation of sci-fi legend Isaac Asimov’s classic book series, which was once considered unadaptable. It’s also the very same series that’s said to have inspired sci-fi epics like Star Wars and Dune.
Featuring a strong ensemble cast that includes Lee Pace, Jared Harris, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, and Cassian Bilton, the series has been a critical success as it sets the events leading to a predicted collapse of a galactic empire, while a visionary mathematician and his followers fight to preserve civilization’s history and knowledge while navigating rebellion, betrayal, and the rise of a threat that could change destiny itself.
Game of Thrones actor Pilou Asbæk joins Season 3, with new cast additions including Cherry Jones, Ralph Ineson, and Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur.
Executive produced by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman, Foundation returns for its third season this summer, beginning July 11, only on Apple TV+.
“Adults” Trailer: Nick Kroll-Produced Comedy Series Follows Twentysomethings Facing the Realities of Adulthood – Streaming on Hulu/FX May 28th
Every now and again, there’s a television show that explores the lives of twenty-something singles as they struggle with the realities of being adults. And the few lucky shows that are able to break out become a cultural moment for a certain generation, perhaps becoming the launchpad for a cast of relatively unknown newcomers who go on to have bigger careers. Well, could this be that show? Could this be, dare we say, the next Friends? Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. But for now, enjoy the first official trailer for Adults.
Executive produced by comedian Nick Kroll (Big Mouth) and created by comedy writers Ben Kronengold & Rebecca Shaw (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), this new FX series certainly fills a void of twenty-something comedies in the vein of Friends, but also shows like New Girl, How I Met Your Mother, and Coupling, among others.
Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Malik Elassal, Lucy Freyer, Jack Innanen, Amita Rao, and Owen Thiele, the series follows a group of twenty-something housemates in New York City as they tackle the responsibilities of adulthood to varying degrees of success.
All eight episodes of Adults will begin streaming on Hulu on Wednesday, May 28th, under the FX banner. Now, just be grateful your days of living with roommates are behind you... unless, of course, you’re still living like that. In that case, make sure you can borrow someone’s Hulu password!
“Squid Game: Season 3” Teaser: The Shocking Final Season Begins with Gi-hun’s Last Fight for Survival – Streaming on Netflix June 27th
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind the Emmy-winning phenomenon Squid Game, might go down in Netflix history for creating one of the platform’s most acclaimed and most viewed shows in its catalog. And in a time where appointment viewing is nearly dead, with everyone watching shows and movies at their own time and pace, Squid Game might be one of the few scripted series where fans have not only marked their calendars for the next season but also eagerly anticipated each new twist, making it a rare cultural event in the streaming era.
Well, sadly, nothing lasts forever. Hwang Dong-hyuk is making sure this new third season will be the show’s grand finale, aiming to deliver an unforgettable conclusion that will likely leave fans on the edge of their sofas. Picking up immediately in the aftermath of Season 2’s shocking cliffhanger, the season begins with Gi-hun, a.k.a. Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), at his lowest point yet, having witnessed a failed rebellion. Grappling with a heartbreaking betrayal and the death of a friend, Gi-hun must once again face new challenges in the Squid Game, as the life-or-death contest has not only evolved but has grown even more dangerous than before.
Squid Game: Season 3 will start streaming Friday, June 27th. Get a taste of what’s to come with the Season 3 teaser trailer, watch it above.
“Big Mouth: The Final Season” Trailer: Nick Kroll's Wildly Irreverent Animated Series Concludes with One Last Puberty-Fueled Ride – Streaming on Netflix May 23rd
How can one describe Netflix's highly irreverent animated series Big Mouth to someone who doesn't know anything about it? Okay, picture Pixar's Inside Out, but if each character is constantly navigating awkward teenage hormones, embarrassing puberty moments, and the chaotic, often inappropriate aspects of growing up. It's basically Inside Out's evil cousin and, for our money, a hundred times funnier, as it uses plenty of crude humor to convey the excruciating inelegance of adolescence. And believe it or not, it's one of Netflix's longest-running original scripted series the streaming company has ever produced.
Well, this month, the animated series is coming to its end as it prepares to launch its eighth and final season. So, break out those tissues... that is to say, tissues for your tears, not other bodily fluids.
Hailing from the comic mind of Nick Kroll and his co-creating and writing collaborators Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett, the series started off as a vulgar animated comedy based on Kroll and Goldberg's own adolescent years growing up in suburban New York, dealing with their embarrassing puberty experiences. Kroll and Goldberg, who have been best friends since childhood, added Levin and Flackett to contribute their own personal stories to the series, creating a brutally honest and often absurd portrayal of growing up... but if their hormones were personified into creepy imaginary monsters like Maurice (voiced by Kroll) and Connie (Maya Rudolph).
So, get ready for a happy ending like no other as Big Mouth: The Final Season arrives on Netflix on Friday, May 23rd.
“Motorheads” Trailer: Grief, Rivalries, and Muscle Cars Fuel This Coming-of-Age Street Racing Teen Series Starring Michael Cimino and Melissa Collazo with Ryan Phillippe – Premiering May 20th on Prime Video
Sometimes the best way to deal with inner turmoil is to face it head-on, preferably in an old souped-up muscle car rebuilt with your own two hands.
Motorheads, a new coming-of-age series for Amazon Prime, is less Fast and Furious and more Footloose, just minus the Kenny Loggins and replacing illegal dancing with illegal street car racing.
The story follows Zac and Caitlyn, a brother and sister duo (played by Michael Cimino and Melissa Collazo), who move to a small, struggling rust-belt town where their late father grew up. Still grieving the loss of their dad, a former local street racing legend, Zac and Caitlyn try to adjust to life at their new school.
Trouble arises when they clash with the school’s most popular kid, a street racer himself. Determined to honor their father’s legacy, Zac and Caitlyn hatch a plan to rebuild his old, beaten-up muscle car for a high-stakes street race to earn respect. Along the way, they rally a team of fellow school misfits to help bring the car back to life and take on their rivals.
The series is created by John A. Norris (All American, Bull) and also stars Ryan Phillippe, Nathalie Kelley, Uriah Shelton, Nicolas Cantu, Drake Rodger, Johnna Dias-Watson, Josh Macqueen, Mia Healey, and Matt Lanter.
Neil Burger (Limitless, The Illusionist, Divergent) directs the first two episodes.
Motorheads is slated to premiere Tuesday, May 20, only on Prime Video.
