"The Conjuring: Last Rites" Teaser Trailer: Ed and Lorraine Warren Face Their Final Supernatural Investigation in This Haunting Horror Sequel, Starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson
Farmiga and Wilson return for the Warrens’ last documented case, diving into the chilling 1986 Smurl haunting case.
Like it or not, The Conjuring might be considered one of the few horror films (if not the only one) of the last decade that not only successfully branched off into its own multi-billion dollar franchise but also built an entire universe for multiple spinoffs. In a way, the films used the Marvel Studios method to create their own cinematic universe. It’s the horror equivalent of the MCU, with Ed and Lorraine Warren acting as the Avengers, anchoring and connecting the various stories and characters in this paranormal world.
From Annabelle to The Nun, this universe has proven that the supernatural and horror genres can create a shared world as effectively as any superhero saga, resulting in box office glory. However, as the Conjuring franchise continues, there’s an undeniable sense of diminishing returns. With each new sequel and spinoff, the impact seems a little more diluted, making the films feel more derivative than innovative, and leaving many horror fans, us included, wondering if the well has run dry.
Well, perhaps this is the very reason why franchise creator James Wan is calling this last installment the final Ed and Lorraine Warren story. After nearly a decade of supernatural thrills and paranormal investigations, Wan seems to be acknowledging that it's time to close the door on the Warrens’ legacy, ensuring their final chapter feels like a proper send-off.
It’s probably a wise move, as Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, who have portrayed real-life famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren for nearly ten years now, have already earned their horror stripes. They will likely go down as one of the most iconic duos in modern horror cinema. And if you asked us, Farmiga and Wilson are the sole reasons why we continue to come back, as their performances have always been the heart and soul of the franchise. Well, c’est la vie! Everything eventually comes to an end, but certainly, their legacy in the horror world will live on.
With horror filmmaker Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) back in the director’s chair, The Conjuring: Last Rites sees Ed and Lorraine Warren (Wilson and Farmiga) tackling their final documented case: the infamous 1986 Smurl haunting. This case involved a Pennsylvanian family who reportedly experienced an intense poltergeist in their home, including physical attacks and shadowy figures that appeared to be demonic in nature.
So, why was the Smurl case the Warrens’ final investigation?
Well, according to the film’s first official teaser trailer, Lorraine, a known clairvoyant and medium, warns, “Something's changed... Something's different.” So, in other words, you’ll have to head to the movie theaters to get the answers.
The film co-stars Mia Tomlinson as Judy Warren, Ed and Lorraine's daughter, with Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody) playing Judy's boyfriend, Tony Spera. Rounding out the cast are Steve Coulter, returning as Father Gordon, along with Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon, John Brotherton, and Shannon Kook.
Chaves directs from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing (the writing duo behind The Autopsy of Jane Doe) and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (Orphan, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom), with a story by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick & James Wan, based on characters created by Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes.
The film, and the franchise, are inspired by Ed and Lorraine's real-life cases and the many books they have written about their experiences.
The Conjuring: Last Rites aims to scare up audiences when it arrives in theaters on September 5th nationwide.
