"Spaceballs 2" Announcement Teaser: Mel Brooks Returns for Long-Awaited Sequel to His Classic '80s Star Wars Spoof – Hitting Theaters in 2027
The long-awaited Spaceballs sequel is in the works, with Mel Brooks reprising his role as Yogurt!
When comedy legend Mel Brooks released his now-classic sci-fi spoof Spaceballs back in 1987, he really only had the original Star Wars trilogy to poke fun at.
Now, nearly forty years later, Brooks and his team have an entire galaxy of sci-fi tropes and convoluted storylines to riff on as they cook up a sequel. That’s right, a sequel... a long-awaited sequel to his much-adored Star Wars parody.
Brooks has announced Spaceballs 2 is officially in the works, promising a lampoon fit for the CGI-fueled, franchise-mad fandom we know today.
So, will it be as funny as the original?
Well, that’s a high bar, as Spaceballs came out at the height of ’80s Star Wars fever. This new comedy, however, comes out at a time when the galaxy far, far away has weathered blockbuster highs and divisive missteps. But then again, it just might mean audiences are simply ready for a good Star Wars roast—for which Brooks is happy to oblige.
So here, check out this announcement teaser (watch it above) with Mel Brooks (at 98 and still looking good) delivering a hearty “May the Schwartz be with you,” one of his iconic quotes from Spaceballs.
So, who’s behind the upcoming sequel other than Mel Brooks, who will be serving as an executive producer as well as reprising his role of the Yoda-like sage Yogurt?
Well, this is what we know, according to trade reports: Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are both set to return, reprising their respective roles as Lone Starr (the Han Solo/Luke Skywalker caricature) and Dark Helmet (the Darth Vader parody). Daphne Zuniga is also expected to return as Queen Vespa, the Princess Leia equivalent.
Meanwhile, Nope star Keke Palmer has also been cast in an undisclosed role. And this just in, Thunderbolts star Lewis Pullman will join his father, Bill Pullman, in a yet undisclosed part.
Josh Greenbaum (the director behind the cult comedy Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) will helm the sequel, working from a script by comedy writers Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and comic actor Josh Gad. Gad is also expected to produce and play a character—perhaps the son of Brooks’s President Skroob… or he could turn out to be the offspring of Barf, John Candy’s beloved half-man, half-dog sidekick. Who knows what cosmic hijinks await?
Spaceballs 2 won’t hit theaters until 2027, so mark your calendars and prepare to go ludicrous speed one more time!
