★ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” New ‘Fantastivision’ Trailer: Marvel Goes Full Retro with This 1960s-Inspired Promo — In Theaters Everywhere July 25th
With the new Superman movie currently making noise at the box office this weekend, it’s now Marvel’s turn to shine. Batter’s up! Stepping to the plate is The Fantastic Four: First Steps! Now, the jury is out on whether the film will knock it out of the park or end up striking out—but it won’t be from a lack of trying. Marvel has shifted their promotional train into high gear, and this is just an example of that.
It’s a retro-stylized promo, complete with an old-fashioned ‘60s aesthetic. The trailer feels like it came straight out of a General Electric corporate video. But instead of selling you home appliances, they're selling the birth of Marvel’s First Family. Presented in “Fantastivision,” the film offers plenty of action, and a little romance for good measure. But most importantly, you can expect at the center a super family unit bound by love, loyalty, and the occasional cosmic mishap.
Directed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman, and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the Fab Four, with Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal, the Silver Surfer, and Ralph Ineson as the voice of Galactus, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is opening in theaters near you next week on July 25th.
So, grab your popcorn, your retro jumpsuit, and maybe a copy of Popular Science... ‘cause this is one Marvel ride where the future meets the past... and the past is pretty fantastic.
★ “Descendent” Trailer: Ross Marquand Faces Paranoia and Fears of Fatherhood in This Psychological Sci-Fi Thriller from the Producers of The Endless — In Theaters August 8th
You might know actor Ross Marquand as the always-reliable, one-handed zombie slayer Aaron from the long-running horror series The Walking Dead. Or perhaps you’ve stumbled across one of the countless viral videos showcasing his remarkable celebrity impersonations (our favorite? His spot-on John C. Reilly). Or maybe you recognize Marquand’s distinctive voice from his extensive animation work, including X-Men '97 (as Professor X and Doctor Doom) and Invincible (as both Immortal and Robot).
Wherever you know him from, you probably already know that Marquand adds something special to every project he touches. He might not be a big name, but he certainly deserves to be. So, if you’re already on Team Marquand, you’ll be happy to know he’s finally getting a shot to lead a feature film. And it’s one that shows off his more dramatic chops, as Marquand takes on the role of a soon-to-be father who finds himself overwhelmed by the anxiety of having a baby on the way... alongside a strange encounter that he believes might have been contact with an extraterrestrial entity.
In the upcoming psychological thriller Descendent, Marquand stars as Sean Bruner, a loving husband to his newly pregnant wife (played by Mayans M.C. actress Sarah Bolger). While repairing an outdoor light on the roof of their house, Sean spots something strange in the sky. For a moment, he freezes—perhaps in a trance—from a beam of light before suddenly falling and injuring himself. He later wakes up in a hospital bed, dazed and disoriented. But something feels... off.
As the days go by, Sean begins to suspect that he may have been abducted by aliens. Still, the idea seems too unbelievable to say out loud... too crazy to admit, even to himself.
Sean soon descends into a spiral of paranoia. With the birth of his baby looming, he finds himself in a whirlwind of sleepless nights, disturbing visions, and an unshakable feeling that something is watching him... something not of this world.
Is it all in his head—perhaps a manifestation of his anxiety about becoming a new father? Or are aliens coming after his unborn child? And if so, how is he going to protect his family from a threat no one else believes is real?
Directed by Peter Cilella and produced by horror filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (The Endless, Spring, Synchronic), Descendent will be arriving in theaters August 8th.
★ “I Swear” Trailer: Robert Aramayo Stars as a Scottish Teen Battling Tourette’s and Stigma in This New British Coming-of-Age Dramedy — Arriving in U.K. Cinemas on October 10th
Growing up in 1980s Britain with Tourette’s wasn’t easy... especially when no one around you knew what it was. But for John Davidson, it became the fight that would shape his life, his voice, and ultimately his strength.
Based on the life story of a Scottish 16-year-old named John Davidson—who, in the late ‘80s, was profiled in a BBC documentary series for having the then-unknown neurodevelopmental disorder Tourette syndrome, which caused him to suffer from uncontrollable physical tics and random profanity-laced outbursts—the upcoming British film appears to be a funny, raw, and deeply heartfelt look at one young man’s journey through misunderstanding, stigma, and self-acceptance.
