🎥 “Mercy” Trailer: Chris Pratt Fights for His Life Against an A.I. Judge (Rebecca Ferguson) in Timur Bekmambetov’s Near-Future Sci-Fi Thriller — In Theaters January 23rd
Strapped down to a chair, a jittery and desperate Chris Pratt has 90 minutes to not only hold your attention but also prove that a judicial A.I. system is the last thing humanity needs in its future.
In Mercy, the upcoming near-future sci-fi thriller, Pratt stars as a once-respected detective accused of murdering his wife. Set in a not-too-distant future where a new judicial program has been launched—one that combines the power of judge, jury, and executioner—technology no longer serves justice… it decides it.
Pratt’s character is forced to defend himself before a highly advanced A.I.-powered judge (played by Rebecca Ferguson, appearing through a monitor screen). With only 90 minutes to prove his innocence, he must build a winning case using every piece of available security and drone footage, reconstructing his wife’s final moments. The question is whether he can identify the real killer in time before the “judge” delivers her final verdict. The probability of his innocence, however, doesn’t look so promising.
Directed by Russian-born action filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Profile), the film appears to be a ticking-clock thriller with a sci-fi bent, charging headfirst into questions of law, crime, and technology—and how those elements can become a lethal combination if placed in the wrong control.
With Kali Reis, Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, and Kylie Rogers rounding out the cast, Mercy will be hitting theaters everywhere on January 23rd.
🎥 “Hamnet” New Trailer: Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal Star in Chloé Zhao’s Haunting Portrait of Shakespeare’s Greatest Loss — In Theaters November 27th
After the MCU misfire that was Eternals, there’s been a question mark hanging over the head of filmmaker Chloé Zhao. Despite winning an Oscar for Nomadland, Zhao caught plenty of heat for delivering one of Marvel’s first major creative missteps—a visually ambitious but tonally uneven superhero epic that left audiences divided, if not downright disappointed.
But anyone who’s had a career in Hollywood would attest—when there are downs, there are also ups. It’s just a matter of sticking around long enough to catch the next one. And that seems to be exactly what’s happened for Zhao, who has come roaring back with a new film that’s been generating serious Oscar buzz—particularly for Jessie Buckley, who at this point might just be a shoo-in for a nomination.
In Hamnet, Zhao’s sweeping, soul-stirring 16th-century drama dares to reimagine the life of William Shakespeare, the renowned Bard behind such masterpieces as Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, and countless others. Here, Gladiator II star Paul Mescal takes on the role of a young Shakespeare, while Jessie Buckley portrays his wife, Agnes.
The film is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel, which leans into the theory that Shakespeare’s inspiration to write Hamlet—often considered his magnum opus—came from the tragic death of his 11-year-old son, whose name was Hamnet. Said to be a meditation on love, grief, and the transcendent power of art, the film earned top honors at TIFF, winning the 2025 People’s Choice Award, with much of the Oscar chatter centering on Buckley’s emotionally charged performance as a resilient woman grappling with heartbreak and unimaginable loss.
Co-starring Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn, David Wilmot, Jacobi Jupe, and Noah Jupe, Hamnet is set to arrive in U.S. theaters on Thanksgiving, November 27th, before expanding nationwide throughout December.
🎥 “Father Mother Sister Brother” Trailer: Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch Brings Together Tom Waits, Adam Driver, and Mayim Bialik in a Wry Family Reunion Drama with Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps and Charlotte Rampling — Hitting Theaters December 24th via MUBI
Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (Stranger Than Paradise, Only Lovers Left Alive) has never met a misfit he didn’t love. But with his latest feature film, the indie mainstay turns his lens on several families of misfits, each stumbling their way through life with his trademark blend of deadpan humor and poetic melancholy.
Featuring an all-star ensemble including Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Sarah Greene, Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat, and Françoise Lebrun, Father Mother Sister Brother just might be Jarmusch at his most Jarmusch-y, as the New York auteur trades indie cool for something more achingly human and uncomfortably awkward. It’s an intimate portrait of several fractured families pulled back together by circumstance, regret, and the fragile hope of reconciliation.
