The holiday season does seem to start earlier and earlier each year. It’s literally the Monday after Halloween, yet you wouldn’t know it from the trickle of new holiday movies coming out over the next couple of weeks. You would think the entire month of November would be dedicated to Thanksgiving, but apparently, Christmas just can’t wait its turn.

In any case, this week’s new releases not only give us a glimpse of what November has in store for us in terms of movies and TV shows, but also suggest that Hollywood will be packing this month and the next with a wide variety of entertainment to keep us occupied through the end of the year.

So, for anyone who believes there’s simply nothing to watch, well, just check out this week’s lineup. It’s pretty much a microcosm of what the rest of the year will look like: a sprinkling of awards contenders, a big dollop of studio-backed blockbusters, genre films of all kinds, including foreign and independent productions, and, of course, enough holiday-themed entertainment to remind us that Christmas is already right around the corner. Spooky season comes to a close this week. Pour one out for all those horror fans who have been planning their house decorations and costumes for months, as this weekend will mark the culmination of all that hard work. And because Halloween happens to fall on Saturday this year, Hollywood has decided to take it easier, holding back any big movie releases until next month.

Also, on the TV side, there are only a few new releases to pick from, as the fall season is already well underway. But that’s not to say this week is lacking any promising watches, as most of us will be at home this Saturday guarding that candy bowl and maybe flipping on the TV for a good scare.

An experimental treatment restores his face but leaves him with a disturbing new ability to mold and reshape his appearance much like clay. Co-starring Naomi Ackie and Max Minghella, the film sees Matt fighting to control his terrifying abilities as he slowly loses his grip on who he once was.

Directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson and featuring makeup effects by Weta Workshop, this wonderfully bizarre fairy tale takes a wickedly funny look at the lengths one woman will go to find her happily ever after.

Helen Mirren unleashes her wickedly mean side as famed crime novelist Patricia Highsmith in this twisty psychological thriller. Twenty years ago, Sofia Coppola’s unconventional Marie Antoinette biopic divided critics and struggled at the box office. Today, it’s a cult favorite, perhaps even one of the director’s best works. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, and an ensemble cast, the 2006 historical drama pairs lavish 18th-century costumes with ’70s and ’80s new wave and punk rock music. What once seemed like an odd choice has become part of its charm. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, MUBI is bringing the film back to theaters in a new 4K restoration. Time to rediscover a film that may have been ahead of its time.

Directed by Brian Duffield and co-starring Josh Brolin as the diver’s late father, whose survival lessons might be his only hope of escaping, this bizarre race against time could be one of the fall’s biggest surprises... and quite possibly the only movie this year about a guy getting gobbled up by a whale.

Another decade... another Jane Austen adaptation. Daisy Edgar-Jones takes on the challenge of playing Elinor Dashwood in this new version of the Austen classic. You know, that old chestnut about two sisters navigating love, heartbreak, and British society, where finding suitable husbands is practically essential to securing their future. Classic Austen! Joining Edgar-Jones are Esmé Creed-Miles as her younger sister Marianne, George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, and Caitríona Balfe as Mrs. Dashwood. Come for Austen, but stay for that wonderfully British tradition of keeping your feelings bottled up until it’s almost too late.

Before he knows it, he’s facing a high-profile drug-conspiracy trial, with his career, reputation, and even his freedom on the line. Maddie Phillips and Tanaya Beatty co-star in writer-director Alex Goyette’s feature debut, where the pursuit of science takes a rather perverted turn.

It’s a fascinating piece of history, told by the very people who lived it.

October is here and fully in swing. And so comes the start of a new fall TV season. Not surprisingly, this week is packed with new series debuts, along with plenty of familiar favorites returning for another season. But if you’re looking for a new film to watch this week, well, you’ll have quite a range to pick from. Coming to theaters is a whole variety of films looking to grab your attention, some appropriately timed for the Halloween season. But that doesn’t mean you need to drive to your local movie theater, as a few streaming originals are competing for your eyeballs, not to mention a few summer blockbusters coming to VOD for the first time.

