You would think that after winning a Best Actor Oscar for Sinners, Michael B. Jordan might want to take some time off and bask in the glow of his victory. But then again, Jordan has never been one to slow down or rest on his laurels. He is already back in the saddle, proving that for some Oscar winners, the work never ends... it only gets bigger.

This time, Jordan wears multiple hats, directing, producing, and starring in a new adaptation of The Thomas Crown Affair, a heist thriller that has been reinvented once before and now appears ready for another stylish makeover, with Jordan in the lead opposite Adria Arjona.

Jordan plays the titular billionaire master thief Thomas Crown, whose suits are as impeccably tailored as the elaborate schemes he uses to pull off impossible scores. This debonair art bandit was once a professional race car driver whose career ended after a terrible accident. Now, he channels that thrill-seeking impulse into increasingly daring heists, chasing the same rush he once found behind the wheel.

Meanwhile, Arjona joins the fray as a tenacious insurance investigator who crosses paths with Crown, whose charm may prove just as dangerous as his criminal reputation. While Crown eyes his next score in plain sight, Arjona’s character recognizes the one detail everyone else overlooks: most thieves eventually get caught... it is only a matter of when they make a mistake.

But what begins as a cat-and-mouse pursuit ultimately develops into a dangerous romance, blurring the line between hunter and thief and making it harder to tell who is really playing whom.

With Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbæk, Aubrey Plaza, Ruth Negga, Aiysha Hart, and Paapa Essiedu filling out the supporting cast, Jordan has surrounded himself with serious talent while pushing the film toward a sleeker, more action-heavy direction.

Judging by this teaser trailer, Jordan, who made his feature directorial debut with Creed III, appears to be leaning into a distinctly James Bond-style edge, with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young (Arrival, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Selma) working his magic behind the lens.

It will be interesting to see how this new version compares with the previous two. The 1968 film starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway remains a stone-cold classic, further cementing director Norman Jewison’s reputation as one of the era’s most versatile filmmakers. Then there is John McTiernan’s 1999 remake with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, a stylish caper that was somewhat overlooked at the time but has since earned recognition as one of Brosnan’s best films outside the Bond franchise.

Whatever the outcome, Michael B. Jordan certainly looks good in a suit... and right at home playing the debonair gentleman thief who always seems to be one step ahead of everyone chasing him.

The Thomas Crown Affair will arrive in theaters March 5, 2027.

🎥 “Jumanji: Open World” Trailer: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan Bring the Game Into the Real World in This Final Installment of the Action-Comedy Franchise — Hitting Theaters December 25th

There’s no secret that Dwayne Johnson has hit a rough patch lately, especially after the disappointing summer box-office performance of Disney’s live-action Moana. Once considered one of Hollywood’s most dependable stars, Johnson has entered the kind of downturn that nearly every major movie star eventually has to weather. Nevertheless, he will have another chance this year to remind audiences why his larger-than-life charisma helped turn him into a movie star in the first place.

Johnson will once again reunite with comedian Kevin Hart, comedy superstar Jack Black, and MCU star Karen Gillan for Jumanji: Open World, the reportedly final installment in the modern action-comedy trilogy inspired by the beloved 1995 Robin Williams blockbuster.

Director Jake Kasdan, who has been in the director’s chair for the entire three-film run, returns to bring the gang back together for another round of body-swapping antics, giant creature attacks, and increasingly ridiculous life-or-death challenges.

The twist here: those Jumanji video game avatars are now loose in the real world, far away from the rules and safeguards of their digital jungle. That also means the real world is no longer safe from hordes of rogue animals suddenly running wild, setting up a new level of the game that feels all too real.

Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darius Blain, Rhys Darby, Nick Jonas, and Danny DeVito are also back, as game characters Dr. “Smolder” Bravestone (Johnson), sidekick Mouse Finbar (Hart), dance-fighting survivalist Ruby Roundhouse (Gillan), and code-breaking Professor Shelly Oberon (Black) suddenly materialize in the real world. Now, the human players who once controlled them must figure out how to stop a game that no longer appears interested in following its own rules. This makes the new setup feel much closer to the premise of the 1995 original. Full circle, perhaps.

Jumanji: Open World is due to open in theaters December 25th.

