“The Unholy Trinity” Trailer: Gold, Guns, and Double-Crosses in This Wild West Showdown with Samuel L. Jackson and Pierce Brosnan — In Theaters June 13th
Welcome to the old West, where gold is every man’s dream, and blood is the price they must pay to claim it. This was a period in America known for its unbridled violence and lawlessness, where no one was trusted and no one was safe. But if you think the Wild West couldn’t get any wilder … well, here come Samuel L. Jackson and Pierce Brosnan to stir up some gunslinging mayhem in a showdown that’ll make history itself tremble.
The Unholy Trinity is a new western shoot-’em-up thriller packed with more twists and double-crosses than a rattlesnake in a barrel of dynamite. And Jackson and Brosnan are here to ratchet up the tension before everything goes up in flames.
This indie western stars newcomer Brandon Lessard as Henry, a young Montana man in the 1870s who arrives in the lawless town of Trinity, determined to right the wrongs of his not-so-upstanding father’s unjust execution. Believing his father was hung for his gold, Henry sets out to claim his father’s fortune.
Standing in Henry’s way, however, is a dubious bandit named St. Christopher (Jackson), who was not only his father’s former partner in crime but now runs with Trinity’s local gold-thieving hoodlums. As Henry faces a potential battle over his father’s stockpile of stolen gold, he’s backed by Trinity’s new sheriff, Gabriel Dove (Brosnan), who is determined to restore order to his town. Now, Henry must choose between two paths: one leads to lawfulness, the other to villainy.
But as Jackson’s St. Christopher declares in the film’s official trailer: “Man don't know what he is ‘til his back’s against the wall.”
Directed by Australian filmmaker Richard Gray (Murder at Yellowstone City, Robert the Bruce), the film features a solid supporting cast that includes David Arquette (Scream franchise), Ethan Peck (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds), Tim Daly (Wings), Q’orianka Kilcher (The New World), Katrina Bowden (30 Rock), and featuring the acting debut of Dylan Brosnan, Pierce’s son.
Penned by Lee Zachariah, The Unholy Trinity hits theaters June 13th.
“Fear Street: Prom Queen” Trailer: A Masked Killer Crashes Shadyside High’s 1988 Prom in This Fourth R. L. Stine Installment Starring India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Ariana Greenblatt, Chris Klein, and Lili Taylor – Premieres on Netflix May 23rd
For any high schooler looking to claim the coveted crown of Prom Queen, it might seem as easy as putting on a smile to win the hearts of the student body. But for the kids at Shadyside High, becoming Prom Queen comes with its rewards as well as its dangerous consequences.
In this new fourth installment of Netflix’s Fear Street film series, Fear Street: Prom Queen once again tackles the slasher genre, this time with a 1988 twist. It seems Shadyside High’s class of 1988 is preparing for the big prom dance. But as a group of popular young ladies vie for the ultimate crown, the gala is derailed by the sudden emergence of a masked slasher, who is looking to cut the competition down to size... literally!
Based on Goosebumps creator R. L. Stine’s popular young adult horror book series of the same name, Fear Street: Prom Queen follows the release of Fear Street: 1994, Fear Street: 1978, and Fear Street: 1666. This three-film horror trilogy, which dropped just weeks apart in July of 2021, was a rare and somewhat risky release for Netflix that mostly paid off, earning enough views to warrant this new fourth chapter.
And while filmmaker Leigh Janiak took on the directing duties of the original Fear Street trilogy, Prom Queen hails from indie horror director Matt Palmer (Calibre), who also co-wrote the screenplay with his writing partner Donald McLeary.
Playing the would-be Prom victims are India Fowler (Showtime’s The Agency), Suzanna Son (Red Rocket), Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie), Fina Strazza (Amazon’s Paper Girls), Ella Rubin (Netflix’s The Chair), and David Iacono (Amazon’s The Summer I Turned Pretty), with Chris Klein, Lili Taylor, and Katherine Waterston portraying some of the adults, including members of the school faculty.
Fear Street: Prom Queen will be cutting into Netflix’s algorithm starting on May 23rd.
“Paradise Records” Trailer: Rapper Logic Makes His Film Debut, Writing, Directing, and Starring as a Record Store Owner in This Kevin Smith-Produced Slacker Comedy – World Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival June 6th
Wait a minute! Did the rapper Logic just make a movie about hanging out in a rinky-dink used record store? Well, yes he did. And it’s coming to the Tribeca Film Festival next month for its world premiere.
The Grammy-nominated rapper not only makes his feature film debut as the writer-director-star of Paradise Records, but also offers a throwback to 1990s and early 2000s hangout slacker comedies in the vein of Friday, Empire Records, and Clerks. In fact, filmmaker Kevin Smith serves as one of the film’s executive producers, as well as the guy who encouraged Logic to make an independently produced film on his own, free from the interference of movie executives or the financial backing of a big studio. And in many ways, Paradise Records feels like a spiritual cousin to Kevin Smith’s Clerks and Mallrats... for better or for worse.
