📺 “Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness” First Look Clip: Larry David Turns America’s 250th Anniversary Into a Comedy of Complaints in HBO’s New Sketch Series — Premiering Fri, June 26 on HBO/HBO Max
Let’s face it, we’re living in strange times. What’s up feels like down. And what’s supposed to be right suddenly feels completely wrong. So when it comes time to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary this July, you might imagine gathering some of our greatest historians and maybe even having Ken Burns film something to commemorate the moment. But then again, that might be a little too sensible.
So, enter Larry David!
Because he might actually be the perfect voice for the moment; someone who understands that America seems to be going through something right now, and that maybe the best way to process it is to laugh at what came before as we try to figure out where we are.
Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness is a new HBO original limited sketch series from Curb Your Enthusiasm creator and star Larry David, who is once again joined by his longtime Curb producing and writing collaborator Jeff Schaffer. The two both write and executive produce the project, with Schaffer also directing.
Produced by Higher Ground, the production company founded by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, the official setup is that the Obamas wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary with a celebration of the nation’s unique history. And who better than Larry David to call when you want to revisit America’s past... and complain about it along the way?
Besides David himself, the seven-episode comedy series will feature appearances from several familiar faces from Curb Your Enthusiasm, alongside a number of guest stars popping in throughout the run. And if David’s past work is any indication, viewers can probably expect a celebration of American history that quickly spirals into awkward misunderstandings, petty arguments, and wildly misread social cues... the kind that only Larry David can deliver.
Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness is slated to premiere Friday, June 26th on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
📺 “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair” Trailer: Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston & Jane Kaczmarek Return for Hal and Lois’s 40th Anniversary in This Four-Episode Reunion Special — Premiering Fri, April 10th on Hulu/Disney+
Long before Bryan Cranston became globally recognized as Walter White in the Emmy-winning drama Breaking Bad, he was best known as Malcolm’s absent-minded dad in the beloved early-2000s sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. Here’s a fun fact: both characters were known to walk around in their tighty-whities, perhaps giving Cranston the rare distinction of being the actor we’ve most often seen in his underwear... or barely dressed at all.
So why give up a good thing?
Cranston returns as Hal, the well-meaning doofus patriarch, in this upcoming Malcolm in the Middle reunion event where… yes!… he’s back in the buff, getting nicely groomed for the occasion. But it’s nothing we haven’t seen before.
Nearly two decades after the original sitcom signed off, the Wilkerson clan is back in Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, a four-part reunion special that doubles as both a nostalgia trip and a reminder that some families never really change.
Frankie Muniz returns as Malcolm, who is now in his 40s and has a teen daughter of his own. Muniz joins Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek back as Hal and Lois, with original cast members Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield also returning as Malcolm’s brothers Francis and Reese.
The reunion centers around Hal and Lois celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary, an event that, in any normal family, might involve a heartfelt toast and a quiet dinner. But when this particular household gathers under one roof, chaos isn’t just inevitable—it’s practically the guest of honor.
These days, Malcolm is a working father raising a teenage daughter (played by Keeley Karsten). And much like his own dad before him, he’s discovering that parenting comes with a few lingering emotional scars. Malcolm’s life had been going pretty smoothly, too... well, at least as long as he kept a healthy distance from his family. But that plan, as it turns out, was never going to last.
The reunion special also introduces a few new faces. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark steps in as Dewey, replacing Erik Per Sullivan, who retired from acting after the original series ended. Kiana Madeira joins the cast as Malcolm’s girlfriend Tristan, while Emy Coligado returns as Piama, Francis’s sharp-tongued Alaskan wife. Meanwhile, Vaughan Murrae plays Kelly, the youngest sibling teased in the show’s finale when Lois revealed she was pregnant with a daughter.
Series creator Linwood Boomer returns as writer and executive producer for the revival, bringing the family back together for four 30-minute episodes likely packed with the same manic energy that made the original sitcom such a favorite.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair premieres Friday, April 10th as a Hulu and Disney+ exclusive comedy special.
📺 “Man on Fire” Teaser Trailer: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Steps Into the Role of Revenge-Driven Bodyguard John Creasy in Netflix’s Gritty New Series Adaptation — Premiering Thurs, April 30th on Netflix
Here’s something most people might not know offhand: Tony Scott’s blistering 2004 action film Man on Fire, starring Denzel Washington as John Creasy, a former CIA operative turned bodyguard mercenary who launches a violent crusade after the girl he was hired to protect is kidnapped, was actually a remake of sorts. An earlier version was released in 1987, starring Scott Glenn as Creasy and drawing from the same source material, A. J. Quinnell’s best-selling 1980 crime novel.
So, before people get all bent out of shape to learn that Netflix has made a new remake, know this: as much as we all loved Tony Scott and Denzel Washington’s version, it wasn’t exactly the original.
Developed by Kyle Killen (creator of NBC’s Awake and co-showrunner of Paramount’s Halo), this new Netflix series has Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stepping into the role of the haunted protector John Creasy. Fresh off his starring role as Marvel’s Wonder Man, Abdul-Mateen goes from Hollywood’s latest superhero to an unstoppable force as Creasy, a once-elite Special Forces mercenary known for surviving the most brutal and unforgiving environments imaginable. Plagued by severe PTSD from years of a violent career and wrestling with his own personal demons, Creasy sets out in search of redemption and a chance to rebuild a life beyond conflict.
Unfortunately, peace doesn’t come easily for a man like Creasy. He’s quickly pulled back into chaos when violence erupts around a young girl caught in the middle of dangerous forces. Once again, Creasy becomes the man standing between innocence and destruction… a man on fire.
