TV Trailers of the Week: Platonic: Season 2, Butterfly, The Girlfriend, Red Eye, Women Wearing Shoulder Pads, Hostage and More
Take a peek at some of the latest trailers for upcoming TV shows.
✪ “Platonic: Season 2” Trailer: Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen Return as Dysfunctional Best Friends in New Season of Their Hit Comedy Series — Premiering August 6th on Apple TV+
Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen are still not a couple... and they’re still a complete mess together. But nothing is going to split up these two platonic best friends—unless their significant others get in the way of their beautifully dysfunctional dynamic.
Platonic returns with more laughs and awkward encounters when Season 2 premieres next month. This time, lifelong pals Sylvia and Will (Byrne and Rogen) return for another round of emotional mayhem, questionable decisions, and the kind of brutally honest friendship that only gets weirder with age. Still strictly platonic (emphasis on strictly), this midlife duo proves that growing up is overrated, and maturity is optional.
After reconnecting in Season 1, their bond has only gotten stronger… and more destructive. As Sylvia tries to balance motherhood, marriage, and professional ambition, and Will attempts to piece together his post-divorce life with a new girlfriend, their friendship becomes both a source of comfort and a fresh kind of crisis. Whether they’re sabotaging relationships or crashing each other’s big life moments, one thing’s clear: codependency has never been so fun to watch.
Created by Francesca Delbanco and Nicholas Stoller, Platonic also stars Luke Macfarlane, Tre Hale, Carla Gallo, and Andrew Lopez, with Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, and Beck Bennett joining the cast of Season 2.
Platonic: Season 2 is set to debut Wednesday, August 6th, only on Apple TV+.
✪ “Butterfly” Trailer: Daniel Dae Kim and Reina Hardesty Face Off as Spy Dad and Assassin Daughter in This New Espionage Action Series — Premiering August 13th on Prime Video
Being a spy is hard. Being a father is also extremely difficult. Being both... well, that’s a disaster waiting to happen. Especially when you discover your daughter has followed in your footsteps... and now has the skills to kill you in a heartbeat.
In the upcoming action spy thriller series Butterfly, Lost actor Daniel Dae Kim gets to flex his action chops, starring as former U.S. intelligence operative David Jung. While trying to keep a low profile in South Korea, having been presumed dead for years, David is forced out of the shadows to reconnect with his now adult daughter Rebecca (played by Reina Hardesty from the Netflix horror film It's What's Inside).
After believing her father was dead and being trained to be a cold-blooded assassin by the very same ruthless CIA boss who once recruited David, Rebecca is shocked to discover her father is still alive. The problem? David is now on a kill list, and Rebecca must choose between her loyalty to her father or the woman (Piper Perabo) who shaped her into the deadly operative she is today.
As the walls close in, David must convince his daughter to help bring down the agency once and for all. It's the only way they can truly be safe and finally have a shot at a life together without constantly looking over their shoulders. With emotional wreckage to sort through and old wounds left unhealed, David and Rebecca could be the ultimate spy team. But some second chances come with a body count... and if they’re not careful, they might end up in a body bag after this is all through.
From co-creators Ken Woodruff and Steph Cha, Butterfly also stars Park Hae-soo, Kim Ji-hoon, Lee Il-hwa, Kim Tae-hee, Sung Dong-il, Louis Landau, and Charles Parnell. The series is set to premiere Wednesday, August 13th on Prime Video.
✪ “The Girlfriend” Teaser: Robin Wright Suspects Something Sinister About Her Son’s Perfect New Love in This New Thriller Series — Premiering September 10th on Prime Video
For most adoring mothers, seeing their son happy is the most important thing they could hope for. But what if that happiness comes from a new girlfriend... one who might be a little controlling and a little too perfect? And most fishy of all, perhaps this new girlfriend is a little too much like dear old mom. Now that would be... unsettling. ‘Cause love her or hate her, there’s nothing worse than a mother’s hatred aimed at a son’s new love.
In this new thriller series The Girlfriend, eight-time Emmy-nominee Robin Wright (House of Cards) stars as Laura, a high-powered career woman who seemingly has the perfect life—a doting husband (Waleed Zuaiter, Gangs of London) and a close bond with her only son, Daniel (Laurie Davidson, Masters of the Air, Will).
But when Daniel introduces his new girlfriend Cherry (played by House of the Dragon’s Olivia Cooke), Laura’s world tilts. Beautiful, charming, and just a little too sophisticated and sultry for her liking, Cherry sets off every alarm bell in Laura’s mind.