Sebastian Stan may quietly be building one of the most interesting post-MCU careers around. His latest challenge comes in Cristian Mungiu’s thought-provoking Palme d’Or-winner, playing Mihai, a Romanian father living in Norway with his wife, Lisbet (Renate Reinsve). When their child arrives at school with bruises, accusations of abuse lead authorities to remove the children from their home. Mihai suddenly finds himself fighting a system questioning his parenting, religious beliefs, and way of life. Talk of another Oscar nomination for Stan is already beginning to build.

October is almost here, which means the release calendar is about to start filling up with plenty of horror, supernatural, and generally spooky movies and shows. And this week is already showing signs of getting into the Halloween spirit a little early.

At the same time, with the summer movie season officially behind us, fall usually brings a shift toward more dramatic and seriously minded titles as studios begin rolling out their end-of-year slates. Israeli investigative journalists Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor examine the increasingly blurred line between artificial intelligence and modern warfare in this documentary about the Israeli military’s use of AI and automated surveillance in targeting systems during the Gaza war. Produced by The Guardian and JW Films, its title comes from Nezek Agavi, the Hebrew military term for “collateral damage.” The film recently won the Special Jury Prize at Venice and has already stirred political controversy in Israel.

🎥 Begotten: 4K Restoration

Some movies are strange. Then there’s E. Elias Merhige’s grainy black-and-white, mostly dialogue-free experimental horror film, which has spent the last few decades circulating among horror fans like some forbidden artifact. Long before creepypasta had a name, Merhige created something that felt like it had been discovered rather than filmed. Now this underground oddity is getting a 4K restoration to remind everyone just how deeply unsettling it still is.

🎥 Spirited Away: Live on Stage

Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning anime fantasy gets a remarkable second life onstage in this filmed production directed by Tony Award winner John Caird. Kiana Madeira, Jessica Rothe, and Logan Marshall-Green star as medical workers whose rescue mission deep in the Amazon goes sideways when they awaken a colossal ancient snake predator known by locals as the Boiúna. Directed by genre helmer Mike P. Nelson (The Domestics), this jungle horror reminds us that giant snakes aren’t just terrifying... they also make one hell of a movie monster.

The warning is pretty simple: be careful what you believe online, because there’s a good chance it was manufactured to make you believe it.

What scares the worst of the worst? Try being a hardened criminal trapped inside a high-security prison where inmates are being brutally murdered by something they can’t even see. From filmmaker Joko Anwar and starring Abimana Aryasatya, Almanzo Konoralma, and Aming Sugandhi, this blood-soaked Indonesian supernatural thriller pits violent prisoners against an invisible killer they can’t intimidate or fight. Turns out being locked up with something they can’t see is a whole different level of prison hell.

Why would anyone willingly risk their life just to stand on top of a mountain? Director Amir Bar-Lev (The Tillman Story) tries to answer that question by following a group of professional climbers attempting to conquer K2 during its most unforgiving season. The conditions are brutal, and one wrong step could be their last. This doc captures that uniquely human desire to keep pushing beyond our limits. Why climb K2 in winter? Maybe the answer really is as simple as: because it’s there.

Everyone wants the freedom to shape their own life. Korean American filmmaker Liz Sargent turns that simple idea into something deeply personal, casting her sister Anna Sargent in this semi-biographical drama about disability and independence. When a crisis disrupts Anna’s support system, she’s forced to navigate the bureaucracy surrounding housing and caregiving while fighting to maintain control over her own future.

🎥 Pulp: What Do You Do for an Encore?

English rocker Jarvis Cocker and the band Pulp look back on four decades of music, breakups, reunions, and the long road to their biggest arena show yet. Director Garth Jennings mixes that history with a colorful concert film that drops audiences right into the crowd. More than a trip down memory lane, it captures the joy of a band getting another chance to turn up the volume.

