"The Better Sister" Trailer: Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks Are Estranged Sisters Facing Family Secrets and a Probing Murder Investigation in Amazon's New Whodunit Series
Estranged sisters (Biel and Banks) unravel their troubled pasts and confront a murder investigation that threatens to tear their family apart.
The closest people in our lives are family. And family, at times, has the power to support us or to destroy us. Siblings add another layer of complexity, as they share the same upbringing but sometimes end up with very different outcomes. In this new Amazon original series, starring Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks as two estranged sisters, the story delves into this very notion that the closer we are, the more we can hurt each other.
Based on the novel by best-selling author Alafair Burke, The Better Sister is a new eight-episode murder-mystery series that stars Jessica Biel as Chloe Taylor, a successful New York executive who returns home only to discover the bloodied body of her husband in their living room.
The ensuing murder investigation not only puts Chloe at the center of a media storm but also begins to unravel her seemingly perfect life with her high-powered attorney husband, Adam (played by Corey Stoll in flashback scenes).
Adding even more anxiety and distress to an already tense situation, Chloe’s older, estranged sister Nicky (played by Elizabeth Banks) arrives to help out. Nicky, who has always been viewed as the family screw-up, finds herself adding more fuel to the fire as it’s revealed that she is the biological mother of Chloe’s teenage son, Ethan (played by Maxwell Acee Donovan).
To make matters worse, Ethan is now being looked at by the police as the possible main suspect in the murder of Chloe’s husband, the man who raised Ethan as his own son. Now the papers are eating up the story, leading to more rumors and speculation, turning Chloe’s already fragile world into a public spectacle.
Chloe, always the more level-headed and career-minded of the two sisters, must find a way to balance the pain of her husband’s murder, the guilt or innocence of her son, and now her sister’s erratic behavior of trying to protect Ethan at all costs, no matter what. Well, it’s enough to push anyone to the edge of sanity.
Kim Dickens co-stars as one of the homicide detectives looking for the truth, while Gloria Reuben plays a high-powered attorney whom Chloe and Nicky have hired for Ethan.
Other cast members include Lorraine Toussaint, Matthew Modine, Bobby Naderi, Gabriel Sloyer, Frederick Weller, and Paul Sparks.
The Better Sister is executive produced by co-showrunners Olivia Milch (Ocean’s 8) and Regina Corrado (Mayor of Kingstown). Meanwhile, Director Craig Gillespie (of the film I, Tonya, and the miniseries Pam & Tommy) is directing all eight episodes in the series as well as executive producing.
A collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios and Tomorrow Studios, The Better Sister is set to premiere on Prime Video on Thursday, May 29th.
