"The Woman in the Yard" New Trailer: Danielle Deadwyler Faces a Terrifying Shadowy Apparition in Blumhouse’s Latest Horror Thriller Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra
A grieving widow and her children are trapped in a nightmare when a mysterious figure appears outside their farmhouse in The Woman in the Yard.
With a name like Deadwyler, it was only a matter of time before she starred in her own horror movie—and now that time has come. Danielle Deadwyler, who has been absolutely killing it lately (no pun intended) with standout roles in acclaimed films like Till, The Piano Lesson, I Saw the TV Glow, The Harder They Fall, and the HBO miniseries Station Eleven, is finally living up to her wonderfully ominous surname—one that's practically made for horror's next scream queen, if you ask us.
In The Woman in the Yard, for which a brand-new trailer has just been released, Deadwyler plays a widowed mother—on crutches, no less—desperately trying to protect her family from a terrifying ghostly apparition. This supernatural horror thriller is another Blumhouse production, so you can expect the usual thick layer of creepy atmosphere, with plenty of shadow play. The ghost, the so-called “Woman in the Yard,” doesn’t just linger in the shadows—she manipulates them at will, making for a truly unsettling experience for the family at the center of this nightmare.
From what we gather from this new trailer, Deadwyler's character, Ramona, is reeling from the death of her husband (Russell Hornsby), who tragically passed away in a car accident. While still recovering from her own injuries—likely a broken leg—Ramona is left to care for her children, a teen boy and a little girl, at their remote family farmhouse. Naturally, it’s the perfect setting for a claustrophobic supernatural thriller, as the family has no one to turn to for help when a mysterious apparition of a woman, dressed entirely in black from head to toe (played by Okwui Okpokwasili), suddenly appears in their front yard.
So, what does this ghostly Woman in Black want? And why has she come? Well, we can tell you one thing—it’s definitely not for a cup of sugar.
Spanish-born director Jaume Collet-Serra (Black Adam, Jungle Cruise) directs, marking his return to horror after directing the 2009 sleeper hit Orphan and 2005’s House of Wax.
Collet-Serra recently directed the Christmas action thriller Carry-On, which became one of Netflix’s most-watched original films. That project also marked his first collaboration with Danielle Deadwyler, making The Woman in the Yard their second consecutive team-up.
Written by first-time feature screenwriter Sam Stefanak and produced by Jason Blum, The Woman in the Yard is set to hit theaters on March 28. Watch the new trailer, above.
Here’s the official synopsis:
A lone, spectral woman shrouded entirely in black appears on a family’s front lawn without explanation and warns them “today’s the day.”
Where did she come from? What does she want? When will she leave? Only The Woman in the Yard knows.
From Blumhouse, the most successful global brand in horror, comes a new original chiller starring BAFTA and SAG nominee Danielle Deadwyler (Till, The Harder They Fall, The Piano Lesson) as Ramona, a woman crippled by grief after she survives a car accident that takes her husband (Russell Hornsby; BMF, Fences).
Seriously injured, Ramona now must care for their 14-year-old son (Peyton Jackson; Respect, American Refugee) and 6-year-old-daughter (Estella Kahiha; Will Trent, BMF), alone in her rural farmhouse.
Then one day the woman takes form in their yard.
Ramona assumes the woman (Okwui Okpokwasili; The Exorcist: Believer, Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream) is lost or demented, but as the woman creeps nearer and nearer to the house, it becomes clear she is no ordinary figure and her intentions are anything but peaceful. Now Ramona must rally to protect herself and her children from the grasp of the woman who simply won’t leave them alone.