Robert Aramayo, who played young Eddard Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones and currently stars as Elrond in Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, trades in medieval gear for an ‘80s tracksuit as he takes on the role of John Davidson, who at 15 was diagnosed with a condition few had even heard of. While John navigates a minefield of adolescence, prejudice, and personal setbacks with an unwavering sense of humor and resilience, he searches for his place in a world that is both harsh and unexpectedly helpful.
Joining Aramayo in the cast are powerhouse British talents including Maxine Peake (FX’s Say Nothing), Shirley Henderson (Netflix’s Dept. Q), and Peter Mullan (Netflix’s Ozark) in this moving underdog story from BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Kirk Jones (Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee).
Equal parts coming-of-age and social drama, I Swear aims to be an uplifting ode to the power of being unapologetically yourself, proving once again that British cinema reigns supreme when it comes to telling deeply personal and powerfully moving dramedies of outcasts who refuse to be silent (see: My Left Foot, Billy Elliot, The Full Monty).
I Swear is set to open in the U.K. on October 10th. As of yet, there’s no official U.S. release date.
★ “The Occupant” Trailer: Ella Balinska Navigates Isolation, Hallucination, and a Mysterious Voice in This Sci-Fi-tinged Survival Thriller — Out on VOD September 1st
When the ice closes in and the mind starts to crack, who do you trust: the voice in your ear... or your own unraveling thoughts?
In this chilling survival thriller, British actress Ella Balinska (of the 2019 Charlie's Angels remake) plays Abby, a driven geologist who accepts a perilous mining gig in the remote, snow-blasted mountains of Northern Georgia to pay for her sister’s cancer treatment. But when her helicopter crashes in the middle of nowhere, Abby is left injured, isolated, and freezing. Her only connection to the outside world? A static-laced radio with the voice of a mysterious man named John (Deadpool’s Rob Delaney) on the other end, who says he can guide her to safety.
Helpful, comforting, and eerily attuned to her every fear, John becomes her lifeline... until Abby starts to wonder if she’s talking to a savior or a sinister hallucination. With reality slipping and time running out, she must navigate the harsh terrain and even harsher truths about what’s really happening out there. Is John real? Is he a figure in her own mind? Or is he simply leading her into a psychological trap where dreams and reality are indistinguishable?
Directed by Hugo Keijzer in his feature debut, The Occupant blends survival drama with psychological sci-fi, turning the frostbitten wilderness into a mind maze of paranoia, desperation, and possible extraterrestrial contact. Also starring Stuart Graham, Vanessa Ifediora, and Armin Karima, the film made waves at this year’s SXSW London.
The Occupant is set to hit VOD on September 1st.
★ “What We Hide” Trailer: McKenna Grace and Jojo Regina Play Sisters Keeping a Dark Secret in This New Southern Thriller About the Fallout of the Opioid Crisis — Out on VOD August 29th
With a nation racked by the opioid crisis, sadly, overdose incidents have become a common occurrence these days. But as these tragic statistics continue to rise, so do the unexpected consequences—such as the emergence of newly orphaned children, kids left behind by parents lost to addiction, now forced to navigate a world without stability, support, or even answers.
What We Hide is a new thriller that tackles head-on the issue of innocent children directly affected by the opioid crisis. It asks the question: how far would you go to keep your family together in the aftermath of a devastating tragedy?
In this story, McKenna Grace, who played Phoebe Spengler in the Ghostbusters films Frozen Empire and Afterlife, takes the lead as Spider, a young Southern teen desperate to protect her younger sister, Jessie, after their mother tragically dies from a drug overdose in their home.
Fearing the government will have no choice but to split them apart, she convinces Jessie (Jojo Regina) to pretend like nothing has happened. They even go so far as to hide the body and keep the doors of the house locked at all times. But secrets this big don’t stay buried for long. And the girls will soon discover just how dangerous silence can be.
As suspicions from local authorities grow and their mother’s dangerous drug dealer (played by Stranger Things actor Dacre Montgomery) circles closer, the girls must outsmart a system that seems designed to tear them apart. With every lie and cover-up, the stakes rise... and so does the risk of losing each other... forever.
Co-starring Grey's Anatomy actor Jesse Williams as a local sheriff, with Malia Baker rounding out the cast, this gritty, emotional thriller hails from writer-director Dan Kay.
What We Hide appears to be a tense, heart-wrenching story about the unbreakable bond of sisterhood—and the cost of keeping the truth buried. The film will be made available on VOD and Digital starting August 29th.
