Danny Boyle and Alex Garland Reunite For Next Chapter in the '28 Days Later' Saga! Watch the Official Trailer for "28 Years Later," Starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes
Back in 2002, "Trainspotting" director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland redefined the horror genre with their post-apocalyptic thriller "28 Days Later," reintroducing the zombie genre to a new generation of horror fans while offering a fresh take on the zombie canon. Shot on digital video with lo-fi digital cameras (one of the first films to do so), the horror movie starred Cillian Murphy as a British survivor who awakens in an abandoned hospital after 28 days in a coma, only to discover a post-apocalyptic London overrun by highly contagious, rage-fueled zombie-like victims. With society in complete collapse, Murphy's character must navigate and adapt to this horrifying new reality. The film became a global sensation, reigniting a passion for zombie films and paving the way for modern horror classics like "The Walking Dead," "REC," and "Shaun of the Dead."
Fast forward more than two decades, and director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have reunited, returning to the franchise that has remained largely dormant since the release of the cult 2007 sequel "28 Weeks Later." Notably, Boyle and Garland were not directly involved with that sequel, as they were busy collaborating on the sci-fi horror film "Sunshine" at the time. Now, these two powerhouse artists have come together once more to explore a world not only overrun by zombies but also where a resilient survivalist society has risen from the ruins. However, the zombies have evolved to become more cunning than ever. First, it was days ... then weeks. And now, it's been years -- 28, to be exact. Feast your eyes on the first official trailer for the long-awaited horror sequel "28 Years Later."
The upcoming horror thriller features a talented ensemble cast led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connell, and Ralph Fiennes. Set 28 years after the original film, the story follows a group of new survivors who have built a community on a heavily fortified island. However, they soon discover that no amount of preparation can shield them from relentless herds of infected, turning their lives into a living nightmare.
Said to be shot entirely on an iPhone (a nod to the groundbreaking approach of the original film), "28 Years Later" is produced by Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and franchise producer Andrew Macdonald. Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy, the original star of the first film, serves as an executive producer and is rumored to reprise his role as Jim. However, the condition of his character remains a mystery -- he could be a zombie, for all we know.
Fans of the franchise should mark their calendars as "28 Years Later" is set to open in theaters on June 20, 2025. Watch the trailer above.