Unfolding like a quiet symphony of bruised egos, traumatic family histories, and long-buried resentments, Jarmusch layers his minimalist touch with sly, dry humor as he aims to capture the push and pull of kinship in all its tender, bumbling glory.
Father Mother Sister Brother arrives in select U.S. theaters December 24th via MUBI—because nothing says “holiday spirit” quite like a Jarmusch family reunion gone beautifully off the rails.
🎥 “King Ivory” Trailer: James Badge Dale Leads a Dirty War on Drugs in John Swab’s Gritty Crime Thriller with Ben Foster, Graham Greene, and Melissa Leo — In Theaters November 14th
The 1990s might have been the apex for gritty cop movies, with Heat standing tall as the genre’s gold standard. But in recent years, we’ve seen the rise of a new wave of crime thrillers, with films like Den of Thieves and Triple 9 emerging as the next bullet-riddled evolution of the cops-and-robbers saga. Sadly, these movies don’t come close to matching Heat or its ’90s predecessors. Instead, they proudly wear their Heat influence on their sleeves, becoming what many now call Heat knockoffs, or the “discount aisle” version of Michael Mann’s masterpiece.
But it doesn’t mean these films aren’t highly entertaining—in an empty-calorie kind of way. Just don’t expect them to break any new ground or redefine the genre. They’re basically here to deliver the goods: bullets, bravado, and a whole lot of bad decisions. And, oh yeah... the line between cop and criminal? Awfully thin in these films.
With that in mind, go ahead and add King Ivory to the pile, as it takes the opioid crisis and cranks it up to deliver a gritty, hard-edged crime thriller where the cops are just as compromised, corrupt, and conflicted as the criminals they’re chasing.
In this case, it’s James Badge Dale (The Grey, The Departed, The Empty Man) who leads the film as Tulsa narcotics cop Layne West, a man waging war on fentanyl dealers while his own son slips under the drug’s deadly spell. His pursuit drags him through a tangled web of cartels, prison gangs, and family-run crime syndicates; each holding a piece of the poison pipeline known on the streets as “King Ivory.”
Written and directed by John Swab (Candy Land, Body Brokers), the film also features a stellar ensemble cast that includes Ben Foster, Michael Mando, Rory Cochrane, Ritchie Coster, Oscar-winner Melissa Leo, and the late, great Graham Greene in one of his final roles.
So, it might not be Heat or Traffic, but King Ivory looks to explore a multi-perspective view of how a small state like Oklahoma has become a hotbed for fentanyl trafficking. Now that just might be something worth watching for when it lands in theaters November 14th.
🎥 “Bugonia” New Trailer: Emma Stone Plays a Suspected Alien in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Darkly Comic Sci-Fi Satire with Jesse Plemons — In Theaters October 24th
Here’s a question we never thought we’d be pondering: is Emma Stone an alien sent to Earth to destroy humanity? Okay, grab those tinfoil hats, people... this one’s going to be a mind trip you won’t want to miss.
In this twisted satire, Bugonia—the latest darkly comic film from filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and frequent muse Emma Stone—two conspiracy-obsessed oddballs (Jesse Plemons and newcomer Aidan Delbis) kidnap Michelle Fuller (Stone), a powerful pharmaceutical CEO they’re convinced is an alien plotting Earth’s destruction. What begins as a delusional abduction quickly spirals into a warped interrogation of power, paranoia, and the fragile line between truth and madness.
Reuniting Lanthimos and Stone for their fourth consecutive collaboration—after The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness—the film promises more of their signature absurdity and darkly offbeat wit. It’s a conspiracy-laden chamber piece where the truth is both less—and far more—terrifying than it seems.
Adapted by The Menu co-writer Will Tracy, based on the 2003 South Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet!, Bugonia feels like a delirious cocktail of apocalyptic anxiety, eat-the-rich energy, and sci-fi surrealism. It also features a head-shaven Emma Stone, which might just be worth the price of admission alone.
Shot by longtime Lanthimos collaborator Robbie Ryan (so yes, it looks beautifully strange), and featuring supporting turns from comedian Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone, Bugonia is set to open in select theaters October 24th before expanding nationwide October 31st. Looks like Halloween just got a little more unearthly.