What begins as maternal suspicion soon spirals into a dangerous game of cat and mouse. Is Cherry a cunning manipulator sinking her claws into the family? Or is Laura unraveling, blinded by jealousy and control? Because in this family, there’s only room for one Machiavellian diva... so, may the best woman win.
Based on the best-selling novel by Michelle Frances and adapted for television by executive producers Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher, The Girlfriend is slated to premiere September 10th on Prime Video.
✪ “Red Eye” Trailer: Richard Armitage and Jing Lusi Are Trapped on a Non-Stop Flight with a Killer in This High-Altitude British Thriller Series — Premiering July 22nd on Hulu
It’s murder at 30,000 feet. With 237 passengers onboard a non-stop flight from England to China, one detective has only 10 hours to catch an assassin.
In the new British thriller series Red Eye, Richard Armitage (The Hobbit trilogy) stars as Dr. Matthew Nolan. After being arrested for the murder of a Chinese woman he claims he never met, Nolan is being extradited to Beijing.
Assigned to escort him on the overnight flight is Detective Hana Li (Jing Lusi, Gangs of London, Crazy Rich Asians), a by-the-book London officer with no time for games. But when a violent incident rocks the plane mid-flight, Hana begins to suspect there’s far more to this case—and this passenger—than she was told.
Trapped thousands of feet in the air, the two are thrust into a web of international intrigue and buried secrets, as Nolan insists he’s been framed. If he’s telling the truth, then there’s a professional assassin on board with one mission: eliminate the target—and anyone who gets in the way.
From Flightplan writer Peter A. Dowling, Red Eye is a white-knuckle thrill ride that turns a long-haul flight into a deadly pressure cooker at altitude.
All episodes of the series are set to release this Tuesday, July 22nd on Hulu.
✪ “Women Wearing Shoulder Pads” Trailer: Marionette Mayhem and Telenovela Tropes Collide in Adult Swim’s New Bizarre Stop-Motion Comedy Series — Premieres August 17th at Midnight on Comedy Central
Are you in the mood for something different? Something that will make you go, what the hell is this and why am I somehow drawn to it like bugs to a zapper? Well, look no further than this: it’s a stop-motion comedy that spoofs telenovelas, featuring an all-female cast made up entirely of marionettes. It’s as if Pedro Almodóvar handed his next project to the crew behind Robot Chicken. It’s got passion, power, and plenty of polyester. Get ready for a melodrama like no other!
Women Wearing Shoulder Pads is a stop-motion spoof of telenovelas that dials up the drama, the fashion, and the ridiculous stakes to gloriously exaggerated heights. The series follows Marioneta, a fabulously wealthy and ruthlessly ambitious Spaniard living in South America, as she juggles power plays, forbidden romances, and eyebrow-raising plot twists—all with style, scandal, and shoulder pads to spare.
Told entirely in Spanish with English subtitles, this irreverent Adult Swim comedy comes from creator Gonzalo Cordova (Tuca & Bertie, Adam Ruins Everything) and the brilliant animators at Cinema Fantasma (Frankelda’s Book of Spooks). Think: soap opera meets surrealist puppet theater... only served with a thick side of satire.
Women Wearing Shoulder Pads is set to premiere Sunday, August 17th at midnight on Adult Swim (Comedy Central), streaming the next day on HBO Max.
✪ “Hostage” Teaser: Suranne Jones Is a Prime Minister Pushed to the Edge in Netflix’s New British Political Thriller Series with Julie Delpy — Premieres August 21st on Netflix
As an elected leader of a nation, a president's loyalties should always be with their people. Some might even say the people’s needs come first before the leader’s own interests. But what if a president is pushed to the brink, and all they have left is to think of their family first? The question becomes: how far would you go for the ones you love?
From Matt Charman, the Oscar-nominated writer of Bridge of Spies and creator of the Netflix limited series Treason, comes a new British political thriller that turns global diplomacy into personal warfare.
Hostage stars acclaimed British actress Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack) as British Prime Minister Rachel Anthony, a leader who suddenly finds herself torn between protecting her country and saving her family. When her husband is kidnapped during a high-stakes state visit, the PM must confront the unthinkable. With negotiations crumbling and pressure mounting, she takes desperate steps to secure her husband’s safety—risking everything as she toes the line between national duty and personal stakes.
Meanwhile, as threats escalate and buried secrets come to light, her French counterpart Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy, of Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy) is drawn into the same deadly game... where every decision could trigger international disaster.
Also starring Corey Mylchreest, Lucian Msamati, Ashley Thomas, James Cosmo, Martin McCann, and Jehnny Beth, Hostage is slated to premiere Thursday, August 21st on Netflix.
