"Stick" Trailer: Owen Wilson Stars as a Washed-Up Golfer Who Takes a Young Protégé Under His Wing in Apple’s New Underdog Sports Series with Peter Dager and Marc Maron
Wilson plays a washed-up golfer who discovers a young prodigy and gets a second shot at success.
If you take all the sports-related films and TV shows in history, the sport of golf might be the one in short supply. Perhaps Caddyshack, Tin Cup, and Billy Madison come to mind as the first to highlight golf, but beyond those, there’s a noticeable gap. Unless, of course, you still count comedian Tim Conway’s straight-to-home video Dorf franchise, which, while inappropriately quirky, doesn’t exactly fill the void of serious golf-related entertainment.
Well, it seems Owen Wilson is here to rectify things by adding a new golf series to the stack. And it has exactly what you want in a sports series: an old underdog out to prove he still has what it takes, and the mentorship between a grizzled professional and a young, confident prodigy. Plus, comedian Marc Maron co-stars as the grumpy know-it-all who hates being pulled into someone else’s dream. So, essentially, Marc Maron is playing a version of himself.
What else can you ask for? It’s the perfect mix of quirky characters, an underdog journey to the championships, and a healthy dose of humor on the fairways—exactly what you need to make golf a bit more interesting on screen.
Created and written by Jason Keller, who was one of the screenwriters behind James Mangold’s racing drama Ford v Ferrari, Stick sees Owen Wilson as Pryce “Stick” Cahill, a failed professional golfer who is best known these days for his complete emotional meltdown that led to his fall from grace. Now on the verge of a divorce and losing his job, Pryce finds himself at the lowest point of his life. But then something happens that just might turn it around for him: he discovers a kid with a mean golf swing.
Now, Pryce believes the game he once loved is calling him back. But this time, it’s to serve as the mentor and coach for this new golfing whiz kid and lead him to the U.S. Amateur Championships. But with everything on the line, can Pryce survive if his gamble doesn’t pan out like he hoped? Or will it be the final straw, the one that breaks him beyond repair?
Besides Wilson and Maron, the cast includes Judy Greer (13 Going on 30) as Pryce’s soon-to-be ex-wife, Amber-Linn, and Peter Dager (Insidious: The Red Door) as Santi Wheeler, Pryce’s new yet cocky golf protege. Mariana Treviño (A Man Called Otto) also costars as Santi’s mother, Elena.
Timothy Olyphant also stars, along with guest appearances from golf superstars and sports broadcasters that include Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa, Wyndham Clark, Jim Nantz, Trevor Immelman, and more.
Directing duo Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, known for the tennis biopic Battle of the Sexes and the feel-good hit Little Miss Sunshine, are directing the premiere episode.
Other episodes in the series will be handled by an impressive line-up of directors that include David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers), Jaffar Mahmood (Young Sheldon), M.J. Delaney (Ted Lasso), and John Hamburg (Along Came Polly).
Stick is set to premiere on Apple TV+ starting Wednesday, June 4th. Watch the trailer, above.
