Trailer Blitz: The Baltimorons, The Senior, Giant, Sketch, Primitive War, The History of Sound and More
Time to catch up on this week's movie trailers! Here's a list of films coming to screens soon!
★ “The Baltimorons” Trailer: Michael Strassner and Liz Larsen Find Love, Laughter, and Loose Teeth in Jay Duplass’s Offbeat Holiday Rom-Com — In Theaters September 5th
Nothing says a heartwarming meet-cute like some emergency dental work on Christmas Eve. But indie filmmaker Jay Duplass—who hasn’t directed a feature in over a decade, mainly because he’s been busy acting in such TV shows as Transparent, Industry, and most recently Dying for Sex—returns to the director’s seat with what looks like a heartfelt rom-com about two unlikely souls who turn out to be exactly what the other needed, even if they didn’t know it yet.
In the upcoming indie The Baltimorons, Baltimore-born comic actor Michael Strassner (who also co-wrote the script with Jay Duplass) plays Cliff, a newly sober stand-up comic who accidentally chips one of his front teeth on Christmas Eve. Desperate for a quick fix, Cliff ends up knocking on the door of a local dentist’s office for some emergency patch-up work.
Character actress Liz Larsen (Law & Order) stars as Didi, a no-nonsense dentist who agrees to help out. But when Cliff overhears Didi on a phone call with her daughter, he gets the sense that Didi prefers to stay home for Christmas—especially now that her ex-husband has gotten remarried and everyone is off celebrating his wedding reception.
A grateful Cliff isn’t one to leave someone alone on the holidays, so he invites Didi to join him for dinner... and soon the two become unlikely companions as they spend Christmas Eve together. The night takes an unexpected turn when Cliff suggests they crash Didi's ex-husband’s wedding party.
What started as a toothless mishap becomes what might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship... and just maybe, a second chance at love and romance—bloody tooth and all.
Also starring Olivia Luccardi, The Baltimorons just might be that feel-good romantic comedy of the year, featuring a couple of lovable misfits who stumble into each other’s lives at just the right moment.
The film arrives in limited theaters on September 5th, before expanding nationwide on September 12th.
★ “The Senior” Trailer: Michael Chiklis Suits Up for One Last Shot in Rod Lurie’s True-Story College Football Comeback Drama — Hitting Theaters September 19th
If you ever thought sports films are only for the young, as if they exist solely to inspire the young to chase their dreams while they still can—well, think again! Because sometimes, the most inspiring sports stories are the ones about the comeback... when someone old enough to be your dad (or maybe your granddad) sets out to prove the naysayers wrong and show that the love of the game never dies, no matter how many years have passed or how many people say it's too late.
In the upcoming football drama The Senior, Michael Chiklis (The Shield, Fantastic Four) stars as Mike Flynt, a 59-year-old family man who returns to his alma mater to see if he can make the college football team nearly four decades after being kicked out for fighting. While lacing up for one last shot at redemption, Mike sets out to prove that it’s never too late to rewrite your own ending—despite the bruises, the broken bones, and the lingering doubts.
Directed by Rod Lurie (The Contender, Resurrecting the Champ, Straw Dogs) and also starring Mary Stuart Masterson, Rob Corddry, and Brandon Flynn, the film is based on the remarkable true story of Mike Flynt, who, in 2007 at the age of 59, returned to play Division III college football, despite being eight years older than his head coach.
The Senior is slated to open in theaters on September 19th. Root for the underdog!
★ “Giant” Trailer: Amir El-Masry Steps Into the Ring as Boxer Prince Naseem Hamed in this Sylvester Stallone-Produced British True-Story Boxing Drama with Pierce Brosnan — Coming Soon
If Rocky taught us anything, it’s that you should never count out the underdogs... especially if they have a wicked left hook.
The British boxing drama Giant tells the untold true story of British-Yemeni boxing legend Prince Naseem Hamed. Before he was “The Prince,” he was just a kid with a dream. And lucky for him, he had a trainer who believed in him before he even believed in himself.
Executive produced by Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone, the upcoming drama stars Amir El-Masry (The Night Manager, The Crown, SAS: Rogue Heroes) as Prince “Naz” Hamed, the flashy, fearless boxer who broke the mold.