🎥 Avengers: Endgame: Encore

You still remember the moments, the lines, and that cheer when Captain America finally said, “Avengers... assemble.” Now Marvel is bringing that finale epic back to theaters for a special Encore presentation, reportedly with four minutes of new footage tied to Avengers: Doomsday. 🎥 Ghost in the Shell: 30th Anniversary

Major Motoko Kusanagi and Section 9 are hunting the Puppet Master, a mysterious intelligence that can hack human minds and rewrite identity. Mamoru Oshii’s landmark 1995 anime, adapted from Masamune Shirow’s classic manga, mixes cyberpunk action with noir atmosphere and questions about what makes someone human. Three decades later, its ideas about artificial intelligence, manufactured bodies, surveillance, and digital identity feel less like distant science fiction and more like the world catching up to the movie.

One of the great voices of American indie cinema, Charles Burnett has spent decades making films that never quite got the attention they deserved. Now his 1983 cult classic is getting a new 4K restoration and another shot at finding its audience. Starring Everett Silas, Jessie Holmes, and Gaye Shannon-Burnett, the film follows an aimless young Black man caught between family obligations, neighborhood loyalty, and a future he still hasn’t figured out.

September always feels like the perfect transitional month, as we slowly move out of the summer season and into the fall slate. Somewhere in that shift, you usually get a little bit of everything. There are bound to be a few leftovers hanging around, but expect a few surprises along the way, too.

This week brings a long-awaited sequel to give Spider-Man his biggest challenge yet, along with a handful of mid-budget flicks to choose from. On the TV side, there’s a scattering of new releases as well.

Directed by The Wailing filmmaker Na Hong-jin, this Korean sci-fi action thriller follows a police chief (Hwang Jung-min) as strange local incidents point to something far more disturbing than a wild animal in the woods. Jo In-sung and Jung Ho-yeon, along with Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Cameron Britton, and Taylor Russell, also star. This is close encounters of the wrong kind.

🎥 The Uprising

Filmmaker Paul Greengrass trades modern thrillers for 14th-century England in this sweeping medieval epic about the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt. Andrew Garfield stars as Wat Tyler, an impoverished man pushed by crushing taxes and royal oppression into leading a rebellion against King Richard II (Woody Norman). With Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Cosmo Jarvis, and Katherine Waterston also aboard, this looks like history told from the mud up, where the tired, the fed up, and the angry finally get heard.

🎥 The Passion of the Christ

More than 20 years after its theatrical release, Mel Gibson’s biblical epic returns to theaters in a newly remastered 4K presentation. Starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus, the film became a box-office phenomenon and one of the highest-grossing independently distributed films in U.S. history. The re-release will also include a first look at Gibson’s upcoming two-part sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One, due in 2027.

When it comes to zombies, most of us know the genre, but not necessarily the history behind it. In this new documentary, filmmaker Maya Annik Bedward traces the zombie’s roots to colonial Haiti, where it began as a symbol of enslavement and a person stripped of freedom and will. Hollywood eventually transformed that idea into the flesh-eating monster we know today. Now it’s time to look back at where it all started.

In a child’s eyes, parents can feel larger than life, sometimes almost godlike. In this inner-city L.A. drama from writer-director Walter Thompson-Hernández, Danielle Brooks and J. Alphonse Nicholson play the parents of a twelve-year-old boy (Bodhi Dell) who idolizes his recently returned father. But life in Watts soon chips away at that myth. Based on the director’s short film, it explores childhood imagination, family struggles, and growing up when a child’s reality refuses to stay small.

One of cinema’s great gifts is how it can carry us somewhere unfamiliar and make that world feel less foreign. This Bolivian drama travels high into the Andes to follow Clara, a teenage girl caught between ancestral customs and dreams beyond her mountain homeland. Written and directed by Álvaro Olmos Torrico and starring Marisol Vallejo Montaño, the film looks at a Quechua community where heritage, tradition, and ambition pull in different directions.

Tom Stern’s documentary follows the San Antonio art-punk legends from their 1980s underground beginnings through cult fame and mainstream recognition with the ’90s hit “Pepper.” Using archival footage, interviews, animation, and surreal reenactments, the film captures the reckless creativity of a band that pushed artistic boundaries and influenced generations.

