"Five Nights at Freddy’s 2" Trailer: Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail and Piper Rubio Again Face Animatronic Terror as Freddy Fazbear Returns in Blumhouse’s Horror Sequel
Freddy's not done yet. With cryptic whispers, new nightmares, and returning survivors, the terror reignites in this follow-up to the 2023 box office smash, based on the cult video game franchise.
Just when you thought it was safe to break into an abandoned pizza restaurant at night.
Word to the wise! If you ever get the inkling to take a group of friends on a nice nighttime excursion through a Chuck E. Cheese–like establishment because you heard a bizarre story about a murder... well, don’t be surprised if, the moment you step into the animatronic-filled darkness, things start to go horribly wrong... deadly wrong!
From creaking stage curtains to lifeless mascot costumes that might not be as lifeless as they seem, this creepy late-night adventure quickly turns into a fight for survival. As the power flickers and eerie music starts to play on its own, you realize too late: this place doesn’t want you to leave. Now who’s laughing?
What started as a hugely popular survival horror game that some still don’t get what all the hubbub is about, Five Nights at Freddy’s is the latest video game franchise to successfully transform into a film series—thanks in part to the horror-savvy minds at Blumhouse, but also to the legions of fans who couldn’t get enough of its terrifying lore and jump-scare-filled gameplay, which translated well enough on the big screen.
The first Five Nights at Freddy’s film was released in October of 2023 and became one of the first huge surprise hits of the post-COVID box office era, pulling in approximately $290 million worldwide on a budget of about $20 million. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the movie struck a chord with audiences (particularly younger fans and gamers), pulling in impressive numbers both theatrically and on streaming, where it dropped simultaneously on Peacock.
So, obviously... a sequel. It's a no-brainer.
With that kind of box office haul and a built-in fanbase hungry for more, Blumhouse has now turned the ignition on the promotional machine, releasing the first official trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. And from the looks of it, fans can expect plenty of flickering lights, fuzzy security cameras, terrifying jump scares, blood-curdling screams, and yes... enough possessed animatronic mayhem to please.
With its eerie atmosphere and twisted backstory about missing children and a haunted pizzeria, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 picks up where the first film left off.
Josh Hutcherson returns as former nighttime security guard Mike Schmidt, still grappling with the traumatic events where he and officer Vanessa Shelly (played once again by Elizabeth Lail) barely made it out alive.
Believing the worst is behind them, Mike and Vanessa are shocked to discover that Freddy Fazbear’s evil isn’t done with them yet. In particular, Mike's younger sister Abby (again played by Piper Rubio) begins showing signs that her connection to the haunted animatronics hasn’t faded. She just wants to talk to her “friends” again.
Well... wish granted.
Freddy begins communicating with Abby through her Five Nights at Freddy’s toy communicator box, whispering cryptic and unsettling pleas: “Help us! Come find us!” What starts as eerie messages quickly escalates into a terrifying new mystery—one that forces Mike, Abby, and Vanessa to return to the scene of the horror. Only this time, the animatronics aren’t just waking up at night... they’re waiting.
Again directed by Five Nights at Freddy’s helmer Emma Tammi, the sequel is penned by Scott Cawthon, the creator of the video game franchise. Cawthon also serves as an executive producer, and who has a rare deal with Blumhouse where he gets final word, not Jason Blum.
The cast also includes Mckenna Grace, Teo Briones, and Wayne Knight, with Skeet Ulrich joining as one of the co-founders of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Meanwhile, fellow Scream alum Matthew Lillard is expected to return as William Afton, Officer Vanessa Shelly's father who was revealed in the first film to be a serial killer.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is coming to theaters December 5th. The movie is expected to make a presence this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con.
Official Synopsis:
We’re not done with you… They’re not just at Freddy’s anymore.

One year has passed since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town’s first ever Fazfest.
Former security guard Mike (Josh Hutcherson) and police officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) have kept the truth from Mike’s 11-year-old sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), concerning the fate of her animatronic friends.
But when Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, it will set into motion a terrifying series of events, revealing dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy’s, and unleashing a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades.
The cast of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 includes returning co-stars Theodus Crane as Jeremiah and the legendary Matthew Lillard as William Afton. The film features new characters played by Freddy Carter (Shadow and Bone, Pennyworth), Wayne Knight (Jurassic Park, Seinfeld), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters franchise, Annabelle Comes Home) and horror icon Skeet Ulrich (Scream, Riverdale).
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is directed by acclaimed returning filmmaker Emma Tammi and is written by game series creator Scott Cawthon.
The film is produced by Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon, who together produced the first film. The executive producers are director Emma Tammi, Beatriz Sequeira, Christopher Warner, Russell Binder and Marc Mostman.
The first Freddy’s film opened to a record-shattering $80 million in October 2023 and went on to earn almost $300 million worldwide.
