"A Nice Indian Boy" Trailer: Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff Find Love in This New Culture-Clashing Rom-Com
Deadpool's Karan Soni takes the lead in this heartfelt, My Big Fat Greek Wedding-style comedy about family, tradition, and choosing love.
You might've first taken notice of comic actor Karan Soni when he appeared in the indie smash Safety Not Guaranteed. But for most of you, it was probably his performance as the lovable, nerdy taxi driver “Dopinder” in the Deadpool films where you stood up and said to yourself, “Hey, I like this guy! He’s a cool dude.”
While the Indian-American actor has popped up in a variety of projects over the years, this might be his biggest role to date—he’s the lead! And he gets to fall in love with Jonathan Groff in the new romantic comedy A Nice Indian Boy.
Just in case you're wondering—yes, Karan Soni is the “nice Indian boy” in question.
Much in the vein of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but with a same-sex romance twist, Soni plays Naveen, a mild-mannered physician who has been mostly unlucky in love—until he meets Jay (Groff), a friendly-faced photographer who asks him out on a simple movie date. That one date turns into something real, something meaningful… and something serious.
But there's a catch: Naveen, being private about his love life, hasn’t told his traditional Indian parents that he’s been dating someone for months. And to be clear—it’s not that they would disapprove of him dating a man. Don’t be silly! It’s more about him dating outside his own culture. Phew! Glad we cleared that up.
Now, Naveen finds himself at a crossroads: does he break things off to keep the peace, or does he finally commit to Jay and tell his parents he’s not only in love but ready to marry the man of his dreams? —Despite the whole non-Indian thing.
A Nice Indian Boy is a heartfelt new rom-com from filmmaker Roshan Sethi, who previously collaborated with Karan Soni on the 2021 COVID-themed indie comedy 7 Days.
Sethi is also the co-creator of the FOX medical series The Resident, which ran for six seasons. Sethi is also known for co-writing the screenplay for the legalizing-abortion historical drama Call Jane. However, he didn’t write A Nice Indian Boy—those credits go to screenwriters Eric Randall (Elsbeth) and Madhuri Shekar (The Nevers), based on Shekar’s own stage play of the same name.
In addition to Soni and Groff, the film also features Sunita Mani (GLOW) as Naveen’s sister, with Harish Patel (Eternals) and stand-up comedienne Zarna Garg playing their parents. Rounding out the cast are Peter S. Kim and Sas Goldberg.
Mindy Kaling serves as an executive producer, while Justin Baldoni (yes, that Justin Baldoni) is credited as a producer.
So, if you're looking for a throwback, feel-good rom-com where culture clashes as fast as sparks fly, this might just be the perfect pick for you.
A Nice Indian Boy hits theaters on April 4 in the U.S. and Canada —Because sometimes love finds a way, even when you’re not looking for it!
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
First comes love. Then comes chaos.
When Naveen (Karan Soni), a soft spoken doctor, finally brings his charming white-artist boyfriend Jay (Jonathan Groff) home to meet his traditional Indian family, misunderstandings and emotional revelations put everyone on edge. Despite facing uncomfortable truths about their own ideas of love and marriage, the family attempts to plan the big Indian wedding of Naveen and Jay’s dreams.