And going by the film’s first official red band trailer, the humor definitely feels like a throwback to ‘90s comedies, with an emphasis on conversational dialogue, packed with plenty of irreverent cultural references and offbeat exchanges. In a surprise move, Kevin Smith, along with his executive producing duties and cameoing with Jason Mewes as their characters Jay and Silent Bob, also worked as the main editor on the film. So, in some sense, this might be the closest thing to a View Askew film without falling under Smith’s View Askewniverse. But then again, it might just be in the same orbit... again, for better or for worse.
In Paradise Records, Logic plays Cooper, a mild-mannered record store owner trying to keep his head above water as he faces the threat of foreclosure from his bank. Set over the course of one hectic day at his store, Cooper finds himself scrounging for money while having to deal with pesky customers, frustrating employees, annoying family members, and a surprise robbery. And the only thing keeping him going through this awful day is a lot of weed and some classic tunes.
Featuring a slew of appearances from Juicy J, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ron Perlman, Diedrich Bader, Oliver Tree, Tony Revolori, Bobby Lee, Phil LaMarr, Martin Starr, Kevin Corrigan, and Nolan North, Paradise Records will debut at Tribeca on June 6th. No word yet on when the film will be released officially.
“Wick is Pain” Trailer: Dive Into the Stunt-Fueled Legacy of John Wick in This Behind-the-Scenes Feature-length Documentary — Available VOD/Digital May 9th
Just when you thought there wasn’t anything left to squeeze from the John Wick franchise, this little beauty pops out… Wick is Pain! It’s a feature-length making-of documentary diving deep into the production of the John Wick films, with a sharp focus on the sensational stunts and spectacular fight scenes that made the franchise so entertaining and iconic.
And to be honest, the work that went into crafting these adrenaline-pumping stunts and fights was so elaborate and detailed that it forced audiences to sit up and take notice. The entire industry is now paying respects to stunt performers everywhere, finally recognizing their contributions to cinema as they’ve become intricately woven into the filmmaking process. One could even argue that the John Wick films are a major reason the Academy Awards will introduce a new stunt Oscar category starting in 2027.
Directed by editor Jeffrey Doe, Wick is Pain features Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski as they sit down to discuss the history of the John Wick franchise, including the troubled production of the first film, which faced a series of major setbacks that nearly derailed everything. In fact, one of our favorite trivia facts about the original John Wick (which we’re sure will be covered in the doc) is that actress Eva Longoria was instrumental in saving the production, stepping in at the last minute to help with financial woes. So, just imagine a world without John Wick. And we have Eva Longoria to thank for giving Keanu Reeves another iconic franchise we all love.
Wick is Pain (which frankly feels like a behind-the-scenes featurette that would belong in the supplements section of a Blu-ray or DVD… but, sadly, who has discs these days?) will be available on VOD/Digital starting May 9th.
“Hot Milk” Trailer: Emma Mackey Stars as a Fed-up Caregiver Plotting to Escape Her Domineering Wheelchair-Bound Mother (Fiona Shaw) in This British Thriller with Vicky Krieps – In Theaters June 27th
Hey! Any Sex Education fans out there? To clarify, the Netflix show. Not the health class we all tried to avoid in high school. Well, anyone who considers themselves a true fan of Sex Education already knows Emma Mackey is a legit star, just waiting to break out. In fact, that show has already been the springboard for a number of rising British talents who are making waves right now in Hollywood. (See: Aimee Lou Wood in White Lotus: Season 3, Ncuti Gatwa in Doctor Who, and Connor Swindells in Rogue Heroes).
And now, it’s Mackey’s turn to make some waves. With recent reports announcing that Mackey will be playing the White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia fantasy novels, the Sex Education star has also lined up a busy 2025 slate. First up is the new British thriller Hot Milk. Based on Deborah Levy’s novel, Mackey taps into her silently savage side in this one.
Here, Mackey plays Sofia, an extremely frustrated and exhausted daughter of a clinically disabled, wheelchair-bound woman, Rose, played by esteemed British actress Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve, Andor). For most of her adult life, Sofia has been in charge of her mother’s well-being, constantly at her beck and call. During a vacation on the Spanish coast for a health retreat, Sofia’s quiet resentment and animosity toward her ailing, yet domineering mother boil to the point of no return.
Things become even more complicated when Sofia meets and falls for a free-spirited older woman (Vicky Krieps from Phantom Thread) who is traveling through Spain for the summer. Now, for the first time in her life, Sofia begins contemplating a life—a better life—without her mother to worry about. Now, the real question is: how to get rid of her? Perhaps leave her mother in the middle of the road for an oncoming truck to do its business? Yikes!
