"Together" Trailer: Dave Franco and Alison Brie Explore the Dark Side of Codependency in This New Horror Thriller
A seemingly perfect couple (Franco and Brie) finds themselves trapped in a terrifying bond that blurs the line between love and suffocation.
The idea of finding one’s soul mate, that two people are meant to be together forever, is a beautifully romantic but idealistic notion. Some might even say an unrealistic one. For two people to stay together, through thick and thin, it sometimes requires a high level of codependency. But what if "sticking together" becomes something even more literal? What if two soul mates find themselves bound by forces beyond their control, with no power but to remain as close as possible, blurring the line between intimacy and suffocation, love and confinement? Suddenly, all the lessons we learned from love songs and love stories are flipped on their head. What we once thought was the epitome of romance now feels more like a nightmare from hell. This is the theme of Together, an upcoming horror thriller that dives into the darker side of love and connection, and it’s bound to make this summer a whole lot more terrifying.
Actors Dave Franco and Alison Brie are a real-life married couple, and they’re bringing their natural chemistry to the screen in this new horror movie, where they portray a fictional couple who love each other but have reached a point of complacency in their relationship. Things are mildly content, but that special spark they once had is now gone. They should be happy. After all, they’re soul mates. And they have everything they could possibly want: a new home, good careers, and a seemingly perfect life. Yet, just beneath the surface, an eerie sense of uneasiness begins to grow between them. This tense malaise brings them together in more ways than they could have expected. Soon, they’ll learn what true codependency means, and it’s not just a feeling, but a terrifying new reality.
Together is a dark romantic horror thriller that takes the concept of “sticking together” to its most literal and terrifying extremes, exploring the visual concept of two codependent soul mates who start to morph into one. This psychedelic head-scratcher emerged as one of this year’s big highlights at Sundance. The film subsequently ignited a bidding war, eventually landing an astonishing $20 million distribution deal with Neon Films, the same studio behind horror hits like Longlegs, The Monkey, and Cuckoo.
For their performances, Franco and Brie earned strong accolades, as their roles seem to demand a high level of physicality. As the two characters gradually begin to unite, their codependency evolves first from a metaphysical connection, leading to plenty of mutually shared convulsions and spasms, and eventually to a more physical one.
Michael Shanks, an Australian-born filmmaker, makes his feature film debut as the writer-director of Together. Shanks previously directed the 2020 short film Rebooted, which tells the story of an outdated stop-motion animated skeleton monster struggling to find work in Hollywood. With Together, Shanks earned praise from critics during his Sundance debut, possibly positioning him as a new rising talent and someone to watch.
Together co-stars Damon Herriman (FX’s Justified) and is set to hit theaters on August 1st.
With the summer already packed with horror films, this one feels uniquely positioned to stand out from the rest. One would only need to look at the movie’s poster, clearly designed to set a tone ... a disturbing one at that.
