"Eden" Trailer: Ron Howard’s Survival Thriller Turns the Galápagos Into a Paradise Lost, Starring Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl and Sydney Sweeney
Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl and Sydney Sweeney star in this historical drama about a failed utopian settlement in the 1930s that spirals into scandal, mystery, and survival.
It’s the early 1930s, and you’re stuck on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean, 600 miles off the west coast of South America. There are no amenities or creature comforts to make your stay even remotely pleasant. In fact, every animal on the island could probably kill you with just a quick sting, bite, or scratch. You have to fend for yourself—hunting, cooking your food, and building a makeshift shelter to survive the nights.
Sounds like a version of hell you’d probably want to avoid at all costs, right?
But wait—what if you weren’t alone on this island? What if you’re sharing it with people who resemble Ana de Armas, Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl, and Sydney Sweeney?
Okay, okay, now it’s starting to sound a bit better, right? Maybe this could actually be… paradise.
Well, you'd be wrong! So, wrong. This is nothing even remotely near paradise. But it does make an intriguing premise for a movie. Say, one directed by Ron Howard.
Well, here ya go! Here's the newly-released international trailer for Eden, Ron Howard's latest historical survival drama that's based on a harrowing true story of a group of German settlers who, in the early 1930s, tried to establish an utopian village community on the Galápagos Islands, only to have those dreams dashed by jealousy, anger, and indiscretions.
Jude Law stars as Dr. Friedrich Ritter, a real-life German scientist who sought to create a self-sufficient community on the Galápagos Islands with the hopes of building an idealistic system where communal relationships are key and equality is valued.
Vanessa Kirby plays Dr. Friedrich Ritter's romantic partner, Dore Strauch, who shares his utopian vision, despite the low probability of it coming to fruition.
Daniel Brühl and Sydney Sweeney costar as Heinz and Margret Wittmer, a humble German couple who manage to build a homestead on the island with their children. Perhaps not totally on board with Ritter's idea of creating a utopian society, they prove the island is livable and sustainable.
However, trouble comes in the form of Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn (played by Ana de Armas). She is an Austrian Baroness (or claims to be a Baroness with no proof) and has grand plans of building a high-end luxury hotel on the island, a destination for wealthy tourists. This, of course, goes against everything Dr. Friedrich Ritter believes in.
Eloise also brings to the island a degree of hedonism, with a sultry open sexuality as she is accompanied by two male lovers (played by The Bikeriders' Toby Wallace and All Quiet on the Western Front's Felix Kammerer).
Written by Noah Pink (Tetris), Eden is based on a true, scandalous story and mystery behind what really happened on the island.
It has become the basis of several books, including “Floreana: A Woman's Pilgrimage to the Galápagos” by Margret Wittmer, and “The Galápagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden” by Dore Strauch, and John Treherne. There have also been several documentaries, articles, and podcasts as well.
Eden premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received mixed reviews from critics, which could explain why the film doesn't have an official U.S. distributor or release date yet. The film, nevertheless, will open in Germany in April.
