"Nobody 2" Trailer: Bob Odenkirk Returns for More Action and Chaos in this Action Sequel with Connie Nielsen and Sharon Stone
Odenkirk’s Hutch Mansell takes his lethal skills on a family vacation gone awry, facing off against Sharon Stone in this action-packed sequel.
The 2021 action film Nobody had an incredible hook: what if the most average family man in the world was secretly the most lethal assassin known to man? The challenge then became how to successfully transform an ordinary boring nobody into a believable killing machine, someone capable of taking on rows of bad guys without breaking a sweat. The film nails this transformation, making Hutch Mansell (played by Bob Odenkirk) not just an unexpected action hero, but a relatable one, grounded in his everyday life before unleashing his brutal skills.
At the time, Odenkirk was getting critical acclaim for portraying the now-iconic sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman (a.k.a. Jimmy McGill) in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. But for most of his career, Odenkirk had been a highly regarded comedian and comedy writer, making his turn as a hardened, bone-breaking, knuckle-brawling protagonist in Nobody all the more surprising. Especially surprising for those who grew up on his comedy and sketches. Odenkirk’s history in the comic world is well known and well respected, for instance, being one of the main architects behind Chris Farley’s iconic SNL motivational speaker character, Matt Foley. His sketch comedy series with fellow comic David Cross, Mr. Show, was also a cult ‘90s sensation, making Odenkirk’s transition into action one of the coolest surprises in recent film history.
And that was one of the major enjoyments of watching Nobody—seeing Odenkirk, who at the time was approaching his 60s, transform into a bona fide badass, proving that age is just a number and that even the most unlikely action stars can deliver memorable performances. Odenkirk went into intensive training for months to pull off these action scenes like a seasoned professional. He not only delivered but also added a sense of authenticity and vulnerability to his character, making Hutch Mansell not just a tough guy, but a complex, relatable action hero—one who desperately wants to protect his family but doesn’t know how without slipping back into his violent past or succumbing to his darker, more violent self.
Nobody was released during the pandemic in March of 2021 and made a respectable $57 million at the worldwide box office. We imagine the film only grew in popularity once it hit VOD and streaming, with more viewers discovering the action-packed thriller. Now, four years later, Odenkirk has returned for the sequel.
But here’s the thing: now that everyone knows Odenkirk can pull off these fight scenes relatively believably, is there still room for any more surprises? Will the sequel be able to push his character, Hutch Mansell, to new limits, or will it be about expanding the world and deepening the stakes rather than just relying on more action-packed moments?
Well, maybe it’s just more simple than that. Maybe Odenkirk will lean more into his comedy roots, as this first official trailer for Nobody 2 is teeming with National Lampoon’s Vacation vibes, complete with images set to the Lindsey Buckingham classic song Holiday Road. It looks like the sequel is aiming to blend action with a dash of humor, embracing a more irreverent tone as Hutch and his family are out on a family vacation that quickly spirals into a chaotic mess, where Hutch has no other choice but to bring out his lethal skills once again.
It’s quite literally just like National Lampoon’s Vacation but if Chevy Chase’s bumbling father character Clark W. Griswold goes to town with local thugs, unintentionally igniting a war with a local mob-connected drug-running syndicate run by a ruthless Queenpin, played none other than Sharon Stone.
Renowned Indonesian action director Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes for Us) takes over the directing reins for this action sequel, which sees the return of Connie Nielsen as Hutch’s wife, Becca Mansell, with Gage Munroe and Paisley Cadorath also back as their teenage children, Brady and Sammy.
Christopher Lloyd also returns as Hutch’s grumpy ex-FBI agent father, David Mansell, with rapper/actor RZA also returning as Hutch’s adopted brother and equally lethal assassin, Harry. Colin Hanks joins the sequel, playing a crooked small-town sheriff secretly working for Sharon Stone’s Lendina, a woman you don’t want to cross unless you have a death wish.
Produced by John Wick filmmaker and stunt coordinator David Leitch, under his production company 87North Productions, Nobody 2 will be coming to theaters this summer starting August 15th.
Official Synopsis:
Sometimes the most dangerous place for a dad is a family vacation.
Bob Odenkirk returns as suburban husband, father and workaholic assassin Hutch Mansell in the new chapter to Nobody, the hit 2021 bare-knuckle action-thriller that opened at number one at the U.S. box office. Four years after he inadvertently took on the Russian mob, Hutch remains $30 million in debt to the criminal organization and is working it off with an unending string of hits on international thugs.
Much as he likes the slam-bang action of his “job,” Hutch and his wife Becca (International Emmy nominee Connie Nielsen) find themselves overworked and drifting apart. So, they decide to take their kids (Gage Munroe, Paisley Cadorath) on a short getaway to Wild Bill’s Majestic Midway and Waterpark, the one and only place where Hutch and his brother Harry (Grammy and Emmy nominee RZA) went on a vacation as kids. With Hutch’s dad (Emmy winner Christopher Lloyd) in tow, the family arrives in the small tourist town of Plummerville (“Plummerville is Summerville!”), eager for some fun in the sun. But when a minor encounter with some town bullies yanks the family into the crosshairs of a corrupt theme-park operator (John Ortiz; Fast and Furious franchise, Bumblebee) and his shady sheriff (Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Colin Hanks), Hutch finds himself the focus of the most unhinged, blood-thirsty crime boss he (or anyone) has ever encountered (Emmy winning and Oscar® nominated screen icon, Sharon Stone).