Joining Abdul-Mateen is a strong supporting cast that includes Billie Boullet (star of the Anne Frank miniseries A Small Light) as Poe Rayburn, a rebellious teenager struggling to adjust to life in Rio, Brazil, whose world changes after witnessing a traumatic event that puts her in grave danger.
Others in the cast include Alice Braga (City of God, Elysium) as Valeria Melo, a skilled driver with ties to the criminal underworld who becomes one of Creasy’s closest allies, while Scoot McNairy (A Complete Unknown, True Detective) appears as CIA field agent Henry Tappan, a calculating intelligence officer operating in Brazil. Bobby Cannavale (Scarpetta, Boardwalk Empire) guest stars as Paul Rayburn, a former Special Forces soldier whose sharp instincts and paternal charm hide a deep familiarity with violence.
Filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) directs the first two episodes of the seven-episode season, helping set the tone for what promises to be a gritty, character-driven, action-packed thriller where one man tries to escape the flames of his past, only to have the fire find him wherever he goes.
Man on Fire premieres Thursday, April 30th on Netflix.
📺 “Bait” Trailer: Riz Ahmed Plays a Struggling Actor Suddenly in the Running to Become the Next James Bond in Amazon’s New Comedy Series — Premiering Wed, March 25th on Prime Video
For any actor, getting the chance to audition for a dream role means everything. But what if that audition was for James Bond? And what if word got out that you were in the running? It might be life-changing… but it would also place enormous pressure on your shoulders, along with a wave of backlash before you even know whether you got the part or not.
That’s the type of predicament facing Riz Ahmed in Bait, a new Amazon comedy series that turns one actor’s career-defining opportunity into four days of escalating chaos. It’s a meta comedy examining the pressures of instant fame, immediate fan expectations, and the relentless noise that surrounds a role as iconic as James Bond—a once-in-a-lifetime part where everyone in the world suddenly has an opinion.
Ahmed created the series and also stars as Shah Latif, a struggling British-Pakistani actor whose long-awaited audition suddenly places him on the shortlist to become the next James Bond. While that kind of opportunity might sound like a dream come true, the pressure quickly begins to mount, turning Shah’s life upside down. Over the course of four increasingly wild days, his world starts to spiral as family, friends, and even his ex-lover weigh in on whether he’s truly the right man for the iconic role. And as anyone with a loud, opinionated family knows, the people rooting for you can sometimes be the biggest source of stress.
Joining Ahmed in this meta satire is a strong ensemble of South Asian actors and comedians, including Guz Khan, Sheeba Chaddha, Sajid Hasan, Aasiya Shah, Weruche Opia, and Ritu Arya. Meanwhile, Rafe Spall co-stars as Ahmed’s agent, working overtime to secure the coveted role for his client.
Ben Karlin serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Ahmed, who also contributes as a writer on the six-episode series. Filmmakers Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) and Tom George (HBO’s The Franchise) split directing duties, each helming three episodes.
All six episodes of Bait will debut Wednesday, March 25, streaming worldwide exclusively on Prime Video.
📺 “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” Trailer: Elle Fanning Plays a Broke New Mom Juggling Bills, Pride, and a Very Unconventional Family in David E. Kelley’s New Dramedy Series — Premiering Wed, April 15th on Apple TV
Everybody’s got a side hustle. Some are just a little more complicated than others. But in the case of Elle Fanning’s new series, that side hustle falls somewhere between basic survival and a few uncomfortable compromises.
Based on Rufi Thorpe’s bestselling novel and created by multi-Emmy winner David E. Kelley, Margo’s Got Money Troubles is not just a funny title but a messy journey of a young woman suddenly thrown into adulthood faster than she ever expected.
Elle Fanning, who is currently enjoying her first Oscar nomination for her supporting turn in Sentimental Value, takes on the role of Margo, whose carefully imagined future is quickly derailed by an unplanned pregnancy. With bills stacking up and opportunities running thin, she’s forced to confront the realities of independence as a new mother who isn’t exactly sure what she’s doing yet.
Family doesn’t necessarily make things easier. Margo is the daughter of an ex-Hooters waitress played by Michelle Pfeiffer and a former professional wrestler played by Nick Offerman, two parents who bring their own chaotic energy into her orbit. But when financial pressure begins to mount like never before, Margo must decide how far she’s willing to bend her ideals just to stay afloat. Eventually, she discovers the surprising sense of liberation and financial stability that comes with online cam modeling.
The problem is, it’s not exactly a profession her parents ever imagined for her, nor one widely accepted by the greater public. But in a world where making ends meet keeps getting harder, becoming a successful cam model can start to feel like a surprisingly practical option for a young mother.
Besides Fanning, Pfeiffer, and Offerman, the series boasts an impressive ensemble of heavy hitters, including Nicole Kidman, Marcia Gay Harden, and Greg Kinnear, along with Michael Angarano, Rico Nasty, and Lindsey Normington.
With David E. Kelley serving as showrunner and writer while also executive producing alongside Elle Fanning and her sister Dakota Fanning, with Kidman and Pfeiffer also on board as executive producers, the series has BAFTA and Emmy winner Dearbhla Walsh (Bad Sisters) directing the pilot episode, with acclaimed TV helmer Kate Herron (Loki, Sex Education) directing additional episodes.
Part heartfelt comedy and part messy coming-of-age story, Margo’s Got Money Troubles follows a young single mother discovering just how far she’s willing to go to support her child... even if it means choosing a path she never imagined for herself.
The series premieres Wednesday, April 15th on Apple TV.
