📺 “Rooster” Trailer: Steve Carell Plays a Famous Novelist Mistaken for a Much Cooler Version of Himself in HBO’s Campus-Set Comedy Series with Charly Clive & Phil Dunster — Premiering Sunday, March 8th on HBO/HBO MAX
At this point in his career, Steve Carell can play social discomfort in his sleep after years of playing characters who are mostly well intentioned but perpetually one wrong social cue away from disaster. The thing that has always set Carell apart from comedians known for pure buffoonery is his ability to layer genuine vulnerability beneath the discomfort. His characters aren’t just insecure; they’re quietly trying to be better, which gives the jokes a slightly bruised, human edge rather than treating them as the punchline.
Carell returns to TV with a brand-new HBO series that not only lets him play to his strengths but also nudges him into more introspective territory, as a loving father who wants to do right by his daughter, only for his own personal needs to take precedence.
In Rooster, a new dramedy series hailing from co-showrunners Bill Lawrence (Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Scrubs) and Matt Tarses (Scrubs), Carell stars as a popular novelist best known for his pulpy crime series about a laid-back private eye named Rooster; a character far smoother, cooler, and more confident than the man who created him. His real life is messier, however. His relationship with his daughter, played by British actress Charly Clive, is strained and complicated, especially as she navigates her own personal implosion as a college professor at an Ivy League school after her husband (Phil Dunster) leaves her for a much younger grad student. Naturally, Carell’s character wants to help. Whether he should is another question entirely.
When the university dean (John C. McGinley) offers him a mentorship role, Carell jumps at the chance, seeing it as a way to be closer to his daughter. But once on campus, something unexpected happens. Students begin confusing him with his fictional alter ego, and for the first time in a long while, he likes who they think he is. What starts as a well-meaning attempt to play dad quickly spirals into a self-discovery journey, as Carell’s character embraces the intoxicating idea of becoming one of the cool guys on campus, a role he’s not entirely sure how to let go of.
Featuring a strong supporting cast that includes Danielle Deadwyler and Lauren Tsai, along with guest turns from Annie Mumolo, Scott MacArthur, Robby Hoffman, and Connie Britton, Rooster is slated to debut Sunday, March 8th on HBO and HBO Max.
📺 “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette” Trailer: America’s Most Watched and Tragic Romance Revisited in Ryan Murphy’s New Limited Series Starring Sarah Pidgeon & Paul Kelly — Premiering Thursday, February 12th on FX & FX on Hulu
The Kennedy family might be the closest thing Americans ever had to royalty. The public obsession with them has mirrored the same type of fascination the Brits have with their royals. Similarly, the Kennedy dynasty rose from immense wealth into political power and cultural influence, while also enduring immense tragedy felt throughout the nation.
It wasn’t that long ago that the American people were infatuated with the life of John F. Kennedy Jr.; someone who, from the day he was born to the day he tragically died, was always in the public eye, living under a microscope. And his romance with Calvin Klein publicist Carolyn Bessette was quickly, and perhaps unfairly, transformed into a modern media fairy tale; one built less on who they actually were and more on what the public desperately wanted them to represent.
It will be almost 27 years since John and Carolyn’s deaths, who tragically perished in a plane crash in 1999, leaving a nation stunned and reigniting talk of a so-called family curse. But leave it up to mega–executive producer Ryan Murphy to revisit this love story through a modern perspective, especially as the political and celebrity landscape has dramatically shifted since the days of John and Carolyn.
FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette turns the clock back three decades to the culture, the headlines, and the memories of a romance that captured America’s full attention. Launching as the first installment of Ryan Murphy’s new Love Story anthology and created by Connor Hines, the limited series traces the chemistry, whirlwind courtship, and high-profile marriage of a couple whose private bond was relentlessly lived out in public under intense media scrutiny.
Sarah Pidgeon, best known for starring in the hit Broadway rock musical Stereophonic and the horror sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer, stars as Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, who climbed from sales assistant to Calvin Klein executive, becoming a trusted confidante of the designer himself while dating one of America’s most famous bachelors.
Relative newcomer Paul Kelly takes on the task of portraying John F. Kennedy Jr., the well-to-do heir of the family dynasty who was primed to become a defining public figure of his generation—set up from birth for a life straddling politics, philanthropy, and celebrity.
Naomi Watts co-stars as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, with Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy. The supporting cast includes Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein, Leila George as Kelly Klein, and Noah Fearnley as Michael Bergin.
Inspired by Elizabeth Beller’s book Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, the miniseries doesn’t just chronicle a romance; it examines the cost of being watched too closely for too long, revealing how fame can quietly corrode even the most intimate moments of a couple’s life.
Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette premieres Thursday, February 12th on FX and FX on Hulu.
📺 “Young Sherlock” New Trailer: Guy Ritchie Takes Sherlock Holmes Back to Oxford for a High-Stakes Origin Story in Amazon’s New Action-Mystery Series Starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin — Premiering Wed, March 4th on Prime Video
Sherlock Holmes is one of a few timeless characters that even the name alone evokes a sense of certainty in the type of story audiences are stepping into. So, a new show about the early years of Sherlock Holmes, one could reasonably assume, will come with a great mystery for him to solve. That part is a given. But this is also a project coming from filmmaker Guy Ritchie, who has already tackled the character before in a pair of Hollywood blockbusters, where he retooled Holmes into a bruising action hero whose physicality was just as formidable as his intellect. So, one could also assume this new show won’t just be about clues and deductions, but will lean into a youthful swagger, as this version of Sherlock is still figuring himself out. His instincts are still very much being sharpened and shaped through trial and missteps. But from the look of things, his confidence and self-assurance are already there.
Young Sherlock is a new Amazon original series in which Guy Ritchie returns to Baker Street, diving once more into the world of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s perennial detective creation, Sherlock Holmes. This time, Sherlock is a sharp, cocky 19-year-old Oxford student about to tackle his first major mystery; one involving a school break-in, a hidden bomb, and a growing list of suspicious suspects who may be far more dangerous than they initially appear.
Hero Fiennes Tiffin, the nephew of actors Ralph and Joseph Fiennes, is tapped to lead the series as the one and only Sherlock Holmes. But it’s a Holmes we don’t normally get to see. He’s still unpolished and very much in the process of becoming a formidable detective with a razor-sharp mind for deduction. His background, however, is a bit rougher around the edges, shaped by a past that includes pickpocketing and light larceny before ultimately landing him at Oxford.
Despite being known for not working well with others, this young Sherlock finds himself teaming up with a fellow Oxford classmate, James Moriarty (played by Dónal Finn). He is, of course, the man who will eventually become Sherlock’s greatest foe, but at this stage he’s an ally, operating more as a kindred spirit than a sworn enemy. The two volunteer to investigate the school break-in, which ultimately leads to a whole lot of trouble, uncovering a conspiracy far bigger and more dangerous than either of them initially expects; one that ends with Sherlock finding himself framed for murder.
Others in the cast include Zine Tseng (3 Body Problem) as a young Chinese princess and skilled martial artist who becomes central to the mysterious break-in, while Natascha McElhone (Californication) plays Cordelia Holmes, Sherlock’s mother. Max Irons (Condor) steps into the role of Mycroft, Sherlock’s older brother. A mustachioed Colin Firth appears as Sir Bucephalus Hodge, and in a perfectly on-theme bit of casting symmetry, Joseph Fiennes guest stars as Sherlock’s father; making it a true family affair.
Executed by showrunner Matthew Parkhill alongside Guy Ritchie, who also directs the majority of the eight-episode season, Young Sherlock is slated to premiere Wednesday, March 4th on Prime Video.
