"The Old Guard 2" Trailer: Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman Face Off in Netflix's Supernatural Action Sequel
In this action-packed sequel, Theron returns as Andy, leading her team of immortal mercenaries against an ancient immortal rival (Thurman).
After starring in films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, and The Fate of the Furious, Charlize Theron has proven to be an actress as skilled with action as she is with drama. She can easily take on emotionally heavy scenes in one moment, and in the next, show off a ferocity and intensity as fierce as any action hero.
It's a rare feat for any actress to make such a dramatic shift in her career. To start in the film industry as an ingenue, often unfairly defined only by her beauty, then earn critical acclaim as an Oscar-worthy performer, and finally evolve into a bona fide action hero where kicking ass becomes second nature. Who else can pull that off?
Well, we can only think of one other actress who did it, and did it before Charlize Theron... Uma “Kill Bill” Thurman! That’s right, Uma might be the only actress in Hollywood who knows exactly what Theron must have gone through, both physically and emotionally, to pull off all those stunts herself. With the Kill Bill films, Uma Thurman might have successfully paved the way for more actresses to follow.
And it seems Theron not only embraced that mantle, but is now owning it as she takes on the second installment of her supernatural action franchise, The Old Guard, where she reprises her role as a millennia-old leader of immortal warriors.
Now, if only there were a way to put these two action powerhouse women on screen together, not as friends, but as foes! Imagine Charlize Theron facing off against Uma Thurman... Imperator Furiosa in a showdown with Beatrix “The Bride” Kiddo in a sword fight, no less. Now that would be something special. That would be something epic. If only there were... a way.
Well, tadaaa! The movie gods have granted us our wish. Uma Thurman has joined the cast of The Old Guard 2, playing a mysterious ancient rival to Theron’s Andy, aka Andromache of Scythia. Thurman’s character is out to settle a centuries-old score... one that ends with Theron’s head.
Based on the Image comic book series by writer Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard follows a group of immortal mercenaries, led by Andy (Theron), who for centuries have been fighting to keep the world from descending into utter chaos. It's a mission that has become increasingly difficult to maintain. Andy and her team are exhausted and battle-worn.
In the first Netflix film, the team brought on a new immortal member, Nile Freeman (played by KiKi Layne), a young U.S. Marine who discovered her immortality after being fatally wounded in combat. Nile was enlisted by Andy to fight against a powerful organization seeking to exploit the team's eternal abilities.
In this upcoming sequel, Andy and her team will face off against a new foe, Discord (played by Uma Thurman), a powerful ancient immortal... the first immortal. She believes Andy and her team have been fighting on the wrong side, as she plots to bring humanity to its knees. Cue the fights, sword and gun battles, as things get personal, intense, and absolutely explosive.
Oh, there’s one slight problem, however... Theron’s Andy isn’t healing from wounds like she used to. She might be mortal again. So, this is definitely going to be a battle to the death this time around.
With comic book writer Greg Rucka back as the screenwriter, The Old Guard 2 is directed by actress-turned-filmmaker Victoria Mahoney, who made her directorial debut with the 2011 indie Yelling to the Sky.
In addition to Theron, Thurman, and Layne, returning for the sequel are Marwan Kenzari as Joe, Luca Marinelli as Nicky, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Chiwetel Ejiofor as James Copley, with Vân Veronica Ngô back as the villainous Quỳnh. Henry Golding has also been added to the cast.
The Old Guard 2 arrives on Netflix this summer, starting July 2nd. Watch the film’s official trailer, above.