Legendary French animator René Laloux’s (Fantastic Planet) final feature follows Sylvain, a young warrior investigating an army of automata turning Gandahar’s people to stone. It’s the middle of August, and you’d think by now the movie and TV slate would be starting to wind down. But nope. There’s still quite a bit left on the calendar, with a surprisingly wide variety of things to choose from.

And while some of the summer’s biggest movies are still making waves at the box office… for instance, the latest Spider-Man movie seems unstoppable at the moment, while Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is still drawing huge box office numbers, there are plenty of new releases coming in this weekend hoping to make a dent of their own, and maybe even take the top spot.

I Saw the TV Glow writer-director Jane Schoenbrun is back with another neon-soaked meta-horror head-scratcher destined for cult status. Hacks’ Hannah Einbinder stars as a rising young horror filmmaker hired to revive the cult Camp Miasma slasher franchise by bringing its original final girl, played by Gillian Anderson, back for one last encore. But this is no routine reboot, as things mutate into something far stranger... and far more psychosexual as the two women become entangled in obsession, attraction, and shared trauma.

Luis Valdez gets the spotlight in this cultural portrait from writer-director David Alvarado, tracing the Mexican-American playwright and filmmaker’s path from the farm fields of Delano to Broadway and Hollywood. Narrated by Edward James Olmos, who starred in Valdez’s landmark Zoot Suit and its 1981 film adaptation, the documentary revisits the founding of El Teatro Campesino, the breakthrough of Zoot Suit, and the making of La Bamba. It’s a story about art as a weapon, theater as a movement, and the Chicano voice that helped reshape the American stage.

🎥 Moana
(Fri, July 10th — wide release)

The ocean is calling again, and Motunui is making the jump to live action. Newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia stars as Moana, the young wayfinder whose first voyage beyond the reef sets her on a path toward Maui, with Dwayne Johnson returning as the unruly demigod. Directed by Hamilton’s Thomas Kail, this island adventure brings ancestral navigation, sweeping musical scale, and one giant coconut crab back to the big screen. This time in human form.

🎥 Evil Dead Burn
(Fri, July 10th — wide release)

Death may be permanent, but in this franchise, it’s never quiet. A grieving widow retreats to her late husband’s secluded family home with her in-laws, only to find comfort replaced by Deadite possession, family trauma, and a whole lot of spilled blood. Led by Swiss actress Souheila Yacoub and directed by French horror filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček (Infested), this new chapter drags mourning straight into demonic survival mode. Mourning the dead is hard enough... surviving them is a much bloodier problem.

🎥 Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass

Zoey Deutch stars as Gail, a small-town hairdresser whose engagement implodes after her fiancé uses his celebrity hall pass to “cheat” on her, sending her to Los Angeles to even the score with her own celebrity crush: Mad Men’s Jon Hamm. Directed by David Wain and co-starring John Slattery and Hamm as themselves, this oddball comedy turns heartbreak into one very ill-advised hunt through the shallow end of Hollywood. Perhaps, some celebrity crushes are better left hypothetical than actually pursued.

The frontier gets a bit colder when gold enters the picture. Mackenzie Foy stars as a lone caretaker at an isolated Civil War-era Union outpost whose quiet survival routine explodes after stolen treasure lands in her hands. When outlaws led by Sean Bean secretly targets her, endurance becomes her only weapon. Co-starring Odeya Rush, Jack Kesy, and Joe Pantoliano, this Western thriller turns winter, greed, and isolation into a brutal standoff.

With 400,000 enemy troops closing in, the Red Army is forced into a dangerous river escape. Liu Ye stars as an aging soldier bound by a sacred vow, whose path crosses with a homeless orphan caught in the retreat. Directed by Xu Zhanxiong, this historical epic finds survival, sacrifice, and duty on the same battlefield.