Directed by acclaimed British writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz (She Said, Colette), who makes her directorial debut, and costarring Vincent Perez and Yann Gael, Hot Milk is opening in theaters June 27th.
Meanwhile, Mackey is expected to also star in two other movies this year, including in the lead role of James L. Brooks’s latest Ella McCay (out in Dec.) and Julia Ducournau’s new French body horror film Alpha (debuting in Cannes in May).
“The Surrender” Trailer: Colby Minifie Faces Dark Forces in This Supernatural Horror About a Family’s Desperate Attempt to Bring a Loved One Back – Streaming on Shudder May 23rd
Quick question: name an actress working today who always delivers the goods and needs more attention? That’s easy... Colby Minifie!
No matter what role she tackles, whether as the terrifying leader Virginia in Fear the Walking Dead or the conniving acting Vought CEO Ashley Barrett in The Boys, Minifie chews up the scenery with ease, adding a deliciously complex intensity to whatever she’s in.
She also has the most expressive eyes that can see right through people or tell an entire story without saying a word. Minifie puts those qualities to good use in this new horror thriller, The Surrender, where you better believe her eyes are constantly wide with both sheer confusion and terror.
In the film, Minifie plays Megan, who returns home to help out during the final moments of her ailing father’s last days. While balancing her time caring for her grieving mother (played by Grey’s Anatomy alum Kate Burton) and ensuring her father passes peacefully, Megan soon finds herself confronted with something she had no part in or was ever told about: her mother has hired a stranger to come to the house and perform a satanic ritual to bring Megan’s father back from the dead. Thus begins a journey into the deepest corners of the supernatural, where Megan and her mother face dark forces that could unravel everything they hold dear.
Written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Julia Max, The Surrender is slated to premiere on the horror streaming platform Shudder starting May 23rd. Bring some popcorn … and maybe a blanket to hide under.
“Diablo” Trailer: Scott Adkins Takes on a Colombian Cartel in This Action-Packed Thriller – In Theaters and On VOD/Digital June 13th
Okay, if we were still living in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, English martial artist Scott Adkins would be ranked as one of the best action stars of our time. Perhaps not better than Arnold and Stallone, but definitely miles ahead of Van Damme and Seagal. But, sadly, we’re not living in the ‘80s, so Scott Adkins is perhaps best known for putting on a fat suit to fight John Wick as Killa Harkan in Chapter 4, or playing one of the villains in Doctor Strange, or portraying a CIA assassin trying to kill Jason Bourne in The Bourne Ultimatum. Not quite the same. But at least someone is holding up the action star mantle. And for that, we salute you, Scott Adkins, for a job well done.
Here, Adkins is back with another rough-and-tumble action thriller, Diablo. This time, he’s playing a guy with incredible fighting skills (well, okay, that’s pretty much always the case) who takes on an entire Colombian cartel after kidnapping the young daughter of a notorious South American kingpin.
So, why would he do such a thing? Well, apparently, he was a close friend of the girl’s now-dead mother. He had vowed to rescue the girl from the cartel, believing that her ruthless father was somehow responsible for her mother’s death. So, now he’s roaming the streets of Colombia, kicking ass and taking names. And he’s willing to risk everything to make sure this little girl has a life free from her father's criminal world.
Diablo is directed by Chilean filmmaker Ernesto Díaz Espinoza, best known for his 2007 action-driven Chilean superhero thriller Mirageman. Since then, Espinoza has been making action exploitation thrillers in Chile.
Co-starring Marko Zaror, Alana De La Rossa, and Diana Hoyos, Diablo is coming to theaters and on VOD/Digital on June 13th.
“Sally” Trailer: New Documentary Chronicles the Groundbreaking Life of Astronaut Sally Ride, the First Woman in Space – Streaming June 16th on National Geographic/Disney+
Now with all this talk about who can rightfully be labeled as a legit astronaut, there's no question about Sally Ride's credentials. She was the real deal, and she had the right stuff. Sorry, Katy Perry and Gayle King, but you two should be ashamed to say you belong in the same league with Sally Ride. Now let’s all get to what real female astronauts are all about, as Sally Ride’s astonishing life story is chronicled in this new documentary for National Geographic.
The doc, directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Cristina Costantini (Science Fair, Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado), explores not only Sally Ride's groundbreaking voyage into becoming the first woman to travel into space, but also the early days of the space program when NASA was opening its doors for women to join. As one might expect, skepticism, misogyny, and sexism rear their ugly head during Sally’s journey, but she pushed forward, paving the way for future generations of women in space. Now, sadly, it seems anyone can take credit if you have enough money to pay Bezos for a ride.
Sally will blast off on Monday, June 16th, streaming on National Geographic and Disney+.