James Bond icon Pierce Brosnan plays Brendan Ingle, his tough-love trainer who guided and mentored him from boyhood to manhood, helping Naz perfect his electric showmanship as he danced and punched his way to the top in the 1990s.
Written and directed by Rowan Athale (Wasteland, Strange But True), Giant carries on the proud tradition of underdog boxing dramas, reminding us that champions don’t come in the same packages—sometimes, they come from the most unexpected places.
The film will be coming soon.
★ “Sketch” Final Trailer: Tony Hale Battles Crayon-Created Monsters in Seth Worley’s Goofy Creature Comedy — In Theaters August 6th
Meet Dave! A kid-created, googly-eyed blue monster that magically comes alive. He would be cute—if it wasn’t for the fact that Dave will likely kill you if you get too close. Yikes!
When imagination goes off the page... and straight for your throat, that’s where you’ll find this new wild fantasy comedy, Sketch. It's a kid-infused, horror-tinged romp where The Veep’s Tony Hale stars as a dad in over his head when his daughter’s innocent monster doodles turn disturbingly real.
Ten-year-old prodigy (Bianca Bell) just wanted to draw her feelings. So, she didn’t mean to unleash a tentacled terror with a taste for mayhem. Now it's up to her family to figure out a way to stop these crayon-colored monsters from destroying their town.
Directed by Seth Worley and co-starring D’Arcy Carden, this twisted tale of parenting panic and monster mayhem blends Goosebumps with Godzilla-sized chaos.
Sketch is coming to theaters August 6th. Pack some snacks for the kids. But maybe leave the markers at home.
★ “Primitive War” Trailer: Ryan Kwanten, Tricia Helfer and Jeremy Piven Battle Dinosaurs in This Vietnam War Creature Feature — Hitting Theaters August 21st via Fathom
Imagine Jurassic Park meets Apocalypse Now... but with less prestige and more midnight madness. Think of the kind of movie you’d stumble upon while flipping through Syfy at 1:00 a.m.—yet you’d totally keep watching. That’s the pulpy energy coming off Primitive War, a dino-packed Vietnam War throwback that asks a simple question: what if battle-hardened soldiers had to fight the most primal predators in history?
Set in 1968, Primitive War follows Vulture Squad, a recon unit sent deep into the jungle to locate a missing Green Beret platoon. But instead of enemy troops, they find themselves face-to-snout with prehistoric nightmares straight out of the Cretaceous period. Picture The Lost World… if it came strapped with M16s.
Starring Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), and Jeremy Piven (Entourage), the film is based on the cult novel by Ethan Pettus and directed by Luke Sparke (Occupation). It's a wild blend of jungle warfare, creature feature mayhem, and B-movie bluster. This ain’t Jurassic Park... it’s more like Apocalypse Rex!
Primitive War stomps into theaters August 21st via Fathom Entertainment.
★ “The History of Sound” Trailer: Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor Share a Forbidden Love in Oliver Hermanus’s Sweeping Post-WWI Romance — In U.S. Theaters September 12th Via Mubi
With his critically acclaimed 2019 drama Moffie, South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus used the stark and gritty backdrop of the apartheid-era South African military in Angola and Namibia during the early 1980s to tell the riveting story of a closeted gay soldier navigating the hypermasculinity of boot camp and his first deployment.
Hermanus is back with another period drama, continuing to explore themes of forbidden gay love, longing, and loss. But this time, the setting is America’s early 1900s, an era of transition, progressive reforms and repressed desire. And this time, Hermanus has attracted two of the most exciting rising actors working today for the leads: Gladiator II’s Paul Mescal and Challengers’ Josh O'Connor.
In the film, Mescal and O’Connor star as Lionel and David, two young men whose bond begins at the Boston Music Conservatory in 1917 and deepens on a post-war journey to preserve the voices of a fading generation. As they travel rural Maine recording folk songs, their own love story becomes a tender echo of the country’s aching soul.
Based on Ben Shattuck’s acclaimed short story of the same name—and adapted for the screen by Shattuck himself—The History of Sound is shaping up to be a sweeping romantic drama about music, memory, and human connection, set against the changing backdrop of early 20th-century America in the aftermath of World War I.
The film lands in U.S. theaters September 12th (and in Canada September 19th) via MUBI.