Some films become family albums, and some become unfinished conversations. Documentarian Ross McElwee turns forty years of personal filmmaking into a reflective documentary about his son Adrian, who grew up inside his father’s work, became a filmmaker himself, and later died from a fentanyl overdose. Revisiting Adrian’s final footage alongside the stalled fictional adaptation of Sherman’s March, McElwee shapes a tender meditation on grief, memory, and how a father learns to live with what remains.

Cemre Paksoy stars as Eleni, a new caregiver at an upscale retirement community who finds herself drawn into a disturbing chain of scam calls aimed at elderly residents. Written, produced, and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Georgia Bernstein, this sexually charged thriller follows Eleni as her connection with the elusive Douglas twists care and concern into something more dangerous.

🎥 Mockbuster

Low budgets, massive headaches, and no time to blink. Just another day at the studio behind Sharknado. Filmmaker Anthony Frith directs and stars in this behind-the-scenes comedy documentary about his attempt at making a dinosaur-laden mockbuster for The Asylum, the notorious B-movie company that has built an entire cottage industry of blockbuster knockoffs. With only six days to shoot, shrinking resources, and production problems piling up, the real monster may be the schedule itself.

🎥 Rhythm is a Dancer

Writer-director-star Lauren Caster leads this heartfelt indie dramedy as Ro, a struggling dancer and actor who heads home and meets her biological father (Tate Donovan) for the first time. Inspired by Caster’s own life, the film turns one unconventional family story into an emotional look at reconnection, self-discovery, and the messy ways family can find a way to become whole.

🎥 The Floaters

Saving summer camp was never supposed to be part of the plan. GLOW’s Jackie Tohn stars as a struggling musician who takes a last-resort job from her overachieving best friend, helping wrangle a group of misfit campers at the Jewish summer camp where they both grew up. But with the camp’s future at stake and an old rival across the field, getting everyone to care may be the real uphill battle.

🎥 Black Chariot: Restoration
(Fri, July 10th — limited release, in select theaters)

Robert L. Goodwin’s 1971 independent drama returns in a 4K restoration, bringing blaxploitation icon Bernie Casey’s lead acting debut back to theaters after decades of limited visibility. Casey plays a drifter pulled into social awakening, underground resistance, and fractured American memory. Restored by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture, this revival gives a nearly forgotten film its road back into view.

🎥 Backrooms: Everything Must Go

The backrooms are opening up again, this time with more footage, more lore, and more strange corners to get lost in. Directed by wunderkind Kane Parsons and based on the viral IP, this extended cut of A24’s horror smash hit adds 16 minutes of brand-new material. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell star in one of the biggest hits of the year so far, turning internet-born unease into a full theatrical descent. Everything must go, apparently, including any hope of finding the exit.

Before he became a national legend, George Washington was a young soldier facing brutal warfronts, personal trials, and impossible choices that would begin shaping the future of a country not yet born. William Franklyn-Miller stars in this historical drama about the pressure, sacrifice, and rebellious spirit behind the myth, with Mary-Louise Parker, Kelsey Grammer, Andy Serkis, and Ben Kingsley rounding out the cast. Just in time for America’s 250th anniversary, the Jon Erwin-directed epic tells the origin story of the man who would eventually become America’s first president.

As German warships close in on Oslo on April 9, 1940, Colonel Birger Eriksen commands the undermanned Oscarsborg Fortress and makes the impossible call to sink the Blücher. Directed by Daniel Fahre and led by Bjørn Sundquist, this Norwegian historical war thriller shifts between the Battle of Drøbak Sound and the 1946 inquiry that forces Eriksen to defend the decision that shaped an invasion.

🎥 Citizen Kane: 85th Anniversary

Some mysteries only grow larger with time. Orson Welles’ landmark classic returns to the big screen for its 85th anniversary. The film follows the mystery of Charles Foster Kane’s final word, “Rosebud,” tracing his rise from inherited wealth to newspaper power, political ambition, and personal ruin. This special anniversary release also includes exclusive insight from film critic Leonard Maltin.