🎥 “Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!” Trailer: Rinko Kikuchi Dances Through Grief and Second Chances in Josef Kubota Wladyka’s Sundance-Winning Feel-Good Dance Flick — Twirling Into Theaters September 25th

Dance. No one gives it enough credit as an art form that can express emotions while also telling stories and communicating ideas without saying a single word.

And while “Shake Your Booty” may have been turned into a disco command by KC and the Sunshine Band, letting go of yourself completely on the dance floor might qualify as its own kind of spiritual experience. Because sometimes moving forward begins by simply moving.

That seems to be the idea running through Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!, the new music-driven comedy-drama starring Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi, who began her international career playing a rebellious teenager in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2006 drama Babel and has since matured into a versatile powerhouse. Need proof? Just watch her in Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, Pacific Rim, or, more recently, HBO’s crime series Tokyo Vice.

Here, Kikuchi takes on the role of Haru, a competitive ballroom dancer in Tokyo whose life collapses after the sudden death of her husband and lifelong dance partner. Nine months later, Haru remains grief-stricken. She has withdrawn from her friends, family, and the ballroom studio that once gave her life purpose and meaning.

But when Haru’s sister and friends finally persuade her to return to the dance studio, she meets Fedir, a magnetic new dance instructor played by Cuban actor Alberto Guerra (Narcos: Mexico). Their immediate connection awakens feelings she believed had disappeared months ago. But it also leaves her caught between loyalty to the past and the unsettling possibility of wanting to dance again; even with a partner who isn’t her late husband.

Japanese-American filmmaker Josef Kubota Wladyka, who recently worked in television, directing episodes of Narcos, The Terror: Infamy, and Tokyo Vice—where he previously collaborated with Kikuchi—was awarded the U.S. Dramatic Directing Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where the film made its world premiere to rave reviews.

So, if you’re looking for a life-affirming movie where shaking booties isn’t just for fun but part of the healing process, this one may be worth saving a dance for. Ah, shake, shake, shake, shake...

🎥 “Fall 2: Deadpoint” Trailer: Harriet Slater and Arsema Thomas Are Stranded 5,000 Feet Above Ground in This Vertigo-Inducing Survival Sequel — Coming to Theaters September 2nd

What goes up must eventually come down, right?

That’s the uneasy thought running through our minds whenever we see someone reckless enough to cross a tightrope, scale a high tower of some kind, or inch along a narrow ledge on a mountain with nothing but open air beneath them.

That fear... that gut-churning suspense is likely one of the major reasons why the 2022 survival thriller Fall became such a huge sleeper hit that year. Sure, we may know the actors are standing on a controlled set, surrounded by safety equipment and visual effects, but watching someone dangle thousands of feet above the ground still produces that unmistakable pit in the stomach.

Now the franchise is climbing even higher. And we can already feel our stomachs clenching.

Fall 2: Deadpoint shifts the action from an abandoned communications tower to the exposed planks of Mount Kwan, where two women find themselves stranded 5,000 feet above the ground after a devastating rockslide destroys their route to safety.

Harriet Slater stars as Jax Hunter, a deeply traumatized woman still mourning the tragic death of her thrill-seeking sister, Shiloh, played by Virginia Gardner in the original film. Hoping to honor her memory, Jax joins Hunter’s former friend Luce, played by Arsema Thomas, for a dangerous plank walk high above the mountains of Taipei.

Now the question is... why? That’s not exactly the safest way to process grief, right?

It doesn’t matter, as Fall 2: Deadpoint seems to know exactly what its audience wants to see: two female characters in the most extreme situation imaginable, where they must contend with vertigo, exposure, injury, and the creeping realization that one wrong move could send either of them plummeting to their deaths.

Taking over directing duties are Peter and Michael Spierig, the twin Australian filmmakers behind the cult genre hits Daybreakers, Predestination, Jigsaw, and Winchester. Their films tend to place characters inside tightly engineered genre traps, making them a natural fit for a sequel built around limited space, escalating danger, and the fear of falling from what would feel like an impossible height.

Scott Mann and Jonathan Frank, who wrote the original film, return for the screenplay. Tom Brittney also joins the cast, while Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey return in guest cameos as original protagonists Shiloh Hunter and Becky Connor.

Fall 2: Deadpoint opens in theaters September 2nd. Come for the scream-inducing thrills, but stay... not because you want to, but because your feet are frozen in place.
