"Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" Trailer: Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer Reunite for Rob Reiner’s Mockumentary Sequel
The amps go to 11 once more as Spinal Tap returns for a reunion tour full of chaos, collapses, and classic deadpan mayhem.
They say rock ‘n’ roll can never die as long as you have the spirit of rebellion flowing in your veins. Well, these old rockers are out to prove that age is just a number… and loud guitars always crank it up to 11.
That’s right! Spinal Tap are back, ladies and gentlemen.
And those heavy metal gods might be hitting their golden ages, but that doesn't mean they’re turning the volume down anytime soon. They’ve still got the fire, the spunk, and the swagger to put on a killer rock show. That is, if they can finally find a drummer who won’t accidentally (and tragically) die on them.
As lead singer-guitarist David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean — he’s the fire), lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest — he’s the ice), and bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer — he’s the lukewarm water) prepare to hit the road for their much-anticipated reunion tour, filmmaker Marty Di Bergi (Rob Reiner) has agreed to once again follow the iconic band with cameras and capture all the zaniness (and the idiocy) that goes into putting on a good show.
It’s been more than 40 years since we last saw these heavy metal masters in action... and a lot has happened since then. So, it’s time to catch up, relive that rock ‘n’ roll glory, and witness whether Spinal Tap still has what it takes to melt faces... and maybe even stay together long enough to please their diehard fans, which includes Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Questlove.
So, rock on! And never forget, there’s a fine line between stupid, and uh... clever.
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is the long-awaited follow-up to Rob Reiner’s seminal 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. A fake documentary about a fake heavy metal band whose tour goes off the rails in every possible way imaginable, the film became one of the most influential comedies of all time. It also inspired Christopher Guest to create his now-iconic improvisational mockumentaries, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration, that continued the spirit of deadpan, straight-faced lunacy.
One could even argue This Is Spinal Tap, with its massive success and cult status, helped usher in a new wave of comedic mockery that used the documentary format—think characters speaking directly to camera—as a storytelling device. Without Spinal Tap, would we have The Office, Parks and Recreation, or Modern Family? Quite possibly not.
And let’s not forget one of the film’s most absurdly monumental accomplishments: it may have marked the first time American comedians successfully pulled off British accents to poke fun at British mannerisms. It arguably paved the way and created a space for someone like Mike Myers to make his Austin Powers films.
Anyhoo, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will also feature the comic stylings of John Michael Higgins, Don Lake, Nina Conti, Chris Addison, Kathreen Khavari, and Kerry Godliman—with Paul Shaffer and Fran Drescher also returning to the fold.
Fans can expect the amps to go to 11 once more when Spinal Tap II: The End Continues invades theaters on September 12th. So, crank it up!
