David Corenswet Takes Flight in New "Superman" TV Spot, Showcasing the Man of Steel's Iconic Imagery
James Gunn’s highly anticipated DC relaunch debuts its first commercial, featuring fresh glimpses of David Corenswet's Superman and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor.
If you’ve been watching live television this weekend, mainly the football playoffs, you might have caught this new promotional ad for the highly anticipated DC superhero film Superman, starring David Corenswet in the title character. While still a few months away from its theatrical release in the summer, it’s never too early to start getting the word out that a new Superman movie is on the horizon. Luckily for those who didn’t catch the official Superman television spot, titled “Icon,” when it aired this weekend, DC was kind enough to release it online for all to see.
The spot itself isn’t much different from the previously released teaser that debuted last month. The commercial is completely free of dialogue, starting with the image of a badly hurt Superman whistling for his dog Krypto for help. Then there’s a series of “icon” imagery of Superman saving a little girl from the destruction of a monster attack in slow motion. It’s the same iconic sequence from the original teaser. In fact, this commercial has a lot of the same beats from the teaser, but you do get a few new shots of Lex Luthor (a bald Nicholas Hoult) stepping out of what looks like his own private black military plane. In addition, we do see Superman (David Corenswet) flying through the air in one new special effects shot, where the camera is placed in front of his face as he zooms through an icy mountain range, caked with white snow.
Written and directed by James Gunn, who is launching his own DC cinematic universe after being given the creative reins as DC’s new co-CEO, Superman kicks off a new era for DC Studios. So, yes! A lot is riding on the shoulders of this movie. If it succeeds this summer, it could mean Marvel has something to really worry about, as it will be a new major player in the superhero film space. But if the film underperforms this summer, well, we don’t think the simple correction would be going back to the drawing board. It could mean a structural shift in management would be the more proper move. But let’s cross that bridge when we get there. No need to think negative just yet. Let’s just be happy that a new Superman is on the way.
Also starring Rachel Brosnahan as Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, alongside supporting turns from Skyler Gisondo as Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White, with Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Pa Jonathan and Ma Martha Kent, the film is no doubt one of the most anticipated superhero movies of this summer.
Superman will be flying into theaters nationwide on July 11th.
