"Deep Cover" Trailer: Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed Star as Three Improv Comics Going Undercover in Amazon Prime's New British Crime Comedy
Three improv comedians (Dallas Howard, Bloom, Mohammed) take on a dangerous undercover mission to bust London’s most dangerous criminals in this crime comedy.
They say laughter is the best medicine. That the power of comedy can soothe the soul. But apparently, it’s also the best method of catching dodgy criminals, if applied correctly and preferably in a scenario where one can use the golden rule of improv: "yes, and...."
Well, at least that’s the theory at play in this new Amazon original film Deep Cover, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, Ted Lasso’s Nick Mohammed, and Game of Thrones’ Sean Bean.
In this crime comedy set in London, Dallas Howard plays Kat, an ordinary American improv teacher who’s barely making a living with weekly classes, offering pearls of wisdom and the correct methods of improvisational comedy to a room of amateurs. She teaches that everyone can live in the moment and control a situation using the tools of the comedy trade.
But when a hard-boiled detective (Sean Bean) approaches Kat with a wild proposition of going undercover for him, she sees it as an opportunity to put into practice everything she’s been teaching in her classes. Plus, she’d get paid. And she really needs that damn money.
But before she takes on the assignment, Kat will have to recruit two of her best pupils for the mission, posing as a couple of big-time drug dealers looking to score a deal. Enter Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed!
Bloom plays a struggling actor fresh out of acting gigs, while Mohammed is a bashful office worker with a knack for going with the flow, wherever the scene takes him.
Now, this might just be the worst idea ever: having three would-be improv comics set up a drug deal with some of London’s most wanted criminals in the hopes of bringing them down. So, if it works, the streets will be rid of some seriously dangerous players. But if it fails, London will be short of three improv comedians. Hmm. Thinking about it for a little and weighing the outcomes, it just might be a risk worth taking.
The film is helmed by British television director Tom Kingsley, whose directing credits include several episodes of the breakout UK comedy Ghosts. While the screenplay came from screenwriter Derek Connolly & director Colin Trevorrow, the team behind Safety Not Guaranteed and Jurassic World Dominion, with a screenplay polish by British comics Ben Ashenden & Alexander Owen.
Co-starring Paddy Considine, Sonoya Mizuno, and Ian McShane and produced by Men in Black producers Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, Deep Cover is set to debut on Prime Video June 12th.
