"Andor: Season 2" Behind-the-Scenes 'Special Look' Featurette Teases the Birth of the Rebel Alliance!
Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor unites the rebellion in the final season of Andor.
The more we see new footage from Andor: Season 2, its final season, the more we’re hoping they can land this thing in a way that leaves everyone satisfied. Obviously, that's wishful thinking, but we can't help but be excited for this show’s return, even as many have fallen out of favor with just about everything Star Wars these days.
Andor has been a bright light in what has often felt like a dark, gloomy vacuum of disappointments in the Star Wars universe. Yes, okay, there are fans of the recent Star Wars releases like Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew. But let’s be honest—The Book of Boba Fett was a universal disaster. Obi-Wan Kenobi didn’t live up to its potential, and the later seasons of The Mandalorian have been less than stellar.
One could argue that Andor was the one Star Wars show that stood on its own ground, operating in a way that feels like its own world entirely. It's also a show, a prequel to Rogue One, that is closely connected to the original trilogy, which just might be why we have such a strong affinity for it.
But beyond the nostalgia, Andor feels more relevant than other new Star Wars shows and movies right now. It's about the launch of a rebellion, a push to sway the masses to take action against the elite and the aristocratic ruling class. And no matter where you stand politically, just about everyone can resonate with that helpless feeling when you go up against a governing power that doesn't have your best interest at heart—a system that feels completely immovable no matter how hard you push. In a way, Andor taps into that anxiety... and seething anger.
In this new behind-the-scenes “special look” featurette for Andor: Season 2, series creator Tony Gilroy shares something that caught our attention: “Revolutionary movements are spontaneously happening all over the Galaxy. How those come together is the stuff of our story.”
This seems to suggest that thief-turned-rebel leader Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) will be working to unite the many factions of the rebellion into one powerful alliance—a Rebel Alliance, if you will.
So, what does that entail? Obviously, it would require a degree of diplomacy, a grassroots base of support, and perhaps some compromising in order to create a united vision for action and direction. And of course, a robust rebel army would be nice too.
“If Season One laid the track, then Season Two is the juggernaut,” declares actress Genevieve O'Reilly, who returns as Senator Mon Mothma, a career Imperial politician who has secretly been helping fund the rebellion movement.
O'Reilly is touching on the epic scope of this new Season 2. It will consist of 12 episodes but will span over the course of the next four years, leading into the events of Rogue One.
The mere fact that this new season—and this show, for that matter—spans so many years gets us excited, especially when we’ve often criticized legacy sequels and prequels for their lack of scope and ambition. How many times have we seen stories in these types of universes where all the action takes place in a week, or even a single day? It’s not because studios don’t have the resources to create fresh, exciting visions of these universes, but because they often lack the will to do so.
Andor has proven that there’s a bigger, more expansive way to tell these stories, and we’re all for it. And we know there are naysayers out there who’ve been complaining about the show’s budget—and we’re not going to lie, it’s obscenely high to the point of grotesquery and outrageousness.
But we ain't damn accountants. We live in an era now where studios can shelve fully funded and completed feature films and dispose of them as tax write-offs, so the argument that budgets are too high in Hollywood is kinda moot. That said, if it were put to a vote, we’d be the first to cast our ballot to bring back the days of more reasonably budgeted entertainment. But we digress.
So, with the stakes higher than ever and the rebellion taking shape, Season 2 of Andor might just be the galactic payoff we’ve all been waiting for! It will start streaming on Disney+ on Tuesday, April 22nd. Watch the new featurette, above.
