"Ballerina" Final Trailer: Ana de Armas Steps into the Deadly World of John Wick in This New Action-Packed Revenge Thriller
De Armas steps into the assassin’s shoes as Eve Macarro, a revenge-driven ballerina on a mission, with John Wick himself making an appearance in this thrilling spinoff.
The John Wick film series might be one franchise that has successfully tapped into the first-person shooter video game craze without being based on any particular property. There have been many times in the John Wick franchise where action and fight scenes seemed to be ripped straight out of a video game, including strategy, logistics, abilities, and even weaponry. It probably makes more sense for John Wick to continue in the world of video games than to see another spin-off installment.
But then again, if the success of these films has always been rooted in the highly elaborate stunt designs, mind-blowing fight choreography, and jaw-dropping action set pieces, then any character could lead the franchise, as long as they’re capable of doing what Keanu Reeves has brought to the table. Which is no small feat, as Keanu has always been an actor with an incredible amount of dedication, mixed with energetic charisma and an unwavering commitment to performing his own stunts.
So in that sense, Ana de Armas has some very big shoes to fill. But from the looks of this new final trailer for the upcoming John Wick spinoff film Ballerina, the Cuba-born beauty is more than ready to step into them, as she’s as skilled with handling and reloading automatic weapons on the fly as she is with picking up an ice pick and using it to kill by plunging it into someone’s chest multiple times. She’s a woman on fire!
In the upcoming action film, De Armas stars as Eve Macarro, a “ballerina” assassin from the Russian mafia who’s out to eliminate the people responsible for slaughtering her family. The only problem is, she’s picking a fight with some very powerful people, putting her on a collision course with equally skilled killers sent to stop her at all costs.
And among them is the man himself, John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves. Remember, this film takes place in between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, so Wick might still be working off his debt with the Ruska Roma while still on the run from the High Table.
Like Wick, Eve is on a revenge quest fueled by rage and loss. And like Wick, she’s skilled in the art of combat with great precision and brutal proficiency. She can handle her own, that’s for sure. But will it be enough for the average John Wick fan to be swayed into buying a ticket this summer to see it on the big screen? Well, have a look at this new trailer, as it might just convince you that this spinoff is more than worth the ride, despite its convoluted title: From the World of John Wick: Ballerina.
Ballerina is directed by Len Wiseman, the director behind the hit horror-action thrillers Underworld and Underworld: Evolution. Wiseman is also known for directing the fourth Die Hard installment, Live Free or Die Hard, as well as the Total Recall remake misfire. For the last few years, Wiseman has been working in television, helming episodes of such comic book-based shows as The Gifted, Swamp Thing, and Lucifer.
Joining Ana de Armas in the cast are Anjelica Huston, who is back as the Russian ringleader, "The Director," franchise staple Ian McShane as Winston, and the late Lance Reddick, in his final role, as Charon.
Gabriel Byrne costars as the film’s main villain, the Chancellor, while Norman Reedus takes on the role of a mysterious assassin who might be more than he seems.
With the future of the John Wick franchise riding on the success of its spinoffs and expansions, all eyes are on Ballerina to see if it can capture the same level of excitement that has made the original series such a cultural phenomenon. Fans will have their chance to see if this new chapter can live up to the legacy when it arrives in theaters on June 6th.
